FYI, on any exhaust work I've stopped using pipe clamps which crush the parts together and switched over to 3" wide stainless band clamps available on Ebay which allow for easy replacement or reuse of individual parts or sections if needed. You can also reuse the band clamps for many years, just make note of its forward position. If you what a real air tight seal wrap the connection with aluminum tape before band clamp application. Additionally, I'll apply anti seize compound on the female and male pipe ends for easy disassembly. Cheers.

"You lucky bastard!" Love the film Snatch. The groovy tune that was playing had me thinking of that film and then you said that line. I had a good laugh. As you were taking the exhaust out as one piece had me wishing you'd say, "This has gone a bit Hubnut." But you did mention him a bit later. I had my exhaust done a few months ago at my local Volvo specialist and luckily they had a mixture of used and unused parts to replace the rusty and noisy bits. All replaced from the end of the exhaust manifold (except one small bit just before the rear axle) to the tip including the curly pipe. Previous owner installed an after-market glass pack that sounded bloody awful. I find it odd that the 200 series rear silencer always has four holes that form...
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
Seems you've definitely got good taste! 😃 Glad yours is sorted, I haven't had issues with the silencers before, each one including the 700/900 series has started blowing above the rear axle and just before the rear silencer shortly after buying them, being such long cars without much support in the centre can't help either!

I am currently changing the exhaust on my Volvo 240. The exhaust connector pipe that I have and that I am replacing actually goes under the axle which makes that part easier. Where I am stuck up now is getting the front silencer rubber o-ring hangers on. Cannot get them to stretch far enough to actually get them to go on where they are supposed to go.
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I would much prefer an under axle pipe. With the rubbers I found the easiest thing was to put them on the brackets attached to the car first, then jack the exhaust up and slip them over, some wd-40 helps too
@georgebutlers49452 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod Thanks for the quick response. I will try your suggestion as to the rubber hangers. If it was just a vertical issue it would be easier but I also have to move the exhaust side to side as this is where there is a greater distance between the chassis bracket and the muffler bracket. Once you get one on, that rubber needs to stretch quite a distance to get the other on but I will be working on it and let you know how it goes. I have changed the muffler system once before in the 90s when I had a previous 240 and it did not seem to be so difficult. I was younger then!
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
@@georgebutlers4945 😄 yeah I think I remember having to do them in a certain order, they are a total pain! Good luck with it, please let me know how you get on!
@georgebutlers49452 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod I got that part done! I hung the one that is on the inboard side first and then got a long woodworking clamp between the front muffler pipe and the chassis where the jack stand sits. Tightened it down until I had the two hanger parts close enough that I could slip the rubber onto the muffler hanger. For that I used a kind of hook tool that looks essentially like a hand hoe with the blade off and also has a dog leg. Don't know what it originally was for but found it lying around here when I bought this house. It was perfect for the job together with another hand tool that looks like a broad chisel but is way too dull for that. between those two instruments was able to get adequate grip and traction to pull the o-ring far enough to slip on without tearing it. Whew! This is a stainless steel system from IPD out west. (I'm in Maine). Next problem is that tightening the supplied exhaust pipe clamps that are fitted with a small 10mm tightener screw, even before you get the screws tightened enough so that the pipes don't wiggle the screw snaps. Off to get proper exhaust pipe clamps! The rest will be a cinch since I have both mufflers hung properly with pipes connected. Thanks for your help and videos which I enjoy immensely!

@GothKid19962 жыл бұрын
I know that when you go to remove the resonator from the catalytic converter you can usually get some WD-40 and tap it with a mallet until it starts to move a bit then get on the rear muffler and tailpipe and use it as a way to pull it off, on most 240’s I think 89 and before there where under axle pipes opposed to over axle pipes. In my opinion it’s much easier to remove a system with the under axle pipe configuration.
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
My '88 has over axle, so I had a look on Skandix and the only choice for under axle is on Turbo models, maybe EU spec cars were different 🤔
@travisfoltz5172 жыл бұрын
@@Involvod I am pretty sure all years of 240 exhaust parts (at least B230F) are the same. I have used both Volvo branded and Starla branded kits here in the US. Starla ones here always have under axle & Volvo kits always have over axle. With that said a number of years ago I remember someone mentioning that from Volvo you used to be able to choose what kit you could receive-over or under axle. My experience w/ both brands is that they have the same life span. The problem w/over axle is that here in the US there are gas tank shield panels on each side of a 240 & over axle pipes sometimes make contact so you have to cut a chunk of the panel out.
@Involvod2 жыл бұрын
@@travisfoltz517 thanks for the info man, i would definitely prefer an under axle on Lili and it's good to know it would work. To be honest though I am tempted to put something a little throatier on her, if I can get away with it here in Germany that is..

I bought the sport exhaust from IPD and me dad and I are having an issue where the exhaust hangs kinda low because there's no obvious place to attach the pipe where the front silencer used to be to the frame due to the distance (reaching the o ring) and not having something to pull it up. Any suggestions? We tried a bracket and a leather strap but it was too busy and didn't make a difference so we're thinking of mounting an s hook with an additional bolt to connect the middle exhaust behind the cat to the frame? Too many potholes make it slide a little and the rear muffler pun is hitting the frame making an awful ruckus.

Good job. The main thing is you gotter done. Don't be to hard on yourself, thats what other people are for. I don't like to waste any more time than necessary so I start from the back and cut the joints. Pipe cutter, plasma cutter, cutting torch, sawzall, hacksaw, whatever. I don't bother unclamping them. Whats the point if they are rotten? If I plan to reuse a pipe or silencer only then will it be unclamped. Starting from the rear offers the path of least resistance. SNATCH, a classic.
