Replacing Fuel Filter & Fuel Lines on a Volkswagen Jetta TDI (MK4)

Do I need OEM for the lines between hard plastic tank lines and the filter? I see they have a special L fitting on the end. The wall of the hose looks thinner on the L fitting side as if they want to force me to buy their special lines. Nevermind, figured it out: The hose isn't thinner, it's all the same. You can remove the hose from the L fittings. They have special low profile spring clamps which are proably meant for a special tool. You could use a hacksaw. I managed to get them off with PEX clamp pliers. The tubing was adhered to the barb from being on there for 20 years. I carfully used a screw driver, pick and pocket knife to pry and cut the tubing off. Luckily with a long and patient process I only did a minor bit of marring on the plastic barb fittings leaving at least two of the barbs fully intact.

@@knightdevil777 they are hellerman Tyton zip ties. I keep a variety of them around. The dual cuff style as well as the push pin style I used. You can also find them on Amazon for cheaper as well.

Im replacing just the return lines, ive read a few people say you dont need to prime them. Is that true? Im afraid of getting air in the system lol

That’s true. They shouldn’t have any pressure on them which is why they are just hoses. You only need to bleed on the feed side/high pressure side.

What size hose did you use?

8mm or 5/16 for the filter to pump and also 3mm for return lines. I got it on ID PARTS. Except for the clear line which I found on Amazon.

You could just use all black hose if you want. I only added the little clear hose for my preference for seeing air bubbles. You will need some barb fittings though if you add the clear section unless you run it all the way with the clear. I can’t find the exact one I got but this is same thing. Try this link. What about the other 2 lines that go to the filter? Do you know what size they are? Mine are dry rotted on the those lines as well. Thanks.

I don’t off the top of my head. But those go to a quick connectors coming from the fuel tank. You can buy those pre formed hoses with the quick connector on ID PARTS I believe!

i have a BEW can i do this right off the fuel filter return line ? i changed fuel filter it ran shut off and now wont run can i prime it from the filter ?

I believe the BEWs have a electric lift pump in the tank. I would verify it’s working because it should self prime with the pump working.
