Mike thank you for the videos. Not only are you a great mechanic, you're a great teacher also. You're well organized, well prepared, and have obviously put a lot of planning into these videos. I appreciate your efforts and hard work. Just acquired an ealrl 41 servi, almost all there. It has compression so it won't be long. Unfortunately the Harley shops are closed 😞. Can I get some more info on the slide hammer seal puller? Home brew?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
It's a Snap-On slide hammer. One of the attachments that came with it, is a long tool, screw, that threads into a coupling, that threads onto the slide hammer shaft. That tool (screw) is what I screw into a hole I drill in the seal. Have fun with that Servicar. You can get anything for it on line.

Mike, I have a stubborn clutch hub and will use a puller, question, do you leave the push rod in when using the puller, also looks like it was assembled without the hub nut lock washer, and shouldn't you be able to see the key on shaft or is that after the hub is off. By the way, you're a genius
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
Quite a compliment, but just a guy who's been at this a long time. You can't generally see that key when it's in place. Different people have produced that clutch hub puller. And, I'm sure people have used universal type pullers. But, my favorite four speed clutch hub puller (I'm assuming that's what we're talking about), goes on to three fingers of the hub. The center bolt of the puller has a socket with a hole in it that the pushrod slides into and does not bottom. I had another one that the center bolt went into the hole in the mainshaft. This one had to have the pushrod removed before attacking the hub. The later clutch hubs were very different.

Excellent vid! Question: the motor pulley nut, is that left hand thread? Mine is stuck like a motha
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
It is a right hand thread. Left hand threads are on the transmission mainshaft. On that motor nut, the factory says one drop of red loctite. People get carried away and create a real fight to remove it.

Mike, I just bought a '51 Panhead and will be doing this--thanks. However, the speedo is not hooked up. Could you do a video on replacing the speedo cable and drive unit, or at least clue me in on where the speedo cable drive is? I don't see a drive on the front fork, and my Clymers manual doesn't say one word about the speedo cable. I would sure appreciate the help!
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
It's on the trans, left side, about halfway down. Look behind the inner primary. In trans case, slides in, left front of case. Cable slides into the end and cap screws on.

Replaced transmission main seal, main drive gear seal and spacer, but for some reason it leaks oil between the spacer and the sprocket shaft on 1978 Super Glide. Any thoughts? Great videos!!
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
I think you mean "between the main drive gear and the spacer." Fill it up with "high temp silicone." It will fill the space between the splines and the spacer and sprocket. Then, install the sprocket. Don't remove the spacer or seal, just fill up the outside spaces in that main drive gear. If everything is in good shape, that should do it, unless the main drive gear and/or the main drive gear bearing is worn out. Also, don't overfill the transmission with oil. And, for the "long front end" people, too much lean when the bike is on its sidestand, can make it leak.
@marcmcdermott98783 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right between the main drive gear and the spacer thank you for the info and the great videos
@danoweston61854 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! Is the clutch hub nut a left hand thread? And the pulley?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
The clutch hub nut and the trans sprocket nut are left hand thread. The motor pulley nut is right hand thread. And, you're quite welcome.

Love your videos! Very informative and easy to follow. Keep it up. My question is I have a 76 flh I’m restoring. I’ve got a very slow drip( 2-3 a week from the bottom of the trany) dripping off the mounting bolt. Where do you think I should look? I installed a new seal so I don’t think it could be coming from main shaft. Is there a gasket or seal on the bottom of the trany? The books don’t compare to your videos. Keep it coming, espically the old shovels👍 Thanks Steve
@pacificmike95015 жыл бұрын
Possibly, it is leaking from the kicker cover/throwout cover, or even from one or more of the trans case mounting studs. Harley used to produce oversize mounting studs to repair this. Probably, aftermarket studs are available, or helicoil inserts with sealant.
@stevewright2625 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I never knew this. It’s dripping of a stud bolt so that explains it. Thanks again and keepem coming
@alanhillstrom72252 жыл бұрын
The 5 th mounting bolt is often replaced with a bolt that is too long . It breaks the case causing a drip . I have also had the case cracked above 1 or more of the other 4 mounting studs causing a drip.

Some do, some don't. An impact turns a much shorter radius than a big lever. Just my opinion.

I have a 58 duo glide and I need to replace this seal!! Great series of videos! Love the channel! Is there any specific oil I should be using or avoiding in my 58 4 speed?
@pacificmike95014 жыл бұрын
They used to recommend the same oil as you put in your engine. Lubricants are much better today. I usually use a good brand of 85-140 translube.
@DeeInTheHouse5 жыл бұрын
What does your outer primary cover look like ? Did you put in some venting it for the belt?
@pacificmike95015 жыл бұрын
It looks like an old, well used cover. It's been there a long time. The belt has no problems at all. It's been on for over twenty years, with no venting, other than the air that naturally gets in there.
@DeeInTheHouse5 жыл бұрын
@@pacificmike9501 Thanks Mike, good to know, I bought a Pan with a open 3" belt but many have told me that it's not recommended for the early taper shaft motors so, I plan on switching to narrower 1.5 belt but heard tons of discussions about venting and giving it air not to less the belts life...thx
