Just did the front on my ‘07 FXLR and not looking forward to the rear one. It has been a long time and I know it’s gonna make my old arthritic wrists holler.🤣 Thanks for the refresher Man.

Great video ❤ one thing I’m mindful of now after changing my mounts on my dyna is keeping oil off the front mount when swapping out the oil filter. The old oil and rubber on the mount don’t like each other so I purchased one of Harleys plastic drip tray things that slides under the old filter to keep oil off the mount when doing oil changes. 😊
@GilstrapGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yessir! I still make a mess with that drip tray, but always make sure to clean the mounts really well if I do spill
@martincvitkovich724 Жыл бұрын
I bought one of those too. Used it about 5 times trying to use it correctly, all 5 times it just made a big mess on the mount. Didn't find a way not to make a mess. it sucked
@garryhorton9105 Жыл бұрын
Ok it’s fiddly to get into place but pushed right back it should be ok. I made a mess using it once but got it right in the end👍🏻

I do a whole arts and crafts project with saran wrap to cover the mount and a makeshift "tray/funnel" custom shaped out of aluminum foil. Cheap, works quick, and you can just toss it all when you're done.

Nice maintenance job .. I agree on the OEM or equivalent
@JohnSmith-de2mz10 ай бұрын
I agree on the subject of OEM vs after market mounts, I bought some all stainless steel mounts that the rubber part was replaced with stainless mesh, sounded good, no rubber to break down from oil dirt and vibration. They were much more expensive. Well the stainless mesh squished down and became uneffective after the same amount of time as a stock mount wears down

I did these mounts in my 87 Electra glide classic. The original owner never changed them out. It took hours to remove that crossbar behind the transmission without tearing anything up, and I agree with the Mr. David Ross the front cover is horrible.

What about swing arm bushings? Do the dynas have them or is everything just hooked up to the trans? I have massive death wobble and have to do my motor mounts but wasn't sure about the swing arm.

I hate when people ask me “why didn’t you do this?” Or “why didn’t you do that?” I say because it’s my bike not yours. That’s two of the most stupid questions ever.

Have you ever experienced a engine hitting noise from the rear motor mount area? But the motor mounts are intact
@GilstrapGarage Жыл бұрын
I have head of that when a friend replaced his rear mount with a big bear choppers mount. It was contacting the transmission. I’ve never experienced it myself though. Another place to check would be your swing arm bushings

You should always fit the frame-to-mount bolts first , then the mount to tranny bolts..... and the standard mounts don't last long. Either fit Drag Specialty ones as they last longer due to being polyurethane rather than rubber, or better stil use Chopper Hauss (front and rear) ones especially for the performance/stunt orientanted bikes. The Drag Spec ones may make the bike feel a bit 'firm' as in a little less vibration damped but they're good value as they last longer. Chopper Hauss mounts for Dynas are expensive but are so much more stable - the front being of a similar nature to the fronts on Tourers, even using the same rubbers. The rears use FXR/Tourer rubbers and are OK but both are longer lasting if a little 'firm' if Drag Spec 'rubbers' are used. If you don't use the bike a lot the extra cost of the Chopper Hauss mounts seems hard to justify but in either case (standard or Chopper Hauss), the Drag Spec polyurethane mounts are longer lived so if you can put up with a little less vibe-damping it's Drag Spec all the way for me - I use Drag Spec mounts on my '06 XL1200R Sporty for the same reason, longer life/less maintenance. Both my bikes are Hotrods to such and extent that the H-D mounts are not upto the extra duty especially on the heavier Dyna which is 130+ BHP and torque, Sporty is about 100bhp and 85 torque.

Interesting Brandon, I did both mounts on my 2012 Switchback last year. Didn’t have anywhere near as much agro on the rear mount as you but the front was awkward because one of the mounting bolts won’t clear the frame tube. I did buy myself 3/8 flexi head sockets for next time round though. Would you consider the need for an alignment check? What year is yours?
@GilstrapGarage2 жыл бұрын
Mine is a 2005. There’s not really much you can do as far as alignment on the twin cams like you can on the evo drivetrain. You can purchase adjustable motor mounts from big bear choppers and make adjustments to your top stabilizer, but really the best thing for any Harley would be to take it to someone who can true the frame to the drive train.

Not a popular opinion: the bikes before and after the dyna are better bikes. Sorry.
@GilstrapGarage Жыл бұрын
I can get behind that to an extent. The dyna and the twincam softail platforms are 2 of the worst handling frames ever produced. That being said, I’ve only ever owned twincam softails and dynas 🤣 On the contrary, for all the FXR guys out there, that platform might handle amazing, but the cost of entry for a 23 to 41-year-old-bike just doesn’t seem with it anymore.
