You have the best Video on replacing the key Cylinder. Thank you for your time and effort. Normally everything in the dash of a 2003 Avalanche and 1500 p/up is identical. After a long time trying to figure out why a t-20 torx would not grab any screw. I tried a t15 and a T25 with no luck. And... yes I did look into the holes with a flashlight. Lol. All I could see was grease in the holes. Finally I just pried it out with an “F it, I’ll buy a new one to install!” It came out as did the steering column adjustment lever as you said. Then no 4mm could catch anything so I pried the top off too. Would you believe there was no threaded hole for any T-20 stews or a 4mm in my entire clamshell. Apparently in this model they just snap together and hold snug. I thought you’d get a laugh out of my predicament. I am snickering as I text this but not before.

The reason why you have to place the key into the new lock cylinder, and then turn it to the run position- in order for the cylinder to go in all the way- is that the the ignition actuator has to mesh with the ignition switch properly. Remember that when you took out the cylinder, it was in the run position. Therefore, the teeth on the ignition switch are left in the run position as well. In the end, the cylinder and ignition switch have to mesh back to the same spot on the cog.

Great video, thanks! You've saved us countless hours of frustration. On my 2003 Trailblazer, the new cylinder didn't want to drop fully down into the bore. The original cylinder wouldn't go back in either. Looking down the bore with a flashlight, the inner mating surface wasn't in alignment. I suspect the "start position" spring pressure rebounded as the cylinder was extracted. I was able to turn the mating surface more towards the front of the vehicle (clockwise) using a large flat blade screwdriver, and then the new lock cylinder mated correctly. All good now 🙂

You will also need to change the lock cylinders in the doors if you want the new key to match. You can get a set with all the cylinders for your vehicle. Or you can key the new ignition cylinder to match your original key.

You can use a pliers to try and free it but really the last resort would be to change the ignition.

@@Wildflower-ue8qm You need to rattle the key somehow. You can try doing it by hand or if you have one of those handheld massagers or anything that vibrates. Hold it up to the cylinder/key and vibrate it while you try to turn the key. If you don’t have anything that vibrates just try to “jiggle it” by hand while trying to turn it.

It should be exactly the same as in this video ,unless you have a key that has a chip in it, and the 05 trailblazers typically don't have chipped keys unless someone upgraded it. If your key design looks like the one in this video then it doesn't have a chip in it. @@ethansterling take the black round plastic off and you are going to want to drill near the bottom and youll hit the metal lock plate thingy then drill in the middle towards an angle downwards untill you get that metal plate out and then you'll be able to turn it and get it out

Right before you put the new cylinder in, I see two pins sticking out from the housing on the column. Are those crucial to getting the key to turn? Do they both need to be depressed? Because my key wont turn, and I'm wondering if it's these that are the culprit.

@@williamwatson5822 The lock cylinder must be in the Start position before the pin (or piece of stiff wire) can be inserted to effect. I ended up using channel lock pliers to grab the exposed part of the lock cylinder, and I forced it to turn to the Start position. I then was able to insert the pin in the hole at the top and remove the cylinder. -- However, the new cylinder turned out to be openable with the old key, and the reason I wanted to change the cylinder was that a key had been stolen by a black woman named Chalandra (sp?), basement floor 805 N 6th ST, Kansas City, KS 66101. She stole the truck the morning after I changed the lock. I never got the truck back, and nothing happened to her.
