Replacing Michelins Defenders LTX with Kumhos Crugen HT51

I could not pass up on this price on four new tires for my truck at Walmart.

HT51 are amazing outside of the big 3 tire manufacturers. I've had a set on my 03 RAV4 AWD for 3 winters now and they perform amazing without needing a full on snow tire. Ice drifts are predictable, controllable and very fun. Braking distance is great, and doesn't really skid unless under hard braking, which even then the tires grip well. They go up just fine on iced over steep grades. They are a bit noisy and somewhat harsh riding, but in a way that's good for me cause they let me know about every bump, imperfection, and when they start to break traction when I'm driving under harsh conditions. Where I live in California, we either get heavy rain, which leads to flash floods and muddy roads or 5ft-7ft of snow in the winter. Also, CHP or CalTrans doesn't give me shit when they setup check points checking for tire chains because of the 3 peak logo on the tires. I'd definitely buy another set in a couple of years once these tires need replacing due to age. They really only get about 3k miles on them per year.

Those Michelins look like they still have a summer or 2 left on them. I'm considering the Kumhos for next summer. I'll be putting the Hankook ipike snow tires I bought last year back on my Tacoma somewhere around Thanksgiving.

You’re right about the Michelins but I kind of wanted to get it out of the way. I actually kept them on the side just to look at them after being dismounted and yes they’re mostly alright. Good luck with the Kumhos! They’re good tires but the dry traction does suffer a bit if you’re used to the Michelins. I’ll post an update soon.

Have these Crugen tires ever made loud road noise as mileage increases?

I’ve been putting more miles on them and no noise so far. Great tires 🛞 and they’re actually better on wet conditions than in dry traction.

@@Slim1423 yes they went up to. When I got them they were actually higher at Sam’s club but Walmart had a great sale on them. I’d definitely recommend them.

My wife wasn’t too keen on it and if you notice those old ones I had before still could have gone a few thousand miles but I was afraid new tires would go up. I ended up getting a great deal at Walmart.
