Next time with the windows, place some string in the place where the glass will be going. Then as you progress, pull the string out. This will move the flap of rubber around the glass and make insertion easier. Hunt for videos about replacing older auto windshields for clues. Good luck.

This is correct, and you put the join at the bottom not the top and you put good sealer on the metal before the rubber. Look at yourtube for putting rear window in a 66 or 67 chevy pick-up truck.and you start with the ends of tye string at the bottom where you first sit the window in.

Yeah, you did this backwards. You'll have more to do so when you do them you can do them the easy way. The rubber seal should be installed on the glass, and then thin rope installed into the groove that goes over the metal, and then you put one end or the bottom up and on the steel and then you work your way around pulling the rope out which will make the rubber move out of the way so it fits on the metal. Sounds confusing, but is very simple. Look up putting in old car windshields as Charles said. The way you are doing it is begging to break some glass and is so much more work than you need to do. The good news is you got them in and they will work great now that they are in. So no harm.

Great intro! The yard of broken dreams, sadly every marina and boat yard has these derelict boats. Happy to see you are restoring one.

I'm working in very cold conditions at the moment sewing up some boat canopies, so I understand how you appreciate having some heat on board. I'm thinking about investing in an old solid fuel stove for my garage/workshop. Nice job on the windows, though sometimes it is easier to fit the rubber to the glass first, sticking the ends together where they meet. Then lubricate the frame edge and fit a strong string around the channel on the outer edge of the rubber.Cross the string over and let the ends hang down. Then press the glass, with rubber fitted up against the opening. Your assistant should be holding/pushing the glass into the opening from one side and you would pull one end of the string through the opening on the opposite side. This action helps to pull the lip of the rubber over the edge of the frame and tapping in the rubber seal with a soft rubber mallet will bed the window in fully. it's worth trying if you have many windows to do. Keep up the great work and seasons' greetings.

if you look up how to install a back window for a OBS ford you can use the string idea to make life a little easer also i am not 100% and hopefully someone can confirm but i think the split line where the 2 ends meet should be at the bottom not the top so it has a way to drain and not collect water again i could be wrong with boat windows like this i have only ever done truck glass. good project all and all. enjoying the videos wish they were a bit longer but i understand only having the weekend to film them.

Thanks for these videos, I’m so glad you’re uploading them! I’m hoping to buy a similar project at the end of 2021 and I really appreciate watching and learning from you guys. I even found myself checking if you’d uploaded a new video a few days ago which I’ve never done on any KZbin channel before, you explain things really clearly. I hope you keep uploading and stay happy and healthy 👍👍👍

As you fitted a cheap Chinese heater, it might be a good idea to fit some carbon monoxide sensors in the various compartments in the boat. Better safe than dead!

if you use string and dish soap they go in so much easier. Put the gasket on the glass and lay the strong string in the channel that the steel goes in to. lube it up with dish soap and push the unit into place while pulling the string out. ta daaaa! magic.

You need to put the seam on the window gasket at the bottom. Asking for a leak with the seam at the top.

Watched all your videos so far for this project. You are a brave man. Regarding the heating, placing the chinese one may have been a mistake, they always break down in less than one to two years, while the Webasto IS certainly repairable, you only need the right man for the fix. So I hope you held on to that one, you will need it again soon. Best of luck with the rest of your project, looks like it's going to be great!

You need a thick rope to insert the window! Put the elastic on the window, and then insert the rope in a circle into the groove where the iron should be. Then one person from the inside presses down the glass, and the person from the outside gradually tugs the rope in a chalky manner, and the elastic band automatically falls into place. To simplify the work, the window opening can be lubricated with oil.

FYI if you ever need do that again take a single thin piece of white out it in the window track with both ends at the bottom set the window on top of the wire then with one person pushing in on the glass have the other person use a pair of vice grip pliers and pull the wire out at a 90°angle to the glass and the windows will just seat its self just remover to push in where the wire us comeing out

Ok for the next windows first put a string / rope in the rubber, the glass on top and gently pull the string / rope with the rubber over the glass. Search for installing a car window.

Absolutely, popping in the windows should be not that hard at all. Use a soap/water mixture as a lubricant, apply liberally. Also consider to get a decent suction cup to handle the glass, this will give you more control.

About that window, next time use a piece of parachute cord to pull the rubber gasket in place. It's a well known classic car trick.
@laapulsford
@laapulsford 3 жыл бұрын
I think there is another trick for fitting glass into a rubber gasket-type frame. Place a length of thread in the inner groove of the rubber gasket-frame and bring the ends of the thread back to a central point and let the thread hang outside the gasket. Push the glass against the gasket where the cord exits. Pull the cord to pull back the flange on the gasket and allow the glass to fall into the cavity created. I think they use this technique on motor car windscreens.

1. put the seals on the windows first, 2. then place a strong and easy to hold rope (about 4-5mm thick) into the grove which the steel frame is supposed to sit, 3. then place two suction handles on the outside of the window, 4. have somebody hold the window on the outside against the metal frame by starting to set the window seal into the steel on the bottom (where the rope ends overlap), 5. then push the window against the frame while pulling the rope towards the inside from the groove in the seal (this way the seal can curl over the steel edge and mount very easy).

I just did this to a cnc lathe window forget the rope make a flat screw driver type of device out of plastic Duron if possible. Then lube the crap out of it with straight dish soap like Dawn. It will slide right in when you move plastic screwdriver type device around the glass and it will pop right in easy peasy

You can also use lots of dish soap to ease the process, silicone messes up the surroundings an cleaning gets tricky. When setting windows, you can use a washing line. Fit the rubber around the glas, put a string into the seam. By pulling it out, the rubber gives a bit. Enough to fold over the metal. Hard to describe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6GccoCEfNSXbKs

wrong tool brother, soapy water and a very strong string down inside the seal, put the 2 ends of the string at the bottom where the window goes in easy from the inside of the boat, pull the string around the window which will pull the seal outward around the glass. OR use small wooden wedges or triangles to lever the rubber seal outward in a fashion to receive the glass while the rubber seal is held in an open position but this requires many wedges, the string or very small diameter rope is easier. I don't think your Olive Oil will damage your rubber seals over time?
