I’ve been looking all day for a video just like this. ItS my first drum brake job on my 91 ranger and every other video I’ve found was for later years. Only small differences but it’s too much for a newbie like me. Thank you

Thank you! My 1993 is the most difficult to work on. It doesn’t match any of the videos and so I was trying to figure out how to do it. Didn’t realize despite all literature that it had the brake and spring system like the 1990 version. So helpful. But I’ve noticed your two hold in screws are tapered at the end. My old ones are my new ones aren’t. May have to reuse the old just to get the shoes to stay in while I do all the other connections. Wasted hours today fighting my weak arms and gravity. 🤣 glad I found your video.

Just what I needed, inherited a 1989, and it does not have brakes at all, front brakes had been pinched and was in process of looking at the rear. So thank you very much!

Thanks for a great video. The detail pics of the self adjusting mechanism helped me out of a jam with my Ranger. It's been a long time since I have done drum brakes much less self adjusting and I lost track of the sequence of events.

THANK YOU, very much. This was the one video that showed how the whole thing goes together. Mine fell apart when I took the drum off and I was lost. Bought all the parts, hoped it would make sense, and IT DIDN'T. However, I will say that the last spring to clip the shoe to the cable bracket is WAY easier to put in the other way. If you just hook the little end onto the bracket, the other end is in a V shape and you can just use a flat head to push it through the hold and it clicks in place.

Nice video but I need to correct one thing. The flat plate with the spring on the end is part of the parking brake mechanism. The end with the wider gap engages both shoe and the parking brake lever. The lever is only connected to one shoe so that is how force is applied to the other shoe when you set the parking brake.

Very important, clean and lube waffle rubbing pads on backing plate and lube with white lithium grease. One time I didn't and the pads wore away, and it didn't get to an unsafe point, but had to replace backing both plates the next time. Also check for leaking wheel cylinder then pull rubber seals to check for leaks that may be starting. re-seat rubber seals. A little white lithium grease goes anywhere there is metal on metal contact.

Thanks for the video. I just finished installing the hardware on my left wheel, but noticed that the adjuster doesn't rest on the gear teeth, but rather sits on the side of the teeth. I move it back where it engages the gear, but the pressure of the springs turns the gear downward where the adjuster arm is once again disengaged from the teeth. If you follow any of that, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
@JoDaddysGarage4 жыл бұрын
That may be fine. The adjusting arm actually moves up and down to operate. The idea is that you back up and hit our brakes several times. this makes the arm move up and down and that is what makes the adjuster turn to make the brakes tighter.
@knottreel4 жыл бұрын
@@JoDaddysGarage I really appreciate the reply. After re-doing this 4 times, I found my problem. The adjuster arm had to be set on the gear high enough when you first attach the springs. The only way I could keep that adjusting pawl in the right position was stick a cork in the hole where the pivot hook attaches. That held everything in place for attaching my springs. When I finished, I removed the cork and everything stayed in place and adjuster works fine. Thanks so much for everything.

Thank you. Most vids on this subject are for 10” drum rotors which have a different style of connecter plate for the e brake. Did you have any play in your e brake beaded line and how did you fix that if so? My enrage hasn’t worked since I got the vehicle 6 years ago.

My rear brakes are locking up on my 93 ranger, any advise on what it could be?
@JoDaddysGarage3 жыл бұрын
My first suggestion is to check the brake hose that connects to the rear axle. They can deteriorate, and cause the fluid to stay under pressure.
@joebob3443 жыл бұрын
I ordered a brake drum rebuild kit and the picture showed the color coded springs. When it arrived all of the springs were white. Are the different colors different spring rates? Also, do you know if Ford Ranger backing plates fit a 66 Mustang? Is it the same bolt pattern to the axle flange?
@JoDaddysGarage3 жыл бұрын
The springs are made for each specific location. I do not know about the backing plates.

@@JoDaddysGarage thanks for reply, bleed them again and they work now... bleed again and accidentally ran out of fluid in the reservoir so will need to reveled all 4 wheels. Do you think I need to bench bleed the MC also or will it be ok?
@JoDaddysGarage3 жыл бұрын
@@av8r1946 Well, it would have been best to bench bleed at the start if it's a new MC. At this point, just rebleed the lines.

Just a suggestion but when you start out doing one side of the vehicle taking the brakes off putting them back on why not post permanently up in the left or right corner whether you're working on the passenger side or the driver side it's very difficult to tell if you're watching on a small cell phone.

Did you have any issues getting the adjuster lever to sit on the adjuster wheel after reassembly? After I put the red spring across the bottom back on it pulls the lever away from the adjuster wheel. The cable that runs to the adjuster lever from the top looks to be a little loose too. Everything else looks to be lined up fine, but the lever and adjuster wheel aren't touching like they should be. Any idea what the problem might be?
@JoDaddysGarage8 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you may not have the cable running correctly. Check to see if it slipped behind the carrier.
