Great work! Thank you for putting this together. I am about to attempt this, this weekend. Looking forward to a leaky free berth!

Thanks! I used your tutorial to replace the windows of my 22ft Gouteron Ghibli sailboat and they turned out quite nice. Easy and quick. I made a reference to your video in my own video and will put a link in the description if that's cool. Cheers

Looks like a nice practical method will most likely be copying it for my boat windows. Do you know if normal polycarbonate sheet ok from plastic sheet warehouse ok? Probably only 100 euro and they can probably cut out shapes for me. Is it the same stuff as the specialist boat windows?
@benjamintucker1964 Жыл бұрын
That is a good question, I would think not and would try to go with a marine grade plexiglass for better long-term benefits Happy Sailing from South Texas Corpus Christi

3M VHB ( very high bond ) Tape Serial No. 5952 , then Dow Corninig 795 to seal the edges. No screws, MUCH easier. Super reliable, they hold in high rise windows with VHB tape.

would you use both screws and tape , ive already cut holes

Great and informative video. Just bought a 1968' Buchan 37' that I'm fixing up myself. Going to be doing my windows this way! Do you order yhe glass to size or cut it yourself? What tool to cut it, if you cut it?

thanks mate good tips such a messy job . i use clear silicone looks a bit tidier . you can get clear silicone for boats at extra cost because it says marine ,tut

I would advice against using a finger instead make a 45 degree bevel on the outside the silicone will adhere better because there is no whisper thin layer at the edges
@ChemicalOrbit2 жыл бұрын
Nice video, I think the problem people mention in the comments is that you got silicone on the inside of the glass. You can prevent this by using less silicone in the corners, and removing it with alcohol before it dries.

Yes great idea, I have also learned since posting this video many years ago about a two sided sticky tape thar can be used to mount and seal the plexiglass windows

nice install. like to add, diyer may consider the option to use polycarbonate instead of acrylic for glass? it scratches easier but is many times stronger.. depends on boat and intended use

good idea, what is cost difference between the two products?

Couple things: Dow 795 is the best silicone to use, it's specifically formulated for acrylic. Don't use 5200, acrylic is about the only thing it won't stick to. The windows will leak if you use it. Second, the screw holes need to be a little bigger than the screw so the acrylic can expand and contract with temperate changes. About 1/4" holes for #10 screws. And turn them in just barely tight. Sight along the edges, if the plastic defects at all at the screws they're too tight. Back them out a little.

Why not using a polyurethane foam tape, (self adhesive), instead of silicone? It lasts more, is cleaner to apply, and gives a more perfect finish. It's what many boats come with from factory... I did it once (about 10 years ago), and it is still there. The boat is in bright sun Portugal...

Does home depot or lowes sell that tape
@mariotavaresdasilva69937 жыл бұрын
Hi, David! I don't know. In Europe it is manufactured by a company called Wurth, in Germany. It is used for automobile purposes also. I believe 3M (at least) must have a similar product. You stick it in the outside, adjusting by the window hole, screw in the glass through the tape, and then just cut off the extra tape width. It is the solution new boats used to come with. More recently, I have seen plexiglass windows glued with automobile windscreen adhesive. it looks great (no screws), but I don't know about efficiency.

Not quite sure what your asking , A better finish on the quality of the work, or a better finish on the quality of the video, cause of the two videos you posted with only one subscriber you show some body scrapping barnacles of a boat lol just saying the obvious, don't bitch about somebody else's work tell you start posting some thing better of your own, best of luck in 2019

@@danbell1618 a rough cowboy job hardly, they haven't leak a drop since installation and did it for a fraction of the price the local boat yard wanted to charge me, and I used the tools and supplies I had on hand, so go scrape some more barnacles
