Funny you should mention 1989. It was 7/2/89 when I towed my brother's 1979 Monte Carlo to the shop. He had purchased it new and after 115K it needed an engine rebuild. He didn't want to invest in it so I took it on as a project. By October I had it running. It ran so well that I kept driving it. 35 years later and I'm still driving it. I've only put 69K on it, I've always had 2 or 3 cars, and I didn't drive to work. 35 years!!!

It took 2 years, but in 2003 I found a 1988 LS that was in good shape. That's been my other everyday car.

I bought a brand new New Yorker in '89, beautiful car, and it turned out to be a good car. It had the 3.0 Mitsubishi engine, which is a very good engine, but lacked the power it really needed. Just thought I would throw that in. Nice job on the oil pan. Thanks for sharing.

Kenny, good afternoon. I'm not there to see and inspect the new oil pan but on the video, it looks like the new oil pan is made a little tougher or is that just my old eyes playing tricks on me? Kenny you have done a fantastic job as usual but I got ta be honest when you started say let's wrap this up at about 26 minutes in, I started getting excited thinking ahead that "Are we going to "Mexico" to test the new pan for possible leaks. I love when we go to 'Mexico" and any time that you are installing bolts I expect to hear "you don't have to go Bananas". I would be so disappointed if you didn't say that. Love ya brother. Thanks for making me laugh as it is some of the only joy that I have. Say hi to Meg for me and Gigi too and Aiden and Abby. You have the 'BEST' auto repair channel on KZbin.

Hi Kenny Thanks for the video, I was about to do the same repair on my car after the mechanic used the sump as a jake spot. ( i won't be going there again) I don't have a source of heat in case i can't get the gasket to give so i will be getting the new place to fit the pan for me. Your video saved me from potentially getting stuck half way thru the job. Thank you.

Ken, i would use deadblow and whack the bottom of pan like you hit a parking stop. Usually came loose after a few hits. Never tried the torch method tho i believe it would help. Have fun!👋

It was surprising to see how much oil was left in the pan, despite thorough draining. Thus a regular oil change is not quite a one hundred percent change.

That sealant should have set overnight before adding oil , could start leaking because as the engine heats up with non cured sealant you can bet the hot oil is looking to get out. Sealant needs to set to guarantee a lasting seal.

That would be optimal, but tying up a lift is not realistic for a shop. Also, hyundai/Kai doesn't recommend it. I agree with you, though. Keep wrenching 🔧

Kenny I just did an oil pan and followed the instructions on the Permatex Tube. " Allow 1 hour drying before Torquing. Allow 24 hours before adding fluids." Have you witnessed any failures not following Permatex directions? It could be a time saver if not required.

Kenny What happens if gasket maker gets squished and mixes with the oil ? will it plug up things and ruin the motor? I think i used to much and its in my oil now.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 15 күн бұрын
Just gets caught in the strainer, and will mostly come out in the first oil change. Best to change that oil now, and see just how much comes out with it. go to the dollar store and get a platsic sieve, and use it to catch it out of the draining oil, and you will see what is in there. Cool engine, not hot as those cheap dollar store sieves will melt.

From experience I would add 1 thing. Ensure that you don't have a glob of the Permatex/Silicone in the pan bolt hole when tightening the pan bolts. Too much and it will strip the aluminum threads out upon tightening.

@Michael-yi4mc was tongue in cheek comment. He just did a video saying to remove filter first or there would be residual oil left in pan. May not even have applied to this vehicle. And of course, any residual would get removed since he was changing pan.

😅i hate it when things are glued on. Instead of using gasket sealer, i had a water pump that way and no place to pry on it, ending up braking it off then the clean up is tuff

Kenny, at just after 28 minutes (and, yes I pause the video often and sometimes replay sections) you had the engine running and looking for leaks and I was yelling, "Let's go to Mexico!", but you ignored me or didn't hear me. I'm good with that, are you?
