Finally got a head donor engine onto the stand and in this video we begin the teardown with the top end. I was hoping for a head I could just swap into a daily driver, but instead we find way more fun.

crumbling intake valve stem seals is an indication that this engine was overheating so better to check the cooling system. it is a good idea to have the head gasket surface checked with a straight edge and rpobably resurfaced.

Good feedback, I thought the same so this head did go to get resurfaced. Twice, even, because they screwed it up the first time.

Learned a lot - thanks :) ... I don't have the tool to take off and replace the valves, it seems, or do I need that ? If So hoping a new head gasket alone or maybe also shave the head will fix mine up, new valves on eBay are 5 bucks or so each, but without the gaskets and guides, I guess I'd have to look for separately - did get the full ENG gasket set for 55.00 needed for the 68 225 slant 6 tho... Can you let the head soak or spray cleaner inside to help clean the valves if not taken out !? And what gaskets needed to replace when ordering new valves, any other special tools needed? I helped replace a head gasket on a 1966 200 sr8 6 yrs ago on my mustang, and only have the head shaved ...and never messed with the valves or lifters etc, in 2012, and runs great...but yeah, Thanks for these videos :)

A head set will come with guide seals. If you can get the valves out, you can lap them to look at their condition. I have a lapping video in the 5.9 series. Problems might need seats cut. New guides are often useful but not really required to run. Slop there just ends up burning oil.

New valves are pretty cheap I would definitely just put new ones all the way around

Agreed, nowdays new valves are cheaper than the time required to grind old ones and I did go with new, but I still had Dr. Torque grind the old ones because it's an interesting process.

What cast number is the best slant 6 head. No egr or smog

There are several casting numbers that are basically the same. I'd look for something from 1968-1974.
