Controversy surrounded that victory, however, as it appeared he was already eliminated but for some reason the officials were too distracted to notice. Because of that, Stone Cold was able to sneak back into the match and costing some potential winners a chance to win this rumble. But when replaying these rumbles, if the actual winner doesn’t succeed in this match, it’s an ‘open season’ situation for anyone looking to finally make their mark. And sure enough, it was somebody’s ‘time’ to win a rumble and secure a place in the champions’ rumble… Big… Bad… Vader… how would his career have been different if he had won the ’97 rumble? On the one hand, if he ‘still’ had to compete in that ‘In Your House’ Final Four match, there was still a 25% chance he’d have gone on to the main event regardless. But imagine if instead of teaming with Mankind to fight Owen Hart & British Bulldog, the reigning tag champions at the time, he fought Sycho Sid for the championship in that No Disqualification match. If we had thought the original set-up for that main event was brutal, with Vader involved it probably would’ve been an encounter we’d never imagined would’ve happened, but it could’ve made for quite a match. In a way, Vader would ‘still’ get to go to WrestleMania, but the fans would’ve known that it was truly ‘Vader Time’ for the big man to be in the main event (Maybe the WWF Champion by then… ‘maybe’). But who was my MVP of the 1997 rumble? Let’s get down to the numbers: Of the thirty men featured in this rumble, SEVENTEEN men secured the most eliminations (Now ‘that’ is over half the roster). The highest count of the night reached ‘4’ eliminations, which is three points higher than the average ‘1’ elimination. Since Vader has already secured himself a place in the final rumble, the nominees for the Golden MVP Award for ‘coolest’ performance are: Savio Vega… and Hunter Hearst Helmsley a.k.a. Triple H Both men performed exceptionally well during this rumble, probably better than their actual time spent during this event. But if I had to pick just one, I would end up siding with Savio Vega, which is funny because in this match he eliminated Triple H just as he was doing well. While I can’t imagine if Vega was ever considered ‘main event’ material, he certainly fought like he wanted to be in the main event. And without a doubt this applies to the reason why Savio Vega is still a popular competitor even after this point. The Dull Participation Medal for the ‘lamest’ performance goes to: Pierroth While it’s not a big surprise that Pierroth wasn’t going to win this rumble, it would be the fact he was eliminated ‘so early’ and not even by the hands of Mil Mascaras. Not a good showing for the guy who’s supposed to be the leader of the Los Boricuas group that ran wild way back when. Still, it’s not to discourage the guy’s good name as I’m sure he was one of the finest when it comes to making guest appearances during this rumble. But judging based on this overall performance… I just wasn’t impressed. Someone’s time was bound to come and right now it’s Vader’s time to prove he deserves a place amongst all the men who’ve won their right to appear in the upcoming Champions’ rumble. As the spaces start to become limited, we ask ourselves the following questions: Who did YOU want to win this rumble? Did Steve Austin deserve to win that year? If a few of these competitors hadn’t actually eliminated themselves, would they have stood a chance at winning the rumble? And the biggest question of them all: Who’s next?

It's exactly why I love Sting and Flair. Both of them let Vader beat the crap out of them. Vader worked very stiff. Hogan & HBK didn't like how stiff he was and killed his character. 1993 was prime Vader. He's definitely in my top 5 favorite

Even with 60% of "The Click" gone at this point, he was still killing guys main event pushes. Although to be fair, several wrestlers said that Vader rarely washed his ring gear and for that reason didn't want to work with him. But that didn't seem to be Shawn's only reason.

Austin’s reaction when Bret came out in the Rumble is one of those iconic moments. Jesse James was playing the gimmick of “The Real Double J”, claiming that he had sung Jeff Jarrett’s country song released the year before, as a way to stick it to Jarrett after he left for WCW. What’s crazy is that it was true! Also, Mil Mascaras also supposedly refused to allow anyone to eliminate him from the match, and demanded that he be allowed to eliminate himself.

I think the original idea behind Fake Razor and Fake Diesel (other than making fun at Hall and Nash) was to send a message to every workers: "We create the gimmicks, and you're just portraying them...but everybody could". Of course, they realized that it wasn't that true.

Regarding the fake Razor Ramon and Diesel--sure, there could've been some ill will toward Nash and Hall from their former employers, but I think it was mostly the WWF wanting to keep the characters active despite the original actors being gone. When the fake Razor and Diesel debuted, the WWF basically stated, "Yeah, we know these guys aren't Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. We never said they were." Hell, "Fake Diesel" himself would get the impostor treatment later on in his career. At one point, the now-WWE weren't sure whether or not Glen Jacobs would be leaving the company, so what they did is have someone else (IIRC, the same guy who wrestled as Festus) show up and start stalking Kane, wearing an outfit identical to Kane's original outfit (including the mask, of course) and mimicking all of the mannerisms Kane originally had. If Glen Jacobs had indeed quit, WWE would've said "Glen Jacobs was the impostor, and this new guy was the real Kane all along!", keeping the character alive. (On a side note--if you'll recall how Kane's "burned face" looked fake as hell when he initially unmasked, Glen Jacobs not being the real Kane would've been a great in-story explanation for that.) As it turned out, it was all unnecessary. Glen Jacobs didn't quit, and both the Impostor Kane character and his story arc were quietly buried.

Funny story about the fake Razor and fake Diesel: the WWF were teasing Razor and Diesel’s return. WCW thought Hall and Nash were going back to WWF because of those teases so WCW gave them both huge contract extensions to keep them even though they were never leaving 😆

In regards to the fake Razor (Rick Bognar) and Diesel (Glen Jacobs aka Issac Yankem aka Kane) WWE (or more so Vince McMahon) believed that the gimmicks would 'get over' no matter what worker portrayed the them. Also it was a shot at WCW in trying to dilute the impact that Scott and Kevin would have in WCW. The whole thing led to a lawsuit that WWE brought against WCW in that WWE believed that the gimmicks Scott and Kevin were portraying in WCW closely matched the gimmicks they portrayed in WWE which in their eyes was a copyright/licencing/gimmick infringement as WWE continued to own the rights to the gimmicks after they left. On a side note, Jim Cornette was tasked to train the fake Razor and Diesel in how to work like Scott and Kevin i.e. throw their style punches and execute their signature moves. WWE didn't see a whole lot of talent in Rick Bognar but did with Glen Jacobs, they released Bognar after a short time but kept Jacobs around which ultimately led to him becoming Kane. Also you know the Sultan is Rikishi?

One of the AAA (Mexican) guys eliminated himself in this Royal Rumble because he didn't want his character to look weak by having someone else eliminate him. So instead he just looked dumb for not knowing the rules. That and Ahmed contradicted the 1992 Royal Rumble when Savage jumped over the top rope to go after Jake. He wasn't supposed to do that because he was booked to goto the final 4. Monsoon and Heenan awkwardly explained that he wasn't eliminated because nobody else threw him over.

Steve Austin had the record with 10 in 97 till Kane broke it with 11. That was broken by the big dog 13. The thing with fake Razor and Diesel was when Scott Hall and Kevin went to WCW, they were still using there characterizes of Razor Ramon and Diesel. Things like throwing the toothpick and WWF did not like that and tried to sue them. But because of that WWF said Razor and Diesel was coming back Hall and Nash and an early termination in their contract so WCW thought there were leaving WCW to go back to WWF and had them sign a contract extension that paid them both 400,000 each to stay.

Razor Ramon was Scott Hall's idea but he still didn't own the rights to the IP. In storyline nobody in WWF was meant to believe they were the same characters, unlike when Doink was replaced a few years earlier. Jim Ross acted as though they were the same but it was part of a weird, short-lived failed heel turn for JR.

Ahmed Johnson eliminated himself after chasing Farooq , Farooq eliminated himself after being chased by a 2x4 wielding Johnson , Mil Mascaras basically said fuck it if I'm not winning I'll eliminate myself and after all that we got Austin being eliminated , which apparently none of the refs saw , then Austin sneaked back in and eliminated Undertaker then Vader and after Bret Hart eliminated Fake Diesel Austin eliminated him . After all that nonsense we got the Final Four pay per view which was supposed to decide the №1 contender between Austin , Vader , Undertaker and Bret but Shawn Michaels vacated the WWF Title so the match was for the WWF title instead with the new champion facing Sycho Sid next night on RAW .

Dame! I still didn't get Faarooq & Bret against eachother! When i was a lot younger i bought the VHS tape of this Rumble. I assumed that the Undertaker would win because i knew he faced Sid at Mania, so i was waiting for him to come out but when it got to 29 & he wasn't there then i was confused because i knew that at that point no one had ever won the Rumble from number 30. I remember thinking that any of the final 9 guy's that were still in when Taker arrived could win. Possibly my favourite final 10 in the Rumble ever.

Mideon at number 4! Rick Bogner played fake Razor… RIP. Vince owned the named “Razor Ramon” and “Diesel” and by him having other guys plays these roles it was to be a slap in the face to the guys who originally played those characters. Vince was super salty about losing 2 of his bigger stars and alot of litigation followed between the 2 organizations.

I have an idea for the next to last rumble before the championship: A Rumble with all 27 real winners of the Royal Rumble and the three most asociated: Kane for his record in appearances and eliminations, Chris Jericho for most cumulative Rumble time and Kof Kingston for 2nd most appearances and regular feats.

Most people think that the Mania main event was supposed to be Bret vs Shawn. But i believe that it was supposed to be a triple threat between Bret Shawn & Sid. & Stone Cold would have reluctantly teamed with Taker against Vader & Mankind, in exchange for a match against Bret at the next PPV whitch i believe would have been for the title. There is quite a bit of evidence at the time to support this.

Fake Diesel and Razor Ramone were both a subtle, yet no less personal, swipe at Kevin Nash and Scott Hall (partially due to the infamous Curtain Call Incident where they broke Kayfabe with Shawn Michaels and Triple H by engaging in a group hug before the crowd) and a chance to involve Jim Ross in a storyline as this bitter, heel-turned commentator with a grudge against his employers where he claimed to have convinced Diesel and Razor to rejoin the roster, passing off pale imitations as the real deal. Fake Diesel was portrayed by Glenn "Big Red Machine Kane" Jacobs.

I think this was the Rumble where they STRUGGLED to fill out the roster. Vince had to go get a bunch of Luchadores to compete and they weren't familiar with the rules and apparently couldn't follow the run sheet, which lead to a self elimination.

Random Wrestling Sketches *Roman Reigns is backstage, searching through an old box of antiques* Roman: (muttering to himself) *Grumblegrumble* I'm the f***ing Head of the Table. I shouldn't have to deal with s**t like these antiques... *grumblegrumble* Why can't Triple H run through this box of curios himself? *Suddenly, Roman finds what appears to be an old oil lamp in the box, and pulls it out* Roman: Huh? What's this doing here? (starts rubbing and polishing the lamp) Could probably fetch a good sum at the auctions, once it's cleaned up... *Suddenly, a stream of pink smoke emerges from the lamp, and from that smoke comes none other than Macho Man Randy Savage, who now appears to have pointed ears and bright green skin* Randy: *OHHHH YEAHHHHH!!!* Thanks for gettin' me out of there, brother! I've been rubbin' against the walls of that lamp so long, I swear I'm startin' to smell of rust! Roman: (incredulously) Macho Man Randy Savage? Randy: No, brother, I ain't the Macho *Man* no more! I've transcended the planes of humanity an' become a Macho *Genie!* Ohhh yeahhh!! Roman: "Genie," huh? Let me guess, you grant wishes as well? Randy: Sure do, brother! (takes off his sunglasses) An' judgin' by the look on your face, I'd say *you're* in search of wishin' yourself, ain't ya? Roman: (sighs) Yeah, Randy, I just... I just feel like people ain't giving me my proper due respect and attention, you know? *I wish more people would acknowledge me.* Randy: (concerned expression) Uh, brother? You ever heard the phrase "be careful what you wish for"? Roman: Yeah, so what? Are you saying you can't grant me that wish? Some genie you are... Randy: Oh, I *can* grant it, brother! Ain't no question 'bout that! It's just, some of what you get with it might not be what you like. You good with that? Roman: Yeah, sure, whatever. Now grant me my wish, genie. Randy: You got it, brother! (pulls out a Slim Jim, pops it between his teeth and snaps it in half) *Randy teleports back inside the lamp after he snaps the Slim Jim. For a few moments, Roman sits expectantly, and then Triple H walks into the room* Triple H: Alright, Roman? You found anything expensive in that box? Roman: Uh, yeah, Trips. How about these? (he pulls out some old championship belts with built-in candle-holders) Triple H: Wow, mama! Those should fetch a few hundred bucks at least! (pats Roman's shoulder) Good job, Roman. You keep this up, I'll see about getting you more places in the upcoming action! Roman: (happy smile) *Later that day, Roman is busy doing push-ups, when Seth Rollins shows up* Seth: Hey, Roman. Just wanted to say, good job in the ring tomorrow! If you win, we'll go to dinner with our families, and *I'll* pay for all your food. You like that? Roman: Very much, man. (frees one of his hands to shake Seth's) *Later on, Roman can be seen walking down a hallway, passing various wrestlers and managers who keep congratulating him on a job well done and how much they respect him. He smiles even wider, clearly enjoying all the attention. But then...* *Roman is busy cleaning the top of a locker, when Nia Jax sneaks up to him and taps him on the shoulder* Nia: (slyly) Hey, Roman. Uh, I mean *Tribal Chief.* Roman: Nia. (steps down to look at her) What would you ask of me? Nia: Okay, um, I was wondering if I could borrow the keys to your hotel room for tonight? Roman: (not entirely sure where this is going) Okay, why, though? Nia: Well, since me and Bilbo have been going out two weeks now, I thought I should give him a real treat, you know? Like, I'll take him out to dinner, and then I'll take him clubbing, so we can do some karaoke, and then, (at this point, a really *cheeky* look creeps onto her face) and then, we're gonna take him back to your hotel room, and I'm gonna *rock. His. Worrrllllddddd...* Roman: (now uncomfortable) You don't gotta tell me this, Nia. Nia: No, no, I swear I won't hurt him! (cheeky grin and wink) But I won't mind if he decides to show me "Sting"... *If you know what I mean.* (she starts elbowing Roman in the ribs repeatedly, wilfully ignoring his discomfort) Roman: *YOU DON'T GOTTA TELL ME THIS!!* (Takes a moment to calm down) Okay, fine. Nia, here's my hotel keys. (drops them into her hand) Go off and do what you want with your Hobbit boyfriend, but *I don't wanna know the details, okay?* Nia: (smiling with fake innocence) Thanks, cousin! You're the best! (she hugs him and then runs off, singing cheerfully) *Later on, Roman is busy inspecting his shoes, when R-Truth walks in on him* R-Truth: Heyyyy, Tribal Chief! Can I borrow your shoes, man? Roman: (suspicious) Why? R-Truth: Oh, nothin' weird! I just wanna compare 'em to Randy Orton's, see which is better. Roman: (giving him the shoes) Here, you can have them for twenty minutes, but no longer, got it? *Later on, Roman is visiting a supermarket, when John Cena storms up behind him* John: (in a cold, calm voice) Tribal Chief. I heard you were trash-talking my house earlier. The Cenation demands punishment. Roman: (trying to stay calm, whilst turning his head around) I'm not in the mood for this, John. (waves hand in front of face) I can't see you, remember? John: No, but you *can* see *this!* (He slaps an entire cake into Roman's face, showering him with icing, before walking off) *The rest of the day goes by in the same way. Roman eventually ends up running from the massive crowd of people who are either acknowledging him because they want to ask favours, or because they want to bash him up. He finally finds shelter at an abandoned house with a swimming pool* Roman: (pant, pant) Oh, my... s**t, this is a nightmare. *This* isn't what I wanted. (muttering) This is your fault, you stupid genie... (takes off his shirt) I'll go for a swim, that should calm me down... *Roman then dives into the pool... only to resurface a few minutes later, screaming in pain, with an alligator's teeth locked into his butt. Just then, Nikki Cross runs out of the house with a camera* Nikki: Oooh! If it isnae Roman Reigns, the Heid o' the Table! (takes a photo of the biting) D'ye mind tellin' Nikki if it hurts doon there? Roman: *STOP ACKNOWLEDGING ME, NIKKI!! STOP ACKNOWLEDGING ME!!*
