There was a mistranslation in the shower scene that changes the meaning somewhat. Anju, lamenting that she never got to confess her feelings to Daiya, was supposed to ask Kurena if she was going to let Shin know about her feelings, "Are you sure you don't want to tell HIM." Kurena responds with "I don't think I have the right," reflecting that since he's the one who will carry her once she's dead, she doesn't feel like she has the right to burden him further with her feelings. The CR translation changed the "him" to "her" making ti sound like Anju's asking about Lena instead.

Yeah, subs in later episodes have a lot of errors, probably due to time constrains. The re translation accompanying the official dub should fix the problem.

There was also a beautiful visual that turned Shin into a shinigami with the forefront of the wreckage around him acting as wings that Kurena sees in one of the shots not shown in your vid, but can be sort of made out with the pic at 10:33 That was the moment Shin became Kurena's reaper and gives more context to the above comment.

There's added dramatic irony if you read the history of San Magnolia in the light novels. The revolution the Alba are celebrating was led by a martyr they name their country after--the one with the statue. She's executed by the same people she fought to save because she was born into the class the revolutionists were fighting against. They're celebrating the same very structure that they're carrying out now, but that on the surface appears as righteous and safe as they are living in the 85 districts.

Coming here after episode 22 is an absolute pleasure. The whole episode felt like a direct callback to the exact feelings and interpretations you made and I'm so happy that it turned out like that, it's incredible to see what an anime like 86 can really achieve with a good story combined with an excellent direction.

You're beautiful. But yes, highly agree. 86 has been an extremely faithful adaptation so far. The first cour is going to adapt the first volume of the light novel. As an avid (get it?) 86 fan, I'm extremely pleased by the adaptation so far. I think it is easily the best anime of the season.

I have read the light novel before the anime came out and was absolutely astonished at how much care they put into adapting it. The way they visualized the scenes, rearranged the scenarios, and the symbolisms that is honestly really hard to convey is simply short of amazing. It's suprising how they've managed to stay faithful to the source material yet still make it feel fresh to watch despite having read the novel before, definitely my top pick for this season especially hard to come to this conclusion since there's so many great shows this time.

Also love the direction in the shots from 13:02, showing raven surrounded by the walls, figuratively representing the 86's entrapment as soldiers in a war they were forced into . But as he continues to explain that they fight at their own liberty, the shot at 13:13 reveals he was never confined to such walls.

The one thing that I really gravitated towards this episode that you briefly touched on was the food scene and how that made Lena feel. Although used sparsely throughout, that idea of food and consumption has been very craftily sprinkled throughout, right from the beginning even, I remember a shot of some food falling into an immediate transition where the sound and impact gets transferred onto the battle field. It's been such a consistent throughline where dropped food has been used as this kind of misdirection and it all coming around in such a visceral way for Lena was perfect. Either way 86 has been such a treat for me too, and I really do think it's directing has so much found within it, and seeing different points of interpretation or analysis done, like your focus on fireworks really makes the show come alive.

Now coming from this week's episode 8, we learn of the Doctor's connection to Undertaker. The Doctor missed out on some much needed information for herself.

Good timing on this with memorial day just behind us. There's such a distinct difference in how the holiday and this episode can be viewed: dying for your country and dying for your loved ones. Memorial day is always a sad time for my family, thinking about the loved ones we've lost to war. We remember them and the sacrifices they made; not as sacrifices for country but for brother and sister. We're lucky to still live in a place free of fascism like the world experienced by the characters, but that insidious ideology is always right around the corner. This show is shockingly relevant. Thank you for this, it was strong stuff.

I was a little surprised by how much I liked this show. It's not often that I can remember so many specific scenes after I've seen something, and the vast majority of the ones I remember from Eighty Six are just conversations. The characters' subtle changes in expression are immaculate and the voicework is incredible. I do have some qualms about the plot but the character writing, shot direction, music, literally everything else is so strong that it's small potatoes in comparison. It's honestly a mystery to me why this show isn't more popular than it is.

Man I really like this show, I just hate how ep 8 undermined the entirety of the racial elements and discrimination we had set up earlier. We get a very forced backstory on Annette and her childhood with an 86, where she acts erratically and out of character, and talk about how her father pioneered developments into the para RAID technology using the inherent powers of 86 children to communicate telepathically. The problem is that Annette is now what, 17? I don't think its every actually stated but her and Lena are supposed to be of similar age, which means that these characters were living in a para RAID-free world next to 86s in peacetime like, a decade ago at most. What?? I'm supposed to believe all of this stuff happened literally 10 years ago? The insane widespread brainwashing of an entire country making them forget that their childhood neighbors were even humans? But Lena was saved by Shin's brother as a child right?? When did this war start? For God's sake, the members of spearhead have already been soldiers for 5 years, what are these time frames?? I wanna love this show so bad because it looks and sounds great and I love the world, but this random exposition dump just completely broke all of my immersion and ruined the premise of a whole race secretly being genocided for the greater good of a country when I'm expected to believe that everyone just conveniently forgot about them just so Annette can have some backstory with the 86.
@kllrnooooova
@kllrnooooova 3 жыл бұрын
Annette acting "out of character" was just her lashing out and trying to bring Lena down. For the weird time frames thing, here is the full context: Nine years earlier, year 358 of the Republic calendar, year 2136 of the global calendar. The Republic’s eastern neighbor and superpower of the northern continent, the Empire of Giad, declared war on all its neighboring countries and began attacking with an army of the world’s first completely autonomous unmanned combat drone, Legion. Faced with the Empire’s overwhelming military strength, the Republic Armed Forces were decimated within half a month. As what was left of the army gathered its remaining forces to stall the invasion via hopeless delay tactics, the Republic’s government made two decisions. The first was the evacuation of all the Republic’s citizens to the eighty-fifth administrative Sector. The second was Presidential Order #6609. The Special Wartime Peace Preservation Act. This law acknowledged all persons of Colorata descent within the borders of the Republic as inimical characters and supporters of the Empire and allowed the stripping of their civilian rights. They were designated as targets of monitoring and isolated in internment camps outside the eighty-five Sectors. This act was, of course, in violation of the Republic’s constitution and the spirit of the five-hued flag. The law also did not include Alba, who formerly lived in the Empire. Neither did it spare Colorata who were not originally from the Empire. It was a policy of blatant racism and discrimination. The Colorata were opposed to the law, of course, but their opposition was silenced by violence at the hands of the government. Some Alba, however few, also cried out against the law, but the majority accepted it. The eighty-five Sectors were far too small to accommodate the sheer number of civilians, and there was nowhere near enough food, land, or labor for everyone. False rumors were spread that the Republic’s defeat in the war came as a result of the Colorata’s spying. Those rumors were far easier for the civilians to accept than coming to terms with their country’s technological inferiority. But more than anything, in a situation where they were surrounded and isolated by enemies, they needed something, someone, to take their frustrations out on. This justification by way of eugenics spread quickly among the populace. The Alba, who founded the country that stood as the foremost advocate of democracy-the greatest, most humane of all forms of government-were the superior race. By contrast, the Colorata, with their outdated, cruel, and inhumane imperialism, were an inferior species-barbaric and foolish subhumans, pigs in human form and the result of an evolutionary blunder. Thus, all Colorata in the Republic were banished to internment camps where they were forced into labor and conscripted for the sake of constructing the Gran Mule. Their properties and belongings were requisitioned by the government to fund the construction of the wall and the war effort, and the Alba civilians who were spared from conscription, labor, and wartime taxes all praised the government’s humane methodology. The Alba mocked the Colorata as a lesser species, calling them the Eighty-Six. This discriminatory approach ultimately manifested two years later with the introduction of drones manned by living soldiers-and all those soldiers were of the Eighty-Six. Despite pouring all their efforts into producing a Republic-made unmanned drone, no attempt ever achieved the level where it could withstand live combat. But there was no way the superior Alba could admit to failing to produce such a machine when the inferior Empire could. Since the Eighty-Six were not considered human, having one pilot the machine would categorize it not as a mounted craft but as an unmanned drone. The Republic Militarized Autonomous Drone known as the Juggernaut, manufactured by Republic Military Industries (RMI), was lauded by the civilians upon its release as an innovative, cutting-edge, and humane weapon system that minimized human casualties to zero. The Eighty-Six who served as pilots were designated information-processing units-Processors-making the Juggernaut an Operated Drone. Hope this makes things clearer

Afaik the war has been going on for longer than the 5 (or more?) years the 86 have been fighting (alone). The Republic of Magnolia as it is now was founded because their enemies developed the AI robots and the Republic was completely overwhelmed and about to lose so they needed a huge expendable force. If you compare the show to WW1 to WW2 Germany (which it it clearly at least a little bit inspired from) you can see similarities in the time spans. WW1 ended in 1918 and since then hate against the Jews started to rise slowly. After Hitler came to power in 1933 it only took the NAZIs about 2 years to strip Jews of most of their rights. Most of Germany followed and acted on the will of the national socialist party leading up to WW2, if they wanted to or not, because if they openly admitted to being against Hitler they would face the same fate as Jews, homosexuals etc.. I think the same thing happens in the show where they are either living in blissful ignorance like all the "soldiers" (and Anette) we've seen, ignore it in their day to day lives and pass this mindset on to their children, are too afraid to speak up because of various reasons or are simply too young to remember. Since we don't know the whole history of the country and the war this is partly speculation but the situation portrayed isn't really unprecedented. Don't quote me on any of this, it's just what I think I remember.

@@copyability Novel reader here, just to add some information about everything. The war had been going on for about 10-12 years and I don't know if the anime has mentioned it or will mention it so I'll put this lower and warn you about spoilers. So Spoilers The 86 are people who came mostly from the Empire and this whole discrimination thing started out as just a Republic being Paranoid about spies until they realize that they need an expendable force, and the 86 got chosen because of some sick irony, sending people related to or from the Empire against the Empire. The Government like with Hitler and the Nazis, began to dehumanize the 86 and put the blame of their early lost on their shoulders, killing majority of the goodwill the 86 had with the Alba as most began to blame them. As year goes by the 86 began to be seen as just traitorous pigs that don't deserve rights by the delusional majority of the Albas.
