A replica Fokker Dr.1 Dreidecker, G-FOKK, wearing the markings of the famous German Air Ace 'The Red Baron', displaying at The Imperial War Museum, Duxford for the 2023 Flying Finale Airshow.
This is a full scale replica of the famous Fokker DR.1 Dreidecker (Triplane) 477/17, regularly flown by Baron Manfred von Richthofen (The Red Baron) during the final period leading up to his death. Although ‘477/17’ was his usual machine, he was flying ‘425/17’ on the flight during which he was shot down and killed on 21st April 1918. This replica was scratch built, using plans produced by Ron Sands, by Paul and Sarah Ford.
Years of painstaking research went into getting everything, including the colour, as accurate as possible.
The aircraft had its maiden test flight at Sywell Airfield on 26 April 2008, almost 5 years after construction began, following 3,500 hours of work and at a cost of £50,000. None of the 320 original Fokker Dr.1's have survived.
This aircraft is powered by a Lycoming HIO-360-B1B engine.
The aircraft serial number is PFA 238-14253.

This looks to be flying very well! I wonder if the undercarriage wing contributes anything the the trim of the aeroplane, with so much wing area, it would not appear to be necessary.I had always thought the "red Barons" paint colour was more red than maroon, is his other DR1 a brighter colour red? Im not sure about the accuracy of the colour in comparison to others. It's always difficult to tell from film and photos as the digital cameras tend to subtly alter the real life colours that the eye sees. In addition, as none of the Red Barons aircraft remain, I think that the colours may be based upon a surviving fragment of fabric cut from the Red Barons crashed aircraft after he was shot down and killed.

@@HighFlight The problem is that we are lured into thinking of it as bright pillar box red, but with no colour standard to compare it could have been any colour red, I suppose there must be an authentic colour fragment from the original wreck. Stay safe! Chris B.

@@453421abcdefg12345 A quick look at 'Google' confirms that there is an original piece of fabric cut from his plane and held by the Australian War Memorial collection - here's a link which gives detail and a picture - www.awm.gov.au/collection/C270770?image=1 Steve.

@@HighFlight That is excellent quick research Steve! They do admit that the colour is probably very oxidised from the original shade of red, but reds tend to turn lighter, so it was probably as dark as the example you videoed, interesting this colour problem, as I say we are very influenced by media coverage on these things, I had to colour match my Jeep when I re built it, and the colour I had mixed was from a sample I found up under the bulkhead where no sun had reached, but of course there was no absolute colour match back then, so long as it was sort of right.
