Replica of historic war ship Hermione docks in New York

America's Revolutionary War was raging 235 years ago when Marquis de Lafayette sailed from France aboard the Navy frigate Hermione to deliver good news to his friend George Washington. On this Independence Day, a replica of the famous ship is in New York City as part of the Fourth of July celebrations. David Begnaud reports.

Wealthiest and most well connected teenagers in France decides at 19 he is going to fight for Washington although they did not want him and King Louis forbade him. So he bought his own boat and after the French navy came after him he parked in Spain and rode back to France then dressed as a woman and rode back to his ship. When he got here he fought for free and in his first battle was wounded and still stayed to order an orderly retreat. He fed and clothed soldiers with his own money and while injured returned to France (where he was now a celeb) and secured Frances support .

it only cost 30 million to build it too. including creating the tools and fixtures and relearning all the lost arts and skills necessary. Shockingly cheap, cheap enough some low level multimillionaires could commission one and raise a crew. I would if i had the means.

the hermione is preparing for its new cruise which will take place in 2022 in northern europe. currently, you can see it in dry dock in the port of la rochelle in france and from june in the port of rochefort where you can visit it

At the moment, the frigate Hermione is back in the Arsenal des Mers, Rochefort, her home port, waiting for its next adventure! She will visit four northern European countries with four stopovers which will be all opportunities to showcase French know-how: London, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Hamburg. This trip to Europe will coincide with the French presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2022

Lafayette has embrassed the tricolore on his hat during the revolution, he was even chief of the "garde nationale" of paris during the first years of the Revolution. He was part of the Terror himself, as he ordered the firing on the poor people around the first anniversary of the "fête de la féderation", the 12 juillet 1791...

But, on the flip side, this ship's sister, La Concorde, was a Dutch-style French slaver captured by Blackbeard himself & had more cannon's added...then renamed, " Queen Anne's Revenge"! "La Concorde", Hermione's sister ship, was built in April 1777 in Rochefort, France ; she was the first of its own, reason why, her name is the name of the class (Concorde-class frigate). A military class frigate, so this class was warships, not slave ships... The ship "La Concorde", used by Blackbeard, was also built in France but in 1710. She was from an older class of frigate ships (and not a state military class). She was captured by Blackbeard in 1717.

Who were you fighting in the French and Indian wars prior to the war of independence ,hmmm the French . who fought the French and Indians then the British army the redcoats with Americans .And if the French helped you it was largely as part of a geopolitical match they had with England, after the uk conquered French Canada . .Lafayette wanted Washington to invade Canada which you later tried declaring war on the uk in 1812 ,this is how the redcoats burned down your white house in retaliation for America burning down York Ontario, the invasion was unsuccessful

The flag comes from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. But historically it's much bigger! The size of the flag is defined by the proportions of the ship. A 74-gun therefore has a larger flag. Here it's too small.
