Matt from Demolition Ranch recently made a video testing to see if medieval armor could stop a bullet, but is he actually testing REAL medieval armor?

I always like it when KZbinrs I enjoy mention other KZbinrs I enjoy. And I do enjoy Modern History TV! Your content feels like the closest thing to meeting a genuine medieval knight that I'll ever experience. That's partly because you actually do a lot of the things you talk about, like training Talos and Warlord to handle the clattering of armor, but also because you tackle a lot of the more day-to-day aspects of the period and not just the big, exciting stuff like combat and architecture. I never thought I'd enjoy watching someone cook and eat medieval food from peasant to king, nor did I think I'd be quite so tempted to try the peasant food, but here we are. Not trying to down other content creators; just commending you.

knights during siege of cividale del friuli around 1331 also has been reported to used firearms (both hand-held and artillery): "The first recorded use of gunpowder weapons in Europe was in 1331 when two mounted German knights attacked Cividale del Friuli with gunpowder weapons of some sort." "In the 1331 siege of Cividale, German knights used guns which were probably very similar to Milemete weapons."
@backonlazer791
@backonlazer791 3 жыл бұрын
You might actually be able to parry a bullet, although it's highly unlikely. If you manage to catch it on the flat of the blade and redirect it, or use a metal shield (yes they were rare, but there were some) and do the same. I don't think there's anyone stupid enough to try, though. In any case, parrying is more likely than splitting the bullet in half with a sword (with the bullet coming straight at you) and not getting hit.

@@ThrottleKitty Yes, I have seen it, which is why I said head on since he did it from the side. It's very different than if someone were to try and shoot you for real.

If my memory serves, there were also attempts to 'bulletproof' knights by wearing a breastplate over a cuirass. The breastplate had the design to help deflect it and absorb most of the impact, along with the cuirass as a backup for any shots that got through to stop any left over penetrative power. Mind you, this only worked for frontal shots to the chest and was very successful if the wearer could withstand the extra weight. Modern high power firearms will probably still treat it like paper, but things like birdshot or other low calibre rounds will struggle to pull off anything other than a dent, due to a second layer to stop it.

@@nubreed13 it doesn't just look cheap, it looks absolutely nothing like actual armour, you can tell when armour is proper because it looks sturdy and has thickness. not much of a guy for medieval shit, but since this got recommended to me, im now curious. what type/caliber of handgun slug would be most effective at punching through medieval armor? unlike modern soft armor, i dont think speed would be a major factor in dealing with armor, but, also unlike modern hardened armor (plates and such) , i dont know if a heavy, relatively slow slug would be effective either. a middle ground would be ideal, yah? something along the lines of .45 ACP or .357 Sig, with either sigs v-crown or a jacketed slug. i could be very wrong, though, as i am just a gun nut staring at something shiny :p

If I shoot something that's been manufactured however, all I'm gonna get from breaking it down is the absolute, rawest materials and parts from something worth more than the sum of its parts. I think the best thing to compare medieval guns and armour to is modern guns and armor. Especially if you are talking to a gun youtuber. Modern guns have a large variety in power, from .22 to .50 BMG, and modern ballistic armor also has variety, from lightweight or clear plastic and composite armors, to ceramic with III+ and IV level protection.
@Michael_MW
@Michael_MW 3 жыл бұрын
Shad I am a bit of an armor and gun enthusiast. Modern rifles also have increased power due to increased barrel length. The barrel actually tapers slightly, so you can’t quite fit the round in the end of the barrel. This causes the round to build up pressure as it moves down the barrel, and greatly increases the speed and distance of the round. Plus the longer rifling increases accuracy. So handgun rounds are less accurate/fast due to the smaller barrels, and also due to the fact that it’s harder to steady or “support” a handgun to eliminate sway. So the velocity of a rifle round can be bananas, but just like the armor there are many different rounds and different guns. There are hollow point rounds which have drastically less armor piercing capability, but are more devastating to flesh. So even certain rifles firing hollow points may not make it through certain armors! And as for handguns, you’d be surprised how easy it is to stop many handgun rounds. As a rule they’re big, fat, and slow. And it’s more common to see hollow points fired from handguns than it is from rifles. When a lead round is stopped by a steel surface it has a “splash” effect called spalling, which essentially turns it into a mini fragmentation explosion. This could really damage the face of whoever is wearing the armor. So there’s another wild variable. Modern body armor comes in all shapes and sizes, but still used today are AR500 steel plates with protective coatings on them to mitigate spalling. They’re still effective despite being much heavier than modern armor, especially since they’re a fraction of the price. I am a bit of an armor enthusiast, own various armors myself. Fought in the ACL, fired guns my whole life, work at a company where we manufacture AR500 steel shooting targets, and I even own my own AR500 armored plates. Just some interesting tid bits to throw into your sea of grey area knowledge on this topic! Cheers man.

Well Spaniards did use a Guns vs Heavy Cavalry thing pretty well in the Battle of Biccoca against the French. Obviously positioning had a lot more to do than the fact they heavily used firearms (the post 100 years war French also made heavy use of them, for an early renaissance army, let alone their Venetian allies) but still. Hell, plate was still used in WW1 to some degree.

@@TheBayzent World War I was also the last use of the ballista and chainmail in combat. Some of the Ottomon Empire units were very behind on modernization. I wish I was joking, but I am not. These units did use modern-for-the-era rifles however. So it must have been quite a sight.

@@wolfehoffmann2697 unfortunately a lot of units in different army's where "behind the times" during the first world war. It's hard to realise it, but the first world war had some the largest leaps in military warfare that haven't been seen since. Like just imagine 10-15 years ago you're using Calvary and then fast forward to world war 1 and you now have to worry about trench warfare, fighter planes, machine guns, tanks, submarines etc. All within a short number of years. That's a massive leap in military technology and mitary tactics hadn't caught up to that leap.

There is a documentary called "Secrets of the Knights in Shinning Armor". That armor was a really good looking armor and was made for resisting gunfire, it's also my favorite armor, add that to the brigendine, and the resulting armor is what I would wear.

Great video! I learned something new about medieval armor, although I thought I know quite a lot. About the modern kevlar armor - It is not light either, but what is absolutely amazing are bomb suits, although you would not want to travel more than 500m wearing those, even if they make you a tank basically. I wonder when they will make and use exoskeleton bulletproof suits, an Iron Man essentially, but they would be bulky as Hulk probably.
