Glad you did a repot today as my orchid club is having a repotting meeting tomorrow. It will be interesting to see how different vary medium etc. Most members grow in their homes.

It's important that the same water doesn't stay in pots too long as it gets stale. Even orchids that like to stay moist are better off drying quite quickly and getting fresh water more often.

I am sure you will disagree with my method, but I put my yellow miltoniopsis hybrid in semi hydro in early spring because she wasn’t thriving in organic media. I am happy to report many new shoots and two flower spikes right now. It’s a good day when your fussy one has buds!

Miltonia/Miltoniopsis ???
@oldnordy26657 ай бұрын
Good review. I understand your focus on heat vs. no heat - but I don't think that's it for most orchid growers. Where I live (SF Bay Area), inside *night time* temperatures are cold to cool (10C to 15C), but daytime temperatures are around 15C to 18C. My Miltonia and Miltoniopsis suffer the same problem of sitting in soil way too moist long after having been bought. But here, the prevalent commercial (wrong) mixture is old sphagnum moss and very small orchid bark. I have had much better experience with only about 50% of *very slowly decomposing* organic material (such as high quality "cocoa peat" and 50% inorganic soil such as volcanic rock and some perlite). Also, the pots they come in are like yours: no holes at the sides. I immediately replant mines in those decorative ceramic orchid pots that are very open on the sides. YMMV.

The zygo mix I use has a lot of coco husk in it and it needs replacing a lot faster then just bark. I think having a bag of the stuff and gently mix it in with bark is a much better way of using it then premix
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai2 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to adjust my media mixes to cater for the cooler temps. No more coco-husk and very easy on the Welsh moss. Pots are just not drying out which means the water in them is stale.

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I did a bit of watering yesterday for the first time in almost (if not) two weeks and half didn't need any water or just a drip.

I'm hardly watering at all at the moment - with day temps maxing at 18C, everything has just stopped growing (or is doing it VERY slowly).

I've just started watching and heard you say you're not sure if your last species is going to survive. They seem to like the damp cool Welsh conditions so don't let it go like the others. If you're at all worried send it and I'll return it when it picks up 🤷♀️
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai2 жыл бұрын
The others just started to rot - media staying wet too long - the change of environment also needs a re-think on media.
@galecunningham12502 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the root detail it is so helpful. I have been reluctant to grow miltonia due to low humidity but reconsidering as I have increased my humidity to 55% though temps range 72-77 24/7. Too warm? Oncidiums happy! I don't use the cocoa husk, just S. moss, bark, perlite y charcoal y K-lite. What are my chances of success?

I hope your Miltoniopsis has been caught in time. I’ve had a Herrealexandre growing well for 3 years now, but I got my first taste of trouble recently when I spotted some rot at the base of one of the new pseudo bulbs that was blooming. I’m hoping removing it has stopped it from spreading to the rest of the plant…There’s been a lot of moss growing wild on top of the (tree fern) media and I think it’s been trapping too much damp at the base of the plant. So, I’ve removed the bracts and the moss that has been growing and fingers crossed it will be ok now. Sweet Elvis and Mojo - my cat is only 5, but he changes his favourite sleeping places all the time. And on rainy days, he will stay in one cosy place for 7 hours easily!
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai2 жыл бұрын
My problem is the change in environment needs a change in media. Pots that stay wet too long turn the water stale - almost as bad as media 'going off'. So, I need media that dries much quicker even though it will mean watering more often.
@duma2272 жыл бұрын
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Miltoniopsis are clearly not the most forgiving and obviously your new environment has thrown a bit of a curve ball. Hopefully the new media will save it.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai2 жыл бұрын
I will adjust the media I use to suit cooler temps - much more free-draining and needs to dry quicker.
