Join me as I repot this NOID phalaenopsis orchid I got as a gift from my grandma :) . No idea what the flowers looks like, but there's something quite fun about growing orchids that haven't bloomed in your care yet - it's a nice challenge and I love the surprise!
In this video I'll explain why I like to repot these orchids soon after I acquire them, and go into a little detail about my medium.
Hope you enjoy! Orchie Dee xxx

Hi All 👋. Thanks all for stopping by and all your positive and constructive feedback for this video. This is a very early video in my KZbin and is largely targeted to beginners. It focuses a lot on roots and transitioning. I realize the editing is not fantastic and there are some pauses and repetition. I promise with each video over the years I’ve assumed to improve my content. If you decide to stick around please check the description for more recent phalaenopsis repotting videos.

Orchie Dee, thank you for a very informative video! I’ve always loved orchids but lost many of them due to a busy lifestyle. I’ve now decided to start make this my hobby and purchased my first two Phalaenopsis. While there are many videos available, not many were from Australia, so it is great to see materials which can be purchased here (I’m from Sydney). Excellent potting demonstration. I appreciate your explaining the special consideration about the previous media determining the new media and why. I agree with you about that. The seating of the phal n the pot is the most important part of your tutorial. Novice orchid caretakers often find that as the most difficult task. Thank you very much.

Excellent explaining, i got a new Dendorium Orchid, it has many new orchids growing all around and was thinking it must need a new repot soon, I must get all the tools needed, thanks for this easy demonstration to follow 😁 my last phelnaopsis withered and the last leaves fell then i finally gave up🍃 but I learned alot from it.. ya see it was a gift and I decided I knew already how to take care of it that it's like any other plant, plenty of sunlight and water.. i looked up when things started looking bad and found it was too late.. the water i gave and put it outside were the 2 most mistake i ever thought possible, then i found it had root rot.. Baaaad haha like there was barely any green maybe like 5 roots left out of like 15 😅 the water i gave it damaged em all .. so i learned my lesson, study study study no matter waht plant I get .. i know they all more less differently care for now 🤣

So lovely to hear from a fellow Australian. I live in Perth & have just acquired 3 phalaenopsis orchids & have just repotted them all after doing a bit of research on the internet. However most of the podcasts are from America & it is so lovely to hear from a fellow Australian. As these are my first orchids I will probably kill all three with too much care. 😱 It’s very difficult to find a choice of orchids even for the color at the moment I have found & the only place I have been able to get them from is the Bunnings outlet. I guess this has a lot to do with the borders being closed but would love to find some different varieties , as well as the soft clear plastic pots like you are using. Have you ever tried water culture with orchids, there seems to be a lot of people doing it & enjoying it with success. Cheers 😘❤️🥰😊💕

I got curious after you mentioned this in a recent video, and came back to revisit this. I still think it's great. After trying YT, I fully appreciate how hard it is and how long it takes to make a video, and I want to thank you for taking the time to try and help people. The whole filming and editing process is so time consuming, any video you make is appreciated 🙂 I'm really happy for you at how successful this video has been, look at those views! Maybe ideally it would be a newer video, only from understanding your points about older videos myself, not because there is anything wrong with this at all! Anyway, I'm rambling, because some of the negative comments make me sad, love your videos 💗

Dee, nice video. We are professional growers in Mexico and have been in business for 34yrs. For the life of me I can't figure out why some growers pot their plants in sphagnum so tight other that transportation reasons to keep them moist during transportation. Most people don't re-pot and the roots rot. We re-pot a different stages of growth due to the size of the plant so they won't fall over as the plants get taller and produce tall spikes. This also protects the spikes from breakage. We always sanitize our media before usage. I like what you touched on about where you live. All areas wheather it the U.S, Australia, Europe or Mexico have different climate structure there fore have different temperature and humidity values. Also, heard you mention Superthrive fertilizer. We buy it in commercial size. It's all we use. We currently have about 250,000 plants in inventory and 1300 in our personal collection. Great video. Best of luck

Amazing! Thanks for the comment. This was one of my first videos, and I grow in a shade house now. I pot in orchiata, perlite and charcoal only now if I can. It's so much easier than dealing with sphagnum!
@larrymwilson
@larrymwilson 2 жыл бұрын
@@OrchieDee you know honestly I would use a good clean medium density mulch. The reason being is that it provides good drainage and it's easier to see the root growth which is one of the most important steps to follow. If the roots are green and healthy no problem however if they start to turn gray or brown you'll be able to see that as well. We currently have approximately 75-80 thousand new plants and a total inventory of approximately 260,000 plants that's all we have ever used and have had excellent results. Good luck.

I have just been given about 8 Phalaenopsis orchids but they had mealybugs on them. I have sprayed them with Insecticidal soap, but the bugs have come back. Now thanks to watching your video I will repot them and spray them with the Peroxide and new mix and hopefully, that will do the trick. However, on the bright side 3 of them have produced flower stems and are blooming happily, in spite of the mealy bugs. Great info TFS

Wow, this is a great video, thank you!! I have killed ok many phals trying to repot like other people say you need to- straight into bark, or in moss packed very loosely. Your point to consider what the roots are used to makes so much sense, and is the conclusion I have come to as well. My current set up is full moss, packed less tightly than how they come, but not too loose, so the roots feel supported, and so far so good.

Thank you for having this video, I've had orchids a few years without repotting yet.... I know I'm a bad orchid mum... but now I feel more confident! May I ask the sterile stuff, are they susceptible to bacteria? Is the peroxide neet or mixed in h20? Why don't you soak the bark first?
@OrchieDee
@OrchieDee 4 жыл бұрын
No, I've had very few bacterial infections with phals. Only really in situations of high humidity and poor airflow. Rarely with Phalaenopsis. I use 3% hydrogen peroxide. And I don't soak the bark first because it's impossible to work with wet... :) . Hope this helps!

Joan Anderson you don’t have to! .. I just wanted the plant not to sit too high as I want new roots to hit the medium sooner. I knew the roots were going to be a little buried if I planted it at the level I wanted. It depends on your plant and choice. Over time your roots will emerge from higher on the stem and if you have lots of healthy Leaves your plant won’t miss a couple small old ones :)

I saved two from my yoga studio. Mine look exactly like this after ive repotted them for a few months now. When do they start the blooms or is there something else i can do?! They just have green leaves like this.

Hello Dee, thanks for this interesting video, can you confirm that putting aerial roots in the pot when repotting an orchid is likely to kill the root or will it kill the plant ? I have to repot some cattleyas that have several aerial roots and I would have liked to bury those roots in the bark medium. Not a good idea ?? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Sheila Oniu hey if you check out the description box of this video I do have some more suggested videos. There is a more in-depth repotting video plus a beginner video, with tips on lighting etc :). The little root hanging over is an aerial root. In nature these guys usually grow on trees and their roots are able to grow in the air as well, absorbing moisture from humid environments

Lovely video. But I would like to know what the watering schedule should be in different temperature and climates. IS it wise to put spagnum moss at the top to help to keep moisture in the plant?

I have a watering video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaeoiGaafaqehZY . I have other phalaenopsis videos which explain when to water. Essential phalaenopsis can be watered when just dry. In winter it will take longer between waterings. In summer my technique has changed in that I water my plants with a pump sprayer, directly into the pot in situ (I have all my plants now in their own decorative containers) - mainly to keep up with their watering needs in my very hot summers. I personally don't keep sphagnum as a top layer unless I have roots developing quite high and I find they are drying out - then a little sphagnum kept moist can encourage humidity and root growth. It can develop quite a bit of algae over time though.

Thanks for the great videos! I live in south Florida and they really thrive here. I usually just stick them on a large tree and they are very happy. How often should I repot my indoor orchids?Unfortunately I usually just let them live inside the house for about 3 years and then they die.Cheers!

I bet the orchids love tot tropical south Florida climate!! It depends what medium you use and the type of orchid. But a golden rule for organic media would be to repot every two years or if an orchid outgrows it’s pot :)

Hi there, TY for the video. Very informative. My question is: Why did you leave that one root out? I have 3 roots out like you had the one. What is your advice on that??
@OrchieDee
@OrchieDee 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the aerial roots can be quite stiff and even if you soak, they still tend to break if you bend them too far. So I just left that one out. Some people advise keeping aerial roots out of the pot because they are 'used to' air and don't adapt well when potted. I don't tend to find this if you have fairly airy media.

hello, I started growing orchids very recently and I love watching your videos, it helps a lot when you have questions, and learn how to take care of my orchids in the best way, I have some doubts regarding the use of Hydrogen Peroxide that I would like to ask if it's not too trouble, when you say you use a solution of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide you basically use it directly from the packaging right? is that the Hydrogen Peroxide that I bought indicates that it is 3% ppl, and the second question is whether I can use Hydrogen Peroxide also in the other orchids or it's only to use in the Phalaenopsis?

Hi Luis, yes, I buy pre-diluted 3% H2O2 and use that solution neat. You can use it on any plant! It works as a mild disinfectant via an oxidative reaction. It’s made for human use so actually very safe for plants, non toxic to pets. After it hits a surface, it will undergo a reaction and reduce to water and oxygen. On live matter it will create that fizz during the reaction which helps to kill bacteria, fungus, some pests like measly bugs etc. Just take care not to let the resulting water pool afterwards, put in good air flow after using.
