Very interesting to know the history behind a plant. That is one heirloom plant. 😃 I like terracotta pots! 😛😉 I know, it’s all about preference. Plastic just won’t work in my very hot environment, they melt or they become brittle after just one year. But you are correct that it makes the soil dry out very fast. 🙂 Hope you get your Lobivia to flower so you can properly ID it. Tell your dad to “help” make it flower. 🥰

Thank you so much, Ana 😊 Yeah it’s all about personal preference at the end of the day, I just find plastic pots more convenient as well and the square ones are good space savers, too. Hopefully it’ll flower soon, not sure it will this year but it might be that it needs a cooler winter rest. Thank you for watching and commenting as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and rest of the weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜☕️

I use both 😊Terracotta weighs more so helps prevent the plant from tipping over and as Ana mentions is much better at protecting the roots in our hot climates. I tend to use regular potting soil with terracotta since it dries out faster and I add mineral to soil when I plant in plastic pots. I have totally searched online for "square Terracotta pots" but unfortunately there is not very much out there 😭
@Cactimania2 жыл бұрын
@@CACTASTIC Yeah square terracotta pots are not easy things to obtain here either. When they do turn up for sale they’re usually huge ones and quite expensive 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

Beautiful plant and very special being from your dad's collection 😊💯💚! Not sure about the id, for me it resembles some chamaelobivia hybrids that I've seen but it can be lobivia or echinopsis as you say. Hope it flowers for you soon🙏🍀🌺🌵☀️! About the pots, in my climate, I prefer terracotta due to my high humidity in the air and hot summer (terracota acts as an insulation of the roots and refrigerates the plants when sprayed with water and evaporate)… in fact I use to protect my smaller cacti in summer, putting the plastic pots inside a terracota pot. What works for one could not be good for others... But I use plastic for the plants that I grow indoors and the seedlings that I grow protected from sun and heat, or they will die for sure. Have a great week friends!💞
@Cactimania2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Vanesa 😊 I was actually thinking it could possibly be a hybrid, will make getting a positive ID on a little more difficult if it is. Yeah I think if I lived in a hotter climate I probably would choose terracotta pots over plastic. I still love the fancy ceramic pots, though. Might have some nice ones of those coming soon 😁 And I do like bonsai pots as well. Thank you for watching and commenting as always, Vanesa. Im very happy that you put time to read and respond to the comments! If you dont mind here is mine story from today: I was "repotting" my cacti, a bit late but had to do it since I was putting it off due to life and was fighting the entire sunday with the super rootbound peatmoss rootball hell, I was so jealous 😄 looking how easy it was for you with propper mix but definitelly learnt my lesson about repotting them straight away when I buy one. Now they will dry for few days since I had to blast the stuff with water as it wouldnt come off dry and Im sure the roots are very sad but I hope they will recover. (maybe I went a bit too extreme but if the plants recover well they will have really clean rootball for the rest of their life) I also will be experimenting with wicking system (basically a cotton rope with quite tight spirall covering the bottom). Altrought now it might need to wait to be useful once the plants recover they go crazy when I feed them hydroponic nutrients and it could allow me to grow them a bit on the extreme side. I hope that with propper height adjustment I will basically be able to keep the mix at perfect moisture level where the plants would be able to drink water for longer amounts of time without having to go through drying cycles. It can also act the other way, where I can water them normal way but drain all the excess that would pool at the bottom due to capillary actions and surface tension preventing it from escaping the drain holes through that wick. so yeah
@edithcoliagrandis2 жыл бұрын
@@digitalwojtya3669 your surname reminds me of Saint John Paul II’s real name. 🙂 After reading your story, i am a bit apprehensive about the wicking system as cacti are such hungry plants for moisture that they will take so much water when it’s present. They have a very slow metabolism and the chances of rot is high if moisture level is high around their roots. Quite risky but it’s good to try and learn new things. 👍🏼
@digitalwojtya36692 жыл бұрын
@@edithcoliagrandis last year I was feeding them hydroponic nutrients (ghe tripart) and they were growing very fast (also they were in this peatmoss medium so I could literally take them out of the pot without disturbing roots or anything and see the rootball), I noticed that they wouldn't mind having the soil slightly damp for longer but would hate when it was too wet for shorter (if this makes sense) One of mine ferroactus was growing spines accordingly to water and nutrients and soil drying up too soon resulted in spines that were too short. Also I needed to water them too many times for my lazy 3 letters and had to water them with nutrients since they immediately were growing worse compared to previous growth. So yeah I hope that the wick system next year when they colonise pot with roots will make my life easier and for this year it can act as water excess sponge And on topic of getting rid of water from overwatered plants (if this happens) its really the best and only way to get rid of excess water as you can just place the pot with the wick on a towel, overtime the capillary actions will equalise the moisture and surface area of the towel will speed up evaporation. (I was doing that few times when the plants were in this terrible peatmoss medium and I literally could take them out of the pot and place on paper towel in one chunk, with new mix it will be impossible without the wick as it will be waaay to lose and the trapped excess of water wont go through drainage holes due to surface tension) in short the wick gives me ton of flexibility with watering (both ways) and I can be more reckless when I do it.

In going through some of your past videos (I find them all great!), Daz, I came across this very nice one that I also wanted to comment on, as I love your background story and history to this plant! I find it wonderful when one has such a personal association and story linked to individual plants, like this one from your Dad, that is indeed VERY, VERY special!! Thanks so much for sharing. On a more secondary and unrelated topic, at 1:20 you are pondering the slightly longer spines on the photo of the original mother plant, and it got me thinking whether the reason might be linked to the location that the plants are growing at? I have found that, especially on many of my Echinopsis, if they are grown outside throughout the summer, in full, direct sunlight (and thereby also getting the full exposure also to cooler weather periods) they always develop much stronger, thicker and longer spines than when I grow the very same ones inside my greenhouse, or indoors on the windowsill. Perhaps not relevant in this case, but just got me thinking and wanted to share with you nevertheless. Best wishes, you and Edith have a great weekend ahead, happy growing!! 👍🌵🌵☀️🌸🌸

Thank you so much, Joe 😊 Yes someone else also mentioned that. The greenhouse it’s in now gets more sun than my dad’s greenhouse did, especially now since we had a tree removed that stole all the afternoon sunlight. His greenhouse was glass though, mine is polycarbonate. He did leave them out all winter with zero heating, whereas I have been bringing this one indoors for the winter. The offsets overwintered fine in the greenhouse so I might be brave and leave this out, too. Thank you for watching and commenting my friend. Thank you so much, Molly 😊 It’s really down to the type of mix you use. As mine is 75 to 85% mineral, that combined with a clay pot just drys out too quickly for my liking. Interesting with the terra cotta pots, i only use terra cotta now, even though i hate how they look.., i have used plastic before, but i find they get burning hot in summer. Also i did a test with watering 2 pots, one terra cotta one plastic, and the terra cotta was dry one week later, the plastic was still wet, Both were 100% mineral soil. It was plants with big taproots though, so maybe that is why the plastic didn't dry out. Best regards :)
