In this episode, I take a closer look at my lophophora williamsii (peyote cactus) before its winter dormancy. Is that rot where the body is yellowed?

WOW your Loph looks AWESOME potted up with the staging and the soil mix you have used is fantastic for these Lophs, I notice quite a few of mine go yellow at the lower base due to the lack of chlorophyll because of the soil covering them and thankfully its completely harmless, thanks so much for sharing the wonderful potting up and staging, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful afternoon XXXX

I got it from the BCSS National Show in 2022 but the nursery was Southfields Nurseries. Really reasonable prices. 👍

It turned out quite nice. 👍 Lophophoras (and many/most of the other cacti genera for that matter) grow best in mineral substrates. If you can find it where you live, I would recomend using porous materials of volcanic origin (pumice, zeolite, lava/scoria) as a base, rather than horticultural grit. It is also nice to add some clay material to the mixture (akadama is the best, but you can also use sintered clay products like crushed brics or clay pots. Also, there is a very good product named "Seramis" which is generally available in Europe.). Best regards, Nino

Thank you, I'll look into those and do a full repot of things next year to improve the mixture. 😎👍

No this is perfectly normal, I've had them like that as a seedling in bone dry soil that wasn't watered at all, so no not rot in any way whatsoever, I've heard it can be to do with the alkaloids in the cacti, also probably partly to do with that part getting little to no light

Agree with this. My plant seems fine and the discolouring seems to be uniform beneath the level of the substrate.

Beauties. Always afraid of losing my Lophs. A few succumbed to a fungal infection.

generally ive found the rot is obvious as the green skin becomes rather delicate... if it sloughs off easily... shes a gonner. meh, twenty five years and mine got the rot. three years of perpetual rain and a failed ants nest in the middle of it all. i suspect the queen got trapped/crushed, and that was the source of the rot actually. cus its been damp enough over the years to have a decent clump of moss on one side, lol. got one of the strains that throws lots and lots of pups. wish i had tried propagating a few years ago. now i know how it grows inside, under the buttons... expected just a large body with offshoots, was more like a forest with a canopy. annoying, had eight heads flowering, was looking forward to another five or so when the surgery started... saved most of it though, tore it apart, hacked as much of the red/yellow scunge out, (pretty obvious scion staining... if its red or yellow? its doomed!) dunked in a mix of fongarid and the other one... bordeaux powder? left sitting around for six months, started getting little rootlets from the humidity alone, the largest sections have all rooted down fine, and a year later i finally potted a few of the little bits and pieces i forgot about... 50:50. some just turned to slime, some have popped out green bits and are obviously doing something. should give them another dose of the fungicides again, methinks. just in case. but, its the beginning of autumn so ill probably leave them in the fish tank to dry out (wtf? oxymoron!) and wait til next year...

What does staging mean?

Staging is when you consider the combination of plant, pot and top dressing to create something that looks pleasing on the eye.

Bad staging: Covering the top of the mix with bright red and yellow aquarium pebbles. Good staging: Covering the mix with BROKEN ROCK from the exact area where the plant grows normally, so that a shot of your pot looks like a shot of the plant growing IN SITU, on the site where it normally grows.
