Thanks for the incredibly informative videos; they’re very concise and too the point, super refreshing! What potting mix did you use for this? I’m aware it depends on micro climate, pot type, plant type etc. and that these are moisture loving plants, but I’m finding really opposing information online and that some people in climates like ours (cold and humid) are actually finding much better results in aroid mixes! Would love to know what you’d recommend

Thanks. I use a simple mix of 5 parts compost 2 parts perlite for pretty much all my non-succulent plants

I have a rootbound calathea (same type as this one). I would like to divide it because I want to keep it in its current container. Could I cut it in half vertically and also cut off part of the roots from the bottom? Otherwise it won’t have any fresh soil and room at the bottom…. Hope to hear from you!

@NatalieAnne12072 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video! If the root-bound ness has resulted in a little footy/wooden mound at the heart of where the stems grow from, can I save it, or is it ruined? I have loosened the bottom roots and repotted it, but was worried to unsettle the top bit where the leaves come from and fish breaking up the plant. I’d appreciate a response! I also have only had mine a year and was shocked by the root growth!
@SheffieldMadePlants2 жыл бұрын
I think I'd leave the central bit alone. You've repotted it and that should be good enough. See how it gets on, it should be fine.

Great informative video! Cathaleas are challeging indeed. I found that out with my rattlesnake plant that currently has yellowish marks on the top of leaves and brown edges. I've since moved it from a South facing window to a bright northern window. Do you water plants prior to repotting? I have 2 varigated rubber plants that I wish to combine in one pot. Thx.
@SheffieldMadePlants2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I'm sure it will do well in its new spot. I don't water prior to repotting. I've found it's not necessary
@mydailyreward20902 жыл бұрын
Put a wet paper towel in the pot and cover your calathea at night with a plastic cloche. This will give it the humidity it needs and help with the browning. I do this every night as my nighttime routine and think of it as putting my plants to bed for the night

@My Daily Reward What a great tip! Thanks for that, I'll definitely give it a go.

Should I trim the roots when repotting and pruning a root bound calathea?

Yes roots can be pruned. They respond well. Don’t cut off more than a third max.

Just found out my warscewiczii was just as badly rootbound and repotted it as well. Could this have been the reason that the last 8 new leaves it's put out have been dramatically smaller than the rest?

I'm glad I found your video! I have a calathea exactly as yours but some steams are bending from the base. the leaves are fine for what I think is the amount of stems that make it bend on one side. Does this makes sense? what do you think and what do you recommend? I hope you can help me

@SheffieldMadePlants2 жыл бұрын
@@andreacardenas7231 repot if it's rootbound otherwise I'd leave it. If it's one side maybe that side isn't getting enough light? I'm sure it will perk up soon but you might need to trim some leaves.

Hi - just caught this - beautiful plant - followed it whilst repotting a root bound calathea - just wondered if the decorative pot it went into has drainage holes? He says, "I'll put this tray here to catch any debris....." and he pulls out this little cake pan 'tray'. Really? I repot something and I get dirt strewn from the kitchen to the bedroom, all originating from my living room where I repotted a 3 inch pot plant into a 6 inch plant pot AND I used a 3' x 2 foot low edged tub to do it in! Dirt is magical.... I swear it floats from one room to the other. Sigh.
