Animal lamp manufacturers should get on board with establishing a user-friendly system for helping keepers install the best combinations of lamps (to aspire to the "best of what we currently have available "). Maybe including spectral charts for the specific lamp (superimposed on the "solar spectrum") and the suggested, specific products needed to fill the gaps in the "full" spectrum (with THEIR spectral profiles). In effect, a recipe for a "full spectrum" lamp salad that represents the best possible wavelength structure at the appropriate W/cm2, etc. Like a Ferguson Zone system that all manufacturers should use (thus more easily digestible for hobbiests, and allows interchangeability of brands).

So it sounds like our options for the best UV-A is the Philips Mastercolour 942. Now it's a matter of finding a fixture that it fits!

Watched this all from beginning to end. Very, very interesting and engaging! Now I know better why I get sad (S.A.D/Seasonal Affective Disorder) because of the damn clouds and rain in Wales blocking the UVB LOL...my head nearly fell off when you critically analysed the LED spectrum in comparison to "coloured lights being bad", that is just madness! The legal stuff, hopefully they'll be a way to get keepers' lighting more eco-friendly while at the same time providing a decent dose of light radiation for our pets. Educating people too is really important, like you say. The way you described it as like a pyramid, I totally agree! "Where's the potatoes?" that bit really made me chuckle! :D Well done guys! Awesome video!! :)

@ReptilesandResearch so after watching this video, I'm worried I'm not providing sufficient UVA for my beardie boy. I'm using a Reptisun 10.0 T5 HO UVB, 1x75W Exoterra Intense Basking Spot lamp, and 1x50W Exoterra Intense Basking Spot lamp. Is this setup providing adequate UVA for fat guts?

Wonderfully informative as usual I love all this scientific side of the reptile keeping. Keep them coming I'm learning so much However this T5 ban is a bit scary may just get a couple in so I'll be ok ..I only have one Viv so not too expensive but I have a brand new set up so it's annoying but my beardie is more important so I will do what I have to .

Very informative from what I watched...didn't have 2 hours to listen to whole thing. I'm still a little uncertain about the best lighting setup. I'm in Australia so i try and get my dragon outside as much as possible but I was told a good combo is UVB tube, basking bulb and an led grow light. Is that still an adequate combo for general purposes?

Very informative. Thank you for your work there with this episode. Always Fun to read your contributions in the Lighting Group. We experienced it with the pandemic that wheres the need there's the possibility to make steps at a fast pace. But for now all you can do is wait,stock on the T5s and share the open Letter. I am positive that the LED Lamps will be the future and lets see what the one major brand is releasing tomorrow.

So, if phosphorus coatings are the key in producing uva¹&², uvb, & white(to humans) light, then why dont we make a longer diode with different cross bands of phosphorus? Increase wattage, increase heat sink abilities, make a 6W chip with a banded diode and a housing that makes it easily installed through screen or solid material. Add a fan if needed, make if water resistant. Cycle the fan back to enclosure for heat? Has any of this been attempted?
@tomaskas Жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, no it hasn't been attempted. The issue is that the phosphor coatings are difficult to refine and expensive to 'invent'. And there is no motive to do such a thing, as animal keeping is just a drop in the ocean compared to domestic lighting and plant growth. And as soon as we make the LED lamps inefficient, they fail to meet the criteria to be useful where energy consumption matters (this is in part the reason for a ban on older technology)

I've just bought 4 T5 bulbs for my beardie - hoping that that will give me enough stock until the LED tech is where it needs to be 😬

When leds lamps become mainstream... We could check them with a solar meter and see if they are dangerous right?
@tomaskas Жыл бұрын
Just like the high quality T5s we use - yes. But the Solarmeter itself should only be used on lamps that have proven through spectral analysis to be safe with no UVC etc. as the Solarmeter can’t tell you if it’s seeing UVB or UVC.
@D4ni3lS4nk3 Жыл бұрын
I see, so uv-c would be real danger of the future led lamps tech for reptiles, and us

Uggggh, there's so little Hg in T5s. No more than 20mg IIRC
@tomaskas Жыл бұрын
The UK legislation stipulates 15mg. If you check rule 3.3 here: www.gov.uk/government/publications/restriction-of-hazardous-substances-rohs-determinations-on-exemption-applications/rohs-exemption-applications-secretary-of-state-determinations Note that 3.4 does not apply because the lamps only emit up to 14% UVB, so Ultraviolet is “mainly” the output.

We will be losing halogen bulbs in America, so I have read a few times.
@tomaskas Жыл бұрын
“Special Purpose” halogen lamps are protected, so any that are designed for reptile use are allowed. In fact, this is potentially one of the reasons why they say “UVA” on the box - because this allows them to be considered as “special purpose” lamps.
