The stunning part of her answer...is that she was allowed to give it without being interrupted constantly so that she couldn't. And she was answering the question of someone who didn't WANT her to give a nuanced answer! On his own time! THAT is the stunning part.

@@virginiaoflaherty2983 He wasn't struck dumb by any of those things no matter how true they might be. It's more likely that she began her answer by directly answering his question about where the money would come from before putting in the background, rather than trying to say "it's complicated" and answering indirectly or with the background first. She was direct and her "from taxes" answer was exactly what he wanted to hear. He got his sound byte. It's that he didn't stop her from continuing that was stunning, but again, he got his sound byte, so everything after that will be clipped out by Fox et al, and ignored when he and his colleagues scream about Democrats trying to raise taxes on the poor, hardworking "real" Americans. Pinning it down to simplistic things like her virtues just objectifies people and distracts from what's really going on. I might be wrong in why he didn't interrupt her, but direct answers followed by relevant context is more plausible, and more useful for how to elicit similar reactions in the future, than "put an intelligent, professional, beautiful and eloquent women in front of him and he'll shut up," especially since he's almost certainly been faced with plenty of others who fit the bill and not been stunned into silence by their virtues.

I was surprised he didn't pull the "reclaiming my time" bullshit that so many Republicans do when they just want someone to bark at for their ignorant constituents back home. Gotta get those Facebook clicks, you know. That's FAR more important to them than say... keeping the government open? Or HELPING people that need help? Facebook clicks, the #1 most important thing to the Republican Party - ok, aside from cutting their own taxes.

@@virginiaoflaherty2983you are correct to a certain extent. What caught him was the way she framed her answer by starting in his territory by talking about the "benefits" of tax cuts for the rich. By the time he realised she had entrapped him there was no escape hatch available because everyone was suddenly interested in hearing where she was going with her argument. It is at the point when she slapped him with the "20 year uninterrupted runway" quote and argument that he realised he was f**ked.

Also, if “Real Americans” like Sen Kennedy & other wealthier citizens, would stop spending so much time trying to avoid paying their taxes, and instead - like the majority of us, pay what is asked, the Senator wouldn’t be asked to do “everything” so much… because that’s what people’s taxes are there to pay for. I mean, that's like the entire fiscal budget for Medicare and Social Security rn. If we cut defense spending and did away with those tax breaks, we could probably literally afford healthcare for everyone with no tax increase for the working class, but that's not what they want to hear. The amount of money we just hand over to people who don't need more money is sickening. If we taxed billionaires and even 100-millionaires out of existence, the things we could achieve for the average person would be damn near utopian. Nobody has more power and wealth currently than the US, so homelessness, child hunger, healthcare, and funding for education K-University shouldn't be an issue.

It's like how the British Empire operate, the Brits liked to think they 'civilized' the undeveloped world... but really, anything they did build, they build it only for their own ability to exploit colonies. If anything good came out of it that benefitted locals, it's basically because of 'leakage' they can't stop. The right likes to say even the poor in US have modern amenities, putting aside that they clearly don't count homeless people as people. Any one poor who even touch modern amenities, it would be due to leakage, not by some design. It also make them sound a bit incontinence.

@Larry Trickle down economics is the idea championed by utter fkn morons who also hold (at least the ones I've interacted with) firmly the belief - that those born into _not_ relative wealth and privilege, only have themselves to blame for lacking wealth and privilege. With that is the idea that any social safety nets and systems for universally accessible higher education, vocational training, paid parental leave, regular health checks, or community outreach programs, are imprudent government expenditures, unconnected to its economy, and properly viewed, are outside of the government's purview anyway. So, gutting that sht should be the goal. They are essentially advocating for a shitty version of feudalism, that can not work in any way in modern society. The modern day fiefs are massive corporations and their owners, from whom all the wealth will truckle. However, the modern fiefdom of a corporation and its owners aren't actually contributing to the royal coffers by paying their share taxes, as fiefdoms of old did, but they do enjoy the privileges and status of such fiefdoms. There is also the fact that almost all of them outsource their actual manufacturing processes now, rather than generating and sustaining localized economies... But that is besides the point. Trickle down economics is what truly stupid, shortsighted mega-rich dikwads push for, and is what truly stupid, shortsighted people who confuse the silver spoon of those dikwads for knowledgeable insight and earned privilege.

It’s downright tragic that after the greatest decrease in poverty overall was achieved by “big government spending” in the 1960s… we *still* have a dominant conservative opposition to doing the same for *child* poverty. There’s no excuse. They’re children. You want to put work requirements for that? I know plenty of Republicans in red states do. The worst part? It isn’t even beneficial to businesses. Their supposed “pro-business” “smart” economic reasoning falls apart when you realize that this isn’t how macroeconomics work. To put it simply, anti-poverty legislation is pro-business. But Republicans never like to acknowledge that.

And the economy was generally better, current moment aside. The tax structure during WWII placed the marginal tax at around 93%. This was continued into 1965. In that time economic growth was high and with distribution/ disparity was far mor equitable. Families could buy homes and education costs were far more reasonable. Ending the WWII tax tax structure was part of the Democratic to do list and it was accomplished. Meanwhile investment in the War in Vietnam, going to the moon, the arms race, as well as the Great Society with Medicare, Medicaid, and a crazy welfare system began to affect the deficits and debt. Add to that the oil crisis of 1973 and by 1974 the U.S. was in a stagflation situation. High marginal taxes establishes a progressive tax structure that nevertheless allows for affluence without wretched excess. But that was never enough for the rapacious and greedy uber-wealthy.

What he meant was where are we going to get the money wirhin the confines of our current tax laws. I wonder what would happen if we abolished llobying, and special interest groups, and actually made the billionaires, and big corporations pay the same taxes as everyone else. They want you to beleive that the economy would crash. It wouldn't. Quality of life would be better for everyone. Even the poorest people. Republicans will never let that happen. Unfortunately neither will Democrats.

The sad part is that during the boom years of the oil industry Louisiana had so many jobs that we were awash in people coming here to work from other states. But pandering to the oil companies and allowing foreign built oil platforms to be imported and corporate greed meant less jobs and stagnant wages. Now the state is washing away because the Republicans refuse to make the oil companies repair the damage to the marsh. Kennedy is dangerous because he is smart like a fox and pushes the country bumpkin image to disarm his opponents. But we only have ourselves to blame!

WOW! I am blown away by most of the responses in the comments here. Where in the Constitution does it say "government, federal, state or local is supposed to be responsible for taking care of, i.e. feeding, clothing, housing, insuring or babysitting THE PEOPLE"? Where does it say that?!? Where does it say that someone who has built a business from scratch and hard work with successes and failures on the way up should pay higher taxes to pay for others who DON'T want to work as hard? Where does it say that if you CHOOSE to spread your legs and get pregnant, your no longer responsible for the consequences? Tell me, WHERE does it say that if you CHOOSE to run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in student debt you are no longer responsible, don't worry about it? When are WE, individuals, responsible for the choices WE make? YES, I will admit that the costs of child daycare are expensive and the cost to feed a family is expensive. How about just stop and look around your area. Do you see people living in low income housing driving new cars? Do you see them carrying six packs or 12 packs home on a regular? If you were having problems feeding your family, would you be driving a new car and making payments? We ALL have choices! Choose wrong and SOMEONE SUFFERS!

Whilst the reality is overseas we do pay higher taxes, we also end up with higher wages due to productivity gains. Generally speaking, we have for example: 1) heavily subsidies child care so more people can work, 2) universal health care (including mental health) so people can be treated and get back to work, 3) a social security net for unemployed people so they can get back to work. 4) lots of investment in infrastructure so people don't get stuck in traffic or just die trying to get to work because of a collapsed bridge, 5) paternity and maternity leave so people can care for their babies after birth and remain employed, and 6) family benefits paid to average and lower income families to make sure they all get the essentials and keeps children in the running to succeed in life. These things actually pay for themselves, and make people happier, healthier, and more productive. The argument that everyone will be free loafers is a distraction. There inevitably there will be some, but the vast majority of people want a decent income, so they will go back to work when they can. I rarely use the universal health care system, but gladly pay into it so others will have a better life.

Look... You've got it all wrong. We've made abortion illegal to force growth of the labor pool, brought back child labor to solve the child care delimma, destroyed public education to eradicate critical thinking on the part of the masses, legislated christo-fascist dogma into every curriculum , gerrymandered in rule by minority and deregulated all the really dangerous jobs so that the working class will be completely ignorant of their plight, politically powerless, disposable and replaceable.
