"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

@@theywouldnthavetocensormei9231 That's not true. Meat prices fluctuate greatly and environmental factors heavily affect them. For example, right now boneless chicken breast in local markets here is about $4.79/lb (prices differ slightly between markets). Sirloin steaks are currently $4.39/lb. The reason for this is because the most recent bout of avian flu that made it's way through the domestic chicken population was particularly destructive. With everything else going on, it wasn't heavily covered in the media, but that is the reason chicken and egg prices have been so high as of late. I was responsible for the purchase of ingredients for a popular restaurant for years. I've seen pork out price beef, beef out price game, chicken out price lamb etc. It all depends what is going on in that particular industry at any given time.

As someone who works in a grocery store this makes literally no sense. the cost of a can of refried beans versus a can of plain beans is almost exactly the same and if you think about it technically the refried beans are a better value because the entire can is full all the way up with bean matter versus the can of plain beans which contains water that you have to drain out the same can be said for seasoned beans because then you don't also have to buy seasoning and the liquid in the can is at least like a seasoned slurry verses useless water. Also buying fresh versus canned meat can be the same way if you also account for what kind of sale that store has going on that particular day. I have literally seen an entire small chicken for sale at $0.99 a pound and its like 5ish pounds so like $4.98 for an entire chicken....OR you could get a 12.5 oz can of Swanson chicken breast for around $3.69 literally almost the same money for more food to buy a literal whole fresh chicken. I think the people who are trying to impose these restrictions just haven't set foot in a grocery store for literal decades.

Thank you Kyle, for that minimally-informative rant. A few points, 1. He brings up the “military-industrial complex” as if it’s interfering with poor people getting food stamps and thus food. Well, Kyle, hat to tell you this, but that’s federal spending. This bill affects state spending in the stat of Iowa. 2. He confidently neglects to mention that the bill also adds a million dollars to Iowa's Double Up Food Bucks program. Under this program, those buying fresh fruits and vegetable using SNAP benefits get a free matching purchase of fresh fruit and vegetables. In other words, fresh fruits and vegetables are half off for those using SNAP benefits. 3. These restrictions are the same restrictions under WIC.

1. I think he’s trying to say the federal government has more than enough money to spare to at least partially subsidize this program so that people can still have access to fresh meats given the ridiculous amount of money they give the military, which I personally think is a fair assessment but that’s just me. At least that was my takeaway 2. That’s a great program, I don’t think anyone would complain about it on its own, but as someone who has lived on SNAP benefits before, it’s very hard feeding a family with just fruits and vegetables. Meats and rice are more cost effective and more filling. I’m sure most others on snap benefits would agree they’d much rather have access to meat and rice than half off fresh fruits and veggies. Plus a million dollars wouldn’t go that far when Iowa has around 300k people on snap benefits. That’s like $4 per person. 3. I’ve never lived in Iowa so I don’t have an informed opinion on wic benefits there 😂

If, when we gave a homeless person a dollar, they gave the classical middle class response of 'actually give me more, that's not my fair share', I think the middle class would start hating them instead of merely ignoring them. Because the middle class lives in its own entitlement bubble, except it, unlike the top class, not only ignores the 3rd class but also demands the top class treat them with more dignity than they treat the 3rd. Maybe we could learn a thing or 2 from homless people, maybe if we were more charismatic like the 3rd class and realized they have more to complain about then us, the 1st class would hate us less. 'GIVE US 15$ MINIMUM WAGE!' How much do you think the homeless or say pr ost itutes get paid pal, do you think they get paid minimum wage doing the illegal job of exercising 'my body my choice', do you see them complaining?

It’s a political taboo in Canada for politicians to lecture the public or recipients of government benefits what they can’t spend their money on or to claim that they waste money on cigarettes and beer…etc.

I think Kyle has an incomplete explanation of how snap is supposed to work, particularly in red states. When we explain it to those trying to sign up we like to think of it as a tool to build savings. A lot of people on snap aren’t people you’d view as poor (comparatively) but people who would struggle to save any significant amount of money otherwise.

I LOVE it how these folks are always preoccupied with scrutinizing the poor. 🤣

How cruel and spiteful. SNAP recipients aren’t lazy and living the sweet life. Seniors and the disabled also depend on SNAP.
