I’d spend 10 times as much buying tools than just buying a later model server to do this!

omg, this is exactly my situation and my frustration after swapping all Fans with Noctua ones and yes I gave up... will continue to watch the video with the hope to make use of my server

Because he thinks he is so hilarious using tools incorrectly. It shows contempt for his audience.

Good ideas, def tough to quiet down these dells sometimes. I've got an r520, r420 and r320 I got from work still in storage but as the 420 has a dead idrac and the board is toast I may try and repurpose the chassis and backplane. I did a custom build out of a 4U intel chassis from 2013 to support an atx psu, 3x 120s and atx mobo. Flashed H710 to hba. Still deciding what role that'll play in my lab. In the next few weeks I'm hopefully getting some other servers, mainly ones with Xeon scalable or there newer E5 xeons. Excluding a Xeon 2144G system running truenas I've still got an dual E5-2667v2 I'd like up upgrade from at some point.

What are the gray wires on the backplane power conector for?

I'm honestly not sure. I didn't get a voltage on them and after I booted it up without them, I stopped probing.

great informative video .. planning on repurposing my old tower server, got a few tips from this video. Also as a side note - it is my moral duty as a concerned citizen of a non-moon landing country ( timestamp 2:31 ) to point out the fact that "Contrary to urban myth, NASA did use the metric system for the Apollo Moon landings. SI units were used for arguably the most critical part of the missions - the calculations that were carried out by the Lunar Module’s onboard Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) during the computer-controlled phases of the spacecraft’s descent to the surface of the Moon, and for the journey of the Ascent stage of the craft during its return to lunar orbit, where it would rendezvous with the Command and Service Module (CSM)."
