There are three "reasons" why people cheat, Cowardice: too much of a pussy to break up with your partner when you don't have feelings for them and just start dating while still in a relationship. Narcissism: the obvious, the evil, the just not giving a crap about anyone but themselves. probably a toxic relationship as it is. Mental Illness: it's more difficult in this situation because it IS entirely possible that they do still love you, but their metal illness makes them make bad decisions in the name of "feeling happy". Just like drugs, it's self destructive and not entirely their fault because they are not in control. But that absolutely doesn't excuse cheating, and absolutely doesn't mean you have to stay with them. You wouldn't date a druggy, so you don't date someone who can't control their own actions because of their own metal problems. Even if they might hurt themselves for it. Other people are not your responsibility.

Narcissism and mental illness are similar since narcissism is a mental illness but very different for what I'm referring to. Victims in abusive relationships may cheat on their abusive partner and still be in a relationship with them, which would fall under mental illness AND cowardice to leave their partner (which wouldn't be their fault in that specific case.) Depression and anxiety in victims of abuse again makes them out of control of their actions but it still makes them a cheater. To be a cheater, you have to have a wide-ranging combination of selfishness, dissatisfaction (in the relationship or generally in life), and a complete lack of a backbone.
