But didn't someone have to manually program it to be blue?
@bhull2423 жыл бұрын
@@nthgth As Naru Y said, the original game does program Player 2 to be blue wherever Player 1 is red, and the sprite data controls which color within whatever palette is used gets used on each pixel. Now, I’d have to look at the other colors besides blue and red used to be sure that they also match up, but it’s entirely plausible that they didn’t do anything to even change the palette for Player 1, just the sprite data itself, in which case the palette swap for Player 2 should give the same results.
@ZenoDLC2 жыл бұрын
@@bhull242 So basically, it's something like this? Var_P1_Color = F00; Var_P2_Color = (Var_P1_Color - E10); End;
@bhull2422 жыл бұрын
@@ZenoDLC I mean, kinda? But not exactly. The way old 8- and 16-bit games worked, you basically programmed multiple palettes of colors, and then the sprite data would say which color of a palette to use, but not which palette. So, when displayed on screen, the game would tell the console what sprite and palette to display. To save on memory and development costs, a lot of games would use the exact same sprite data for two things (often players 1 and 2) but switch up the palette. So, it’d be like a color-by-number thing, but there are only 7 numbers plus a no-fill option, and then which colors to use for each number is the palette. In this case, for example, color 1 on player 1’s palette is could be red, while it’s blue on player 2’s palette.

I honestly looked through the console to see this very comment. Yes, the processor had problems dealing with the sprites on the screen so as you killed them it got faster and faster. @soyuzistrepublic97715 жыл бұрын
Dont steal others comments, especially if it is near the top
@bhull2423 жыл бұрын
@@danimorgan6669 Actually, I looked at the specs and the code for the original arcade, and from what I can tell, it really was that inefficient at handling that many sprites at one time. And by that many, I do mean that it would, in fact, still experience noticeable slowdown when you’re down to just your ship, two enemies, that UFO that sometimes appears, the HUD, and the obstacles as the only things on screen (though the only things slowing down would be the two enemies due to the way the code works), and that slowdown would in fact noticeably increase for every additional sprite. If you took the exact same code from the original and had it work with different processors that wouldn’t clog up so easily, so to speak, then the game would actually play at that incredibly high speed the entire time. And, in fact, later versions actually had to specifically code in that the number of enemy ships left will change the speed at which those enemies will move, and neither that code nor anything similar is in the original. There is nothing in the code that explicitly says to adjust the speed of the ships at all under any conditions. To make it short (and yes, this is an oversimplification, but it gets the idea across), basically there were six things that were handled at any given time, each of which would get treated as a single packet: 1) your ship, 2) the obstacles, 3) the HUD, 4) the randomly appearing UFO, 5) projectiles, and 6) the other enemy ships. Each of these six get handled separately and don’t interfere with each other, which is why the speed of your ship, the projectiles, and the UFO remain constant regardless of the number of ships displayed, and why the number of projectiles, what remains of the obstacles, and the UFO don’t affect the speed of the enemy ships. Essentially, each one gets its own pipeline more or less. However, of these, only the enemy-ships process has to handle multiple moving, animated, relatively complex/large sprites (the projectiles one only handles, like, maybe one enemy projectile at a time and some of your projectiles, and they’re very small and simple to draw to the screen so don’t take much processing power; the UFO and player ones only handle one sprite each; and the others don’t involve any actual animations or motion), so it easily gets clogged when there’s more than one of them. It actually would have been possible to reprogram the game to avoid or mitigate this “issue” (the code used to handle the enemy ship sprites is very inefficient and could easily be improved for better efficiency), but the dev decided not to bother for whatever reason. To be fair, the machine he was using to develop the game appears to have been much faster than the target machinery in the actual arcade machine, so this was likely only caught late in development and was determined not to be worth bothering with. It is possible that the speed was tweaked to account for this so that way it doesn’t get unbearably slow with all the ships and that the original code prerelease that they had when they discovered this wouldn’t have had the single ship go as fast as it does in the final release of the original arcade (I haven’t really investigated that possibility), but everything else was left essentially as-is. And while some games did involve making use of hardware quirks to do certain things that couldn’t really be done with explicit code having the hardware work as intended (like Vib-Ribbon being able to use music from actual audio CDs to create custom stages, so to speak, Rare’s idea for the stop-and-swap thing for Banjo-Kazooey and Banjo-Tooey, many unlicensed games, and a lot of the things that Traveler’s Tales was able to do, especially for the Sega Genesis, Amiga, and Sonic R games), this doesn’t really involve using crazy workarounds to circumvent hardware limitations or using code that appears specifically designed to do something odd; the code underlying the original arcade Space Invaders is very simple, and each design decision within the code has an obvious logical purpose without the slowdown. There is nothing to indicate that the slowdown was intended as a feature when the game was first programmed. And it’s not like bugs-becoming-features is particularly unusual, especially for early games. Many people are familiar with the similar story about Street Fighter II’s combo system, which we actually have documentation for the fact that it was discovered during development and left in because the devs thought that essentially no human being would be actually capable of pulling such things off in an actual game without special tools (which they were so very, very wrong about, of course). And technically Pong’s simplicity is also similar; the original version released was just a working prototype or proof-of-concept to demonstrate the basic idea to Atari’s execs, both in terms of hardware (which was basically a cardboard box with a TV screen, a very basic motherboard, and a basic, simple controller that only allowed movement in two directions and that’s it, all metaphorically and/or literally duct-taped together) and software (which, even for its time, was incredibly simple, with the most complicated things being translating the movement of the controller into repositioning one of the paddles (yeah, not exactly complicated there) and a very rudimentary AI for the other paddle. The guy who made and presented it had absolutely no intention or expectation of having any consumers so much as even see this original model, let alone actually play it; he was just presenting a first draft, maybe not even that, in order to show that the project could work so that it could continue into something a bit more advanced. Atari execs were so thrilled with the prototype they were presented with (and yet also unwilling to waste any more time or money on making improvements to it) that they actually took the prototype and had it walked to a nearby store for people to play it. That’s right: the original Pong arcade machine ever played by actual consumers was actually the first working model ever produced, period; it wasn’t the result of mass production or anything. They started mass-production of the machine _after_ that prototype was already available to the public, and while there were obviously _some_ changes made to the hardware (or at least the externals) to better facilitate mass-production and transportation of the machine across the country, the actual, functional components and the software were completely unchanged from the prototype. It was essentially still in the alpha stage of production when released: functional, but not intended for full on play-testing. It had also been made in less than a week. This whole thing of releasing an unfinished game against all reason has been a common theme for Atari, no matter how many times its leadership and employees have changed; it’s just about the only constant besides setting unrealistic deadlines and refusing to deviate at all (like with ET for the Atari 2600). The same things happened with the Atari 2600 port of Pac-Man and Driv3r, among oh so many others. Occasionally, like with Pong, it ended up paying off. Other times, it very much did not. And actually, even with Pong, it didn’t work out quite as well as it could have for them because it was both so simple (it has very, very little copyrightable elements) and so rushed (as they made it publicly available before doing any of the legal paperwork to register the copyright, trademark, or patent or anything like that) that other companies could and in fact did make their own identical or near-identical copies of Pong without any sort of licensing from Atari or anything and without fear of legal problems like copyright infringement.

I Figured out the company behind the retroplay tv and the company that made the shopping channel console. One consistency is that all of these consoles seem to have a copyright of "SR06882". Many of these consoles have this EXACT string of text as the copyright date but with one changing number (the date) I Have seen some with a date of "2009" "2005" and even "1999". I Think that's actually one of the companies that licenses out the hardware. The "1999" to "2005" ones seem to have those NES style hardware and the "2006" to "2007" seem to have SNES-like hardware, And the "2008-2011" ones seem to have SNES -style hardware again but with awful 3d prerendered sprites. I Don't think any were released after "2011" though. Fun Fact: Those "games" are stored as ".wxn" files as seen in the lexibook, And also as seen in the lexibook, The "2009-2011" consoles seem to be backwards compatible with the older consoles with the ".wxn" files. Also, One of the games says "Power joy ltd" The shopping channel one might be a variation of this. Apparently this has a cartridge too: bootleggames.wikia.com/wiki/Power_Joy_Classic_TV_Game

The company behind nearly all of the "original" games on this as well as the Atari and Intellivision hacks is Nice Code Software, which was founded by former members of another infamous bootleg development team, Dragon Co. F-22 and most of the Famicom/NES hacks were done by Inventor.

Mars Aguilar I don't even know if that's good or not. I've never had that system in my possession. In fact, every time I would go to Gamestop or other stores that sell the NES classic they would say that it's sold out. None of my friends had the system either. The only chance you have of getting that system is to go on Amazon or Ebay and pay out of your ass in order to get one. The cheapest the NES Classic is going for online is 300 dollars. That's the full price of an Xbox one or PS4.
@mattsmoo53787 жыл бұрын
Mars Aguilar Yeah, I'm not bummed out over this anymore. I used to be a couple months ago. I hope the SNES Classic is a real thing because that's my favorite system to play on. I don't know why Nintendo sends out such a tiny stock when they know that fans will immediately grab for their wallets and buy the system right away regardless of what it is.
@mattsmoo53787 жыл бұрын
Mars Aguilar Retro gaming has a huge following now. Ever since the year 2000 there has been a huge following for retro games and consoles. I didn't like Super Punch-Out all that much on the SNES because of the perspective of your boxer. That always tripped me up. When Nintendo came out with Punch-Out Wii I was super happy because it was like the NES game but very much improved graphically and gameplay wise.
@mattsmoo53787 жыл бұрын
Mars Aguilar I'm going to have to play Super Punch-Out on my SNES again to see if I can get any better at it. The only thing that makes the game hard for me is your opponents sometimes never give you a warning/sign on if their punches are coming. On the NES you could tell if punches were coming. In the world circuit is where the game really tests how good you are.
