I wanted to make an ambience of Combine radio chatter, from the perspective of the Ordinal (aka the Combine Captain), with the Ordinal holding a more important role as squad leader by relaying information to and from the Overwatch Voice.

I like how Grunts (Echo) are shown as inexperienced initiates on the radio chatter. In the first segment the ordinal requests everyone to report and after every experienced unit reported the situation, the Ordinal had to remind Echo he needs to report too.

I was a comms guy in the military- the accuracy of this is pretty astounding. There are actually echelons to radio traffic that mirrors actual military radio procedures. In the military, as you send radio messages “up” (to a higher element), those elements in turn do the same. So for Charger, Bladewall, etc. to contact Ordinal (who in turn contacts Overwatch is super accurate. In addition, the implication of being unable to hear Overwatch is that they’re on a different net (or frequency), just as you wouldn’t hear radio traffic with higher elements on your radio in real life. Fascinating stuff

so you're saying there's one team member let's call him commander is the only one who reports to overwatch and tells his team what overwatch needs done and the team reports to the commander and the commander reports to overwatch with what has been done and what is reguested to the team and the team can't hear overwatch while commander can?

After a long wait, Grunt tries to remind Ordinal of what they've been ordered to do Grunt: "Holding position, over." Ordinal: "Keep holding position. Wait for contact." Grunt: "Copy that." Grunt's getting impatient.

In Half Life 2 episode 1, there is a dialogue cut shortly before the release of the game by Alyx: "Well, where are your friends, huh? Stripped you to the skin and left you to die? What were you waiting for? They have no more humanity than you. Got off easy. Traitor." One detail can be distinguished from this dialogue, when Alyx saw stalkers, she pitied them and said that these were people who resisted. And she calls soldiers traitors, which means that all the soldiers voluntarily decided to obey

@@lois3469 I mean given the horrible conditions that in-universe life is like, if you had the chance for a better life you would take it regardless. Also the fact that many of the combine were former human soldiers of the collective worlds armies, or were former rebels who sold themselves to the combine if it meant they would live. Not knowing their horrible fate.

I enjoyed the little narrative you constructed from these voice lines. The Ordinal waiting to respond with his turn of the "numbers game" until after the Charger killed that AntiCitizen, as if he was considering it all the while directing and listening to his squadmate kill a person... paints a grim picture.

Ah, I think the numbers game is not a game, but a summarized biodat update, as seen at 0:40 Similar things are done in the real military. A "9-liner," for example, is a request to evacuate casualties. There's 9 datapoints, always listed in the same order, so you'll just read the 9 datapoints one after another over the radio without further description, just to be efficient. Same with a proper SITREP, which has 8 datapoints, etc The charger has 6 datapoints, because he has a shield charge, but everyone else only has 5, because they don't.

love how you can imagine the series of events as they unfold over the radio, and how they respond to eachothers actions (like the ordinal chuckling when charger successfully tricks somebody out into the open) also how their reactions are broadcast along the radio, with the chargers little "goddammit" between lure attempts

I’m not sure the Charger actually did manage to lure that person out into the open. Because his “*laughing* I found you!” makes it seem like he just, found the persons hiding spot and just shot them right there, fish in a barrel style. Equally gruesome, but I don’t think he actually did lure them out.

I dont think they were sent off. Rather the combine just developed more better soldiers, and rebuilt all those guys into them

probably not, i think what they did was take the remaining combine (grunts,charger,suppressor,ordinal) and turned them into upgraded or promoted ones in half life 2, so the grunts more than likely to become CP, (Civil Protection) or ground units considering the fact both grunts and metro cops/police are the weakest and the lowest ranked out of their games, Chargers are more than likely to be a shotgunner combine or prison guard depending on how they acted (for example if they were always pressuring the target like their name technically says they would probably be a shotgunner because they are fairly similar. But if they kept their distance from the target and protecting themselves with their shield to defeat the target they would be a prison guard.) Suppressors im not so sure of, they were probably the one to be moved off world but if i went in terms of similarity MAYBE the early cut "Combine Guard" OR the suppressors were downgraded to a Combine soldier or another cut npc the "Cremator", Now finally the ordinal, The ordinal was either Promoted Or Upgraded, If we are talking promoted we should all know the answer, if the ordinal was PROMOTED it would be a combine elite. if the ordinal was upgraded it would be a Combine Sniper,Overwatch soldier, or Combine soldier.

Some of CP units are former inmates or mental ill or were considered such. So in some way your Statment is tru, but we know, there peaceful people and high violent even in normal citizens, some either because of drugs, money, same mental condition. Union don't see usefulness in empathy as needed, more like It was unnecessary part of human brain. So inner violence is accepted due useful in combat, as hunger or fear. Maybe even love. But not empathy.

My take is the soldiers are reporting percentages. Stimdose 32(%) might refer to some kind of stimulant soldiers take and how much they have left, daggers refers to their weapons and/or ammunition, shield I can only guess refers to their armour (as all units will mention shields), bi prox I have no idea what that refers to (bio proximity maybe?). Audibles and lightvis seems to refer to how much the soldier can hear and see. As for the r string of numbers, it’s unknown what they actually mean but in this custom scenario it’s a mental game they’re playing.
