Everyone who watches this video should learn CPR. YOU may have to save a family member, a friend, neighbor, or a stranger from dying. My father was a 27 year fire fighter in Rochester, Indiana. On behalf of my father and my family we urge all who watch this video to learn CPR.

Today is the 30th anniversary of when this happened so Stephanie is 42 now. At the time this happened, I lived in Charlotte, North Carolina. I was 12 and in the sixth grade attending Selwyn Elementary School and my brother Andrew was 10 and in fourth grade attending Huntingtowne Farms Elementary School. This also happened seven days before my cousin Vinny’s third birthday.

When I saw John collapse, I was frightened because I didn’t know what had happened to him at first. I’m sure that he can never thank Stephanie enough for what she did for him and I’m sure there will always be a special place in his heart for her. He’s 79 now and I’m sure he’ll tell his grandchildren about this. If Stephanie wasn’t there or he had been running alone, John wouldn’t be here today. I’d be completely devastated if that was my father but if he ever needs me, I’m right there for him and he’d do the same for me.

I will tell you that this is very unusual, all police officers even back then are required to have CPR training. The officer should have never had a child doing CPR. Maybe the officer was inexperienced and if that was the case he should not be working as a police officer. I do give credit to the young lady who initiated CPR and bought this man valuable time until the paramedic unit arrived. I am an EMT of 16 years. Anytime that we have had a cardiac arrest and the police have arrived before us they are doing CPR.
