Dispatchers do get a lot of prank calls. I think this dispatcher did a great job. There is a lot going on with this call. The young woman was of course scared and panicking, plus the dogs were making a lot of noise. Unless you have actually handled some of these types of calls you really have no idea the pressure that there is for all involved. 🇨🇦

@Robert Ikr? The operator tried to explain it, by saying people often ring up exaggerating injuries to get help quicker - she said 'someone says they're bleeding to death, and it's just a little cut'. I think if anyone's exaggerating, it's the operator. I don't believe many people at all would ring up screaming they are bleeding to death with stab wounds, when (for example) they've just got a little nick on their arm that doesn't even require an ambulance. U might get some people exaggerating slightly - but not that much. Sometimes, 911 operators don't want to believe what's going on, and downplay it to themselves if possible. Or they are in the habit that some doctors are (which has also led to problems on occasion) - they look for 'horses, not zebras'. It means a tendency to assume any patient will statistically be more likely to have a common problem, rather than a rarer one. That might work on probabilities. If each patient has 95% probability of having x problem, and only 5% probability of y problem, each patient is far more likely to have x problem. But of course, eventually 5% of patients are going to have y problem. U can't shut ur mind off to that possibility, as some professionals do.

It's not always that simple. If you've never been in a situation like that you don't know what it's like. He could have threatened her, he could have told her if she said anything that he'd kill the man trying to help and then her. It's like when Elizabeth Smart was rescued and people would keep asking "Why didn't you just run or yell to the people looking for you?'. Brian David Mitchell told her if she made a sound he'd kill her and her family.
