In my ignorance 45 or so years ago I took my camp group on a hike in the Hudson Valley. We stopped to look in a chicken operation similar to this. I was horrified and got my 8 year olds out of there. I was too traumatized to even make sense of it to my kids. We went back to the hike. I hate that trait in humans to treat animals cruelly and find faith restored little by little by efforts such as this. May the good people win out.

As long as you buy meat you are supporting the exploitation of animals. You can keep telling yourselves that better conditions make it less exploitative and more "humane" but it doesn't. "free range" and "sustainable" sound nice but are often not even close to what they want you to think, and the animals end up getting exploited and slaughtered at a very young age anyways. I hope you can learn to put the life of a sentient being above a few moments of taste-bud pleasure.

I’m not vegan, I’m not a vegetarian. I have my own girls, and for the first time I’m able to have a rooster. They are bringing me such joy. The eggs are only a bonus. My sister can’t understand why I have a chicken sitting on eggs. How do you explain to her that some chickens, get an urge to brood. They get depressed if you keep breaking them from broodiness. So why not, if you love your chickens. I watch and care for them. At least once a day in the evening she comes off the nest to drink and eat, and return to the nest. I ferment their foods so they have the best available to them. Every few days I check three or four chickens, examine them closely, the feeling that washes over me, when they are in such great shape. With thick feathers, no mites, no lice, and their skin is not dry but smooth, legs and claws are soft. I do not feel sorry that I’m not a vegan. I do eat meat, but I eat far less than what I used to. 40 years ago I came to that point. I had to decide. When I made my decision, I also gave up a great deal of meat, but not the flavor. I had plans on raising my own animals, guaranteeing that they had the best life possible and could enjoy absolutely every day. And when I came to take their life, it would be gentle, and painless. I found out I cannot take the life of animals I watch grow, I know their personality, their quirks, and it is something beyond my ability. The total and complete trust they have, I cannot betray that. So a few days a week are meatless. I’ve learned to embrace legumes and other forms of protein. I find, and pay for, small operations where I can visit and see for myself the humanity of the animals are raised with. And most of all I think them for the sacrifice of their life for mine and I do not waste anything.

Why do you guys not understand that veganism cannot be achieved on a global scale? Have you guys been so sheltered all your lives that you haven’t seen the suffering of third world countries? Children dying of debilitating diseases because they don’t have access to the correct proteins? I’ve seen cases of kwashiorkor and it is difficult for even crop farmers to support a family based off just plants. Meat is required there. So don’t allow children to suffer as a result of your selfish first world requirements. Best we can do is to let these chickens live in healthy conditions and not suffer like in this video, but meat consumption is a staple for many countries.

I know not everyone has that opportunity, but if you DO, spend a few $s more and get food that tastes much better (and feels better buying). To all the people who cant or dont want to go vegan after seeing this and still say 'im just eat little eggs', how about this: why dont cut all products, where eggs are not nessecary? Bake your cookies without eggs, there are so many products containing dairy and eggs because it's cheap. Choose the vegan mayo, choose the noodles without eggs. It tastes the same. If we would only eat eggs for what it is like an egg in a pan and drink milk for what it is: in a glass and buy the rest in vegan (except cheese), the industry would die. You do not have to go vegan to support humane treatment of farm animals. Realizing that not all folks can or should farm farm, you can look into joining farm co-ops where you can visit and see for yourself how the animals live and then you can access the eggs and other products that come from those farms. You can also ask to visit farms that show up at farmers markets to see first hand if they live up to their hype and if so, purchase your farm products from them. You need to realize that farms have to be concerned about biosecurity (keeping the farms free of contamination by chemicals and biohazards) but most have days set up for visitors in which biohazard suits are available for a donation and you can check things out. Just do not be put off by the farmers need to protect their farm, not all are trying to hide something bad. In fact I would be suspicious of the farms that have no serious concerns about biosecurity. Of course if you do see something bad, take pics, ask questions and report if you see evidence of abuse or harmful farming practices that would endanger the health of the public or farm workers. Sustainable, ethical farming may mean you pay higher prices and if the choice is eating a couple eggs over a dozen, most of us do OK with cutting back. Many larger farmers' markets accept SNAP (formerly called food stamp) payments, but again do your homework to make sure the farms you support are what they say they are. It would be good if WIC offered the choice of purchasing products from farmers'' markets but I do not believe they do at this time.

Hard to know how the animals are being treated when you can't watch over them 24/7. And not many people can afford it. But def a good start.
@farmwife79445 жыл бұрын
@@sanne4419 farmers who abuse their animals leave obvious evidence and it's not just one thing that they do. The problem lies in lack of regular yet unplanned inspections. Good farms will pass with only minor issues depending on the time of inspection, such as water bowls needing refilling at a certain time of day right before that chore is scheduled to be done, but at all times the animals will look healthy, alert, active and in bad farms manure will be piled up, food lacking, animals looking less than healthy. Another revealing issue is looking at vet records. Neglectful farms will get meds and treat without vets showing up or will not treat and will attempt to hide sick animals. Vets who do show up can attest to conditions, in fact they are the ones who usually report negligence when they finally are called to the seen.

We adopted 8 ex-battery hens on 1st March this year (2020) after reading about the sad lives that they lead. I really didn't know whether it would be a good idea or not, but we went for it. Our lovely ladies are now the happiest hens! They are an absolute joy. So funny and the kids love them. It relaxing to hang out with them. One of the best decisions we made and they reward us (and the neighbours) with eggs. I highly recommend adopting ex-batts.

I love chickens with all my heart, I even raise them and am the only one in my family who cares for them, but I still eat animal products like eggs and meat, cuz humans were meant to eat meant AND fruits and vegetables, but this is nothing against vegans, but if animals will eat us then I am going to return the favor

The British Gamer Highly doubt, more likely for people to be vegetarian than vegan by a good chunk of the population, mainly due to the less frequent breeding of large live stock for meat because it’s inefficient, most meat production will probably become delegated to smaller animals or synthetic lab meat. Also with such a large population and the chains of natural selection being lifted off many more people with deficiencies are to exist. Of course there’s always genetic engineering of course.
