Kambi is a baby Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who got herself stuck on a balcony with no way to climb or fly out.
She was just hanging on the air conditioner. Balconies and courtyards and light wells are traps for bats unless they have something to climb onto to fly out. Too many smooth surfaces.
Kambi (from Kambala St) is an early flyer, inexperienced and unaware of the hazards of city obstacles.
Without the members of public calling for rescue, she'd have died there in a few days.
She's in care now. She has hit her head and is not really all that happy with life. Also, once the babies come into care they have an emotional crash. The life they once knew is totally changed and they're terrified and not sure of what their role in life is anymore. They miss their mum, who would still be feeding them, and everything is so different (food, drink, surroundings) they just shut down emotionally and pretend to be a little baby, completely passive.
Sometimes this is because of a mild head injury but sometimes it's an emotional reaction to the situation they find themselves in.
Cupid and Quip went through it but rapidly found their mojo again.
Kambi is still at the terrified and bewildered stage, with a little bit of rattled brains thrown in from her collision and efforts to get off the balcony. The home owners said they heard her bashing into the glass overnight.
So now we give her love, care, and watch her and see how she goes.
Update:
Kambi was released late in March 2018 in a soft release where she gradually integrated into the local colony but always had food back at the cage if she couldn't find enough for herself.
