Here's the story about how I have another rescue hedgehog in my care. If you think you have found a sick or injured animal in the wild, call your local wildlife rescue for advice.
Hedgehogs should not be out in the daytime, they are nocturnal animals. If you see them wandering around in the day, they are probably unwell.
If you find a sick or injured hedgehog:
✿ Call your local wildlife rescue for advice
✿ Find secure box with high sides
✿ Keep it somewhere warm and dark
✿ Use some shredded newspaper or a towel for it to hide in
✿ Provide shallow dishes of water and if available some dog or cat food (not fish flavours)
✿ Never give milk or bread
✿ If you find a nest, don't touch or move it
Thanks for watching xx

Found a baby wandering round in the middle of the day today. Very very small and not moving in a specific direction. We presumed him lost so called a Hedgehog rescue and brought him in. Turns out he still needed milk so I’m very glad he’s in a safe place now.

You do such a good job! I found 2 hoglets the other day on a grass verge by a road. They were crying out, and they were super cold. So I put them in a box with a towel and thankfully found a local hedgehog rescue woman just like you!!

I know!! I was surprised when I picked him up and he uncurled! He’s had a lot of human contact with his ordeal so has got a bit too tame. We will be having minimal contact with him to try to prepare him for re-release. He has also got used to coming out in the day so we need to break that habit before he can go out into the world ❤️

I just started getting hedgehogs from the shelter to release into the wild (my garden is a good starting point). we got the first one a few days ago and he keeps coming back for food in the evenings. super satisfying.

Well on you keep up the good work. I’m in Ireland and have just rescued a teenager hedgehog from a nearby building sight 3 days ago. I think his sibling is living in my front town garden which is a very small, busy and an unsuitable place for them to live. I’m afraid to let this one out of the house for fear of cats, dogs and cars. He’s just the calmest little critter, he started eating the minute I got him. I only saw him curl in a ball once that was when I rescued him. Should I let him out or am I being selfish keeping him cause we all love him soo much and we think we should fatten him up before releasing him in a nature park.

@@thebee8415 keeping them inside in summer is not recommended, they do belong outside and will usually feed themselves. I think in Germany it´s not even allowed to keep them as pets if they´re healthy enough to get along on their own. If there is food (insects) and water (!), he should be fine in a park.

Lisa Neumann Ah thanks for quick reply you got me thinking the right way so I will be letting him go today. I think I know a perfect spot. I’m going to miss his little face what a cutie 🦔❤️

@@thebee8415 yes, they are the sweetest. the one we let out keeps coming back and the food we put outside attracted a second one. will see them through the winter by providing food, water and shelter in the garden if needed.

Hello....I found a hedgehog crossing the road out in the daytime..so I bought him home and made him a safe place to stay in a cat box with cat food....water and a blanket and heat pad.....he seems underweight.....should I leave him inside or should I do what you have done outside? I'm just worried about him being too cold with being underweight...should I get him to a good weight and then do the outside pen? You look like your doing a great job...and know what your on about....all new to me...never looked after a hedgehog before :) x

Hi, I always check with my local wildlife rescue as they are the experts. Sometimes hedgehogs need treatment before release too, there's probably a reason they are out in the daytime. I give them a call and follow their instructions. I hope it all works out with the little guy

All the rescues active on Facebook hedgehog groups actually recommend dry cat food over wet, eating nothing but wet cat food for long periods of time can result in rotted teeth & nothing can be done at that point but to put to sleep, a hedgehog rescue posted one sad story about the dangers of feeding nothing but wet cat/dog food as that's exactly what one person had done for their visiting hedgehogs & one ended up with rotted teeth as a result, the act of chewing the dry food helps keep their teeth clean. You should also be wearing gloves when handling them a lot, I'm surprised the rescue you dealt with didn't make you aware of that. Regarding milk, I would of mentioned in the video that drinking it can actually kill them or at the very least make them very ill as they're lactose intolerant.

Hi, I believe I did mention about not giving milk in the video? Although it’s been a while since filming this so maybe I missed that out. I generally do wear gloves when handling them as you can see in my other hedgehog video but yes, in hindsight I should probably have put them on for this video too. I am not an expert in hedgehog diets, I was following the advice I was given by my local hedgehog rescue but it does appear to be in line with advice that organisations such as the RSPCA and the British Hedgehog Protection Society still recommends. I am happy to do some more research into this for future releases though, which rescue are you referring to?

Hello! Great video and tips, I was wondering what an ideal weight for a hedgehog should be! Thank you..

What's an ideal weight? I have a youngster, found him on my lawn and he was a bit shaky on his feet. Advised to keep him warm, fed and watered for a few days before rushing to a rescue. He was 293 grams when I found him and after 10 days he's 461 grams and seems to be walking okay. What's your advice? When should I release him? We have three others visiting our garden and they're much bigger. Thank you, Gaynor Mainwaring Primrose

What if you find a baby hoglett no mother nearby, the animal shelter is not open, middle of the night? What would you do then? Just curious hopefully this wouldn't happen but i do have hedgehogs coming to my garden quite often also have a pond with very steep edges although there is some wood in there so that they can climb out but I still recently found a 1\2month old (I'm guessing) hoglett in the pond dead sadly, we even have a wire mesh over the pond but he still found his way in and sadly drowned, he was in perfect condition when found so hadn't been in there very long was just so so very sad

We have got lots of new build housing where i live (a massive field is being built on ) and ive noticed about 5 hedgehogs in our street ,this isnt good because we have lots of small roads that they are crossing 😢at the mo ive got a hoglet in a hog house in my garden , i also have a couple of big ones visit and i saw another baby hog at about 5am this morning ,im so worried they are all going to get run over ,the other day one of the big ones got squished out side my house (i was quite up set about this ) i feel like fencing my garden so they cant get out and just keeping them in my garden 😢

My rescue place told me babies cannot digest some were food. Gravy it's not good for them. I think jelly it is. Atm I use dried kitten food but for big babies I put some water to make it softer in case they have no teeth yet. I'm I doing it wrong? My rescue place gives them especial milk formula mix with kitten food

It's a European Hedgehog or British Hedgehog, they are a native species here in the UK and Europe, although there aren't as many around as there used to be because their population has been in decline ☹️
