The brief comment about a kiln led me to watch older videos about it. I am impressed by both the ingenuity and is label of "Redneck Kiln'. Smart use of materials and continuous improvements. The daughters are performing as valued team members as is the necessity in family business. This family dynamic should be documented for business schools to teach. Boss should rightly be most proud.

The waste pieces for the fireplace and woodstove. Walnut is just about the best for a warm fire. The scent is sweet and heavenly both before, as in fresh cut or after as it burns. As lumber for a project, furniture, few woods are its equal for beauty, workability, stability, and finish. A prince among hardwoods.

@@kevinfiess4494 I may have been doing this too many years,, so take any opinion with a healthy disrespect,,, I hate white oak. Laughing, It may well be the strongest, toughest, even very good looking,, but working it,,, it has a peed and poop barnyard scent to it. Tastes just as bad. That being said,,, there are MANY subspecies of white oak. Mostly familiar with New England white oak. The oldest commissioned warship in the world, USS Constitution, still afloat in Charlestown Harbor launched in 1797,, double planked New England white oak,, 'Old Ironsides' Literally, iron cannon balls would bounce off the hull vs penetrate. Just don't try to plane or sand it. It dulls aluminum oxide sand paper. Order in, have it shipped, Ohio black walnut,, or Michigan black walnut (L.L. Johnsons in Charlotte , MI ? ) Just one piece to play with. You won't be sorry you did. Actually,, have the girls, Jade and Em, send you a small plank,, or even a 4 foot piece of the slab wood. Just to play with. They'd love the business.

The shame is that the beauty of the wood is often best seen at the time of sawing. Some mills are designed to optimise the view of the log. Many are from poor to appalling. Typically horizontal mills are in this category. But the camera can be moved. As for the timber. Black walnut is by comparison very boring compared to European but rarely from managed woodland. I have cut hundreds of butts from garden lots of both species and have yet to see a single board of interest. However I have seen truly exceptional furniture from 17c European makers that are beyond belief. Ho hum. Just because it' has a reputation of being a special wood it doesn't mean it ever will be. Especially if the sawing pattern is wrong. Curl mahogany Oak and elm burr Lace wood Wainscott oak To name a few.

That log is hard to cut because it is so dry, but the lumber still has to be put in the kiln? Looking forward to seeing those walnut book shelves! Mostly for philosophy books? Ken Wheeler over at Theoria Apophasis has a recommended reading list. Emerald, the way you handle the day-to-day struggles of running the mill is inspiring to me, like hitting nails. I had my son helping me this afternoon and it felt good to get some help. I may feel like an old Walnut log but I can still dress myself! Idea: Put both the microphones on Emerald. That should make the sound record on both tracks instead of just one. See if that fixes the problem some are having when on headphones or earbuds.

Depending on how you get the audio into your video, you could mark each microphone channel as “mono”, which will then feed the audio to both left and right channels. Or you could do it in hardware with a simple mechanism (simple mixer or possibly even Y cables).
@Snarkapotamus
@Snarkapotamus Жыл бұрын
@@MrRonWessels - That would be the best way. But, because they use background music, that might be an issue for them. They simply either need to crack the manual on their editing software or spend a few bucks for someone to show them how it all works...but mono'logue should be mono.

I’ve bought lumber that is stacked right off the saw with all the sawdust still on it and it’s a pain to deal with, when all you have to do is flip the board over on the table to knock off the sawdust before stacking. It helps. Love all your vids of the adventures of you and your sister.👍

I'm glad to see the use of ear protection on both. Interesting to hear the differences in wood as it ages and the milling issues. One ongoing issue for every wood butcher is how to desl with unwanted metal obstacles. Electronic sensors help with four quarter stock. When the team cuts through the nails I was very interested to see how the metal was removed to prevent the next blade from dulling. Perhaps this issue would be an interesting video or to save various parts of videos illustrating the variety of hidden metal problems. It is correct - hitting metal and paying to have a chipped carbide tooth causing a sharpening does suck.

That sucks about finding nails in the wood, but glad it didn't do any other damage then damage the blade. Looking at the close up of the wood grain on the few cuts you made by that stage of the video, I think it will look pretty good, all depends what stain you will put on it, a natural stain or a light or dark color. I will be interested in the finished product. Keep up the good work, I have only been here for a short time, but I have been enjoying all your content from starting in the woods falling the trees to the milling, and your compost pile and chipped wood. Your family definitely has all the bases covered for a house and yard.

Walnut was my favorite wood to work. A nice batch cut like butter with sharp tools. It finishes wonderfully and needs no stain. It even gets a nice UV patina like cherry over time. I planted 3 American Black walnuts in my back yard 30 years ago and they are tall and never had so many nuts as this year. I couldn't walk under them without literally stepping on a nut. The squirrels hid nuts on my fence since they ran out of ground to bury them for winter. I hope this means a bad winter. You go lumbergirls.

I thought for a second that gray pickup in the background drove up and snagged your B-roll camera shooting from out in the yard, and then drove off with it. It would nice, that when the wood gets hard like that, you could switch to phasers in place of metal blades. But we don't have those yet (phasers). Great job cutting. The stacks look really nice.
