Was a builder for many years, retired now, builders building rustic, homes, cabins ,log homes might be a Great way to make more money on your small logs. As a builder he can pay you good money for ways he can offer little extras to his clients. I can think of many ways I could have used an had you to cut for me! One months interest payments will buy a lot of little extra touches. By the way you guys are GREAT.

The forest will eventually use tops and smaller logs for soil building which is not really a waste. I remember my Dad had a logger drop a couple hundred Beech tress so the more valuable trees would grow in. It took a couple of decades but there is no trace of those felled Beech trees today. Good deep soils make for a healthy forest. There is years of firewood left behind as well. If I had what the Boss has, two of the hardest working lumber ladies maybe things would be different. There is something to be said for not sending you children to college!

Here’s a suggestion that you might want to consider with these small logs. Custom builders would definitely buy pre cut one- wane edge beams for exposed ceiling beams-3,4&5 thick, and as wide as you can get, like 8,9,maybe more. I believe if you built up a stock of these and passed the word around, there are dozens of builders who would like to just pick’em up rather than make a custom order. A lot less slabwood in the end. You could also ask premium prices for these because these would be used in high end projects where art is involved. Love your spunk!

Using less than ideal logs, is part of my argument for keeping the LT-40 even after you get the LT-70. You keep the LT-70 on the truly high production jobs and do the lessor jobs on the slower LT-40 and LT-15. I can see Emerald on the LT-70, Jade on the LT-40 and Judah on the LT-15. Likely need three swampers, two on the LT-70 and one on the LT-40. Judah can work away on RR ties with out a swamper: just a hydraulic crane.

@@KenBreon Sorry to hear that the 40 has to go for the down payment on the 70. However does that mean that a 70 is coming soon? My money idea won't help at this time because one has to get it set up and built up first, but have you looked into Paradigm Life Bank on Yourself system yet? No down payment needed!! 100% financing!!! Take the little class at Paradigm Life and see what you think of the system.

Top log is some of the best material , the knots are live. The material has less stress in it that you some times get in the lower part of the tree , this results in less splitting and cracking as well as the boards staying a lot straighter before and after machining. i have worked with swedish sawmills for years developing usage of these small section sizes.

Great Videos! I do have some suggestions, learned the hard way, of course. 1. Wear leather gloves; I have a lot of hand injuries over the decades. About the time you run a sliver through your hand, you will agree, better to wear gloves. 2. Lower back support belt; purchased at any Walmart or Amazon. The type that velcro latches up front. You will thank me in your 60's, or sooner! 3. Eye protection: Sooner or later, you will run the saw into a spike or other item the tree grew around and your saw blade will come apart or other flying debris will slap you on the noggin. In 1987, I had an eye injury that required 6 hours of surgery to put back together. It was a horrible experience and still makes me cringe. 4. Knee Pads; Somewhere a long the way, you will take a blow to the knee(s) and your knee cap will be broken and like mine, was shoved about 4 inches higher than where it should be. Again, surgery and 6 weeks of hobbling around and another year before it was back to feeling normal. Safety First Ladies, Safety First!
