Hi everyone, cool outboard, I have my grandpa's 5 1/2hp Johnson Seahorse, is about a 1952. Do yourself a favor, where you tighten motor to boat, get a small rope or chain and fasten to the motor, and have it long enough to tie around a spot on seat, it is just a safety percussion in case motor comes loose on boat, that I don't fall in the lake or it will be gone, have fun fishing, is the most relaxing hobby you could ever have, cheers

Just a hint of precaution always keep a plug wrench and an extra set of plugs in dry store on boat. Those ol 2 strokes often like to foul a plug even running wide open . It a lot easier to change plugs than to paddle all the way back to the launch. I think if not mistaken those Wizard motors were sold by SEARS . But I may be wrong. To add long life to that old motor you should make your gas oil mix just a tad more rich than prescribed. It be more better to have a bit of smoke and run cooler than run it too lean. That's why you keep extra plugs so you keep running. Be sure and find non ethanol gas that crap will destroy the carbs on that old gal! Be looking forward to the next adventure be safe!

Thanks for sharing, perfect video to have on while I work on some Ranchero parts on a rainy day... Old boats are the best. My grandpa's 'old man by the sea' was stolen from my garage in the late 1900s. It was a 1965 Seaflight (later hydroswift). It was so fun, I keep hoping she will turn up, but 25 years is a long time. Enjoy the memories.

Its hard to believe how much the kid has grown up since i have been watching this channel. There is a likely chance that you guys will be able to make that engine be able to run remotely with the steering wheel. They make lots of universal cables that will fit on that engine. You guys have proved your ability to fabricate and improvise through adversity. I feel confident that you will be able to make it work. I have restored many old boats and would be more than willing to assist in helping you find the correct parts. Also, I suggest keeping an eye out on market place for a sweet vintage trolling motor. It will greatly contribute to the ability to fish out of this rig!

If the windshield is not cracked, just kind of foggy you might try using tooth power mixed into a paste if you can find some. I have used it many times on plastic, usually on old car radio dials to make them clear again. The last one I did it on was the radio out of a Mercedes Gullwing. The tooth powder does a good job of polishing the plastic.

The last boat windshield that I needed I had made. I went and got the manufacture name off a windshield on a boat at Bass Pro of all places. They were more than happy to make a custom windshield. We made up a template of what we wanted and sent it to them. About month later we had a windshield back with all the mounting hardware that fit perfect.

Love that you snagged a vintage motor to power that sweet lil gem! We had an electric trolling motor that we stashed in our vintage aluminum boat as a backup. Hey guys ! Before going to replace the windscreen, use an acrylic lacquer clear spray can on a section of the plexiglass... You should use fine wet sandpaper or cloth on the surface that has the most damage from the ultraviolet light. ( front facing surface usually )

Truly a fantastic '57 boat. A find of a lifetime. Not to mention picking up 'the Wizard' and getting it running so quickly. Unbelievable that it runs so smooth. It looks like the throttle may need some 'brand' of penetrating oil squirted in the housing to loosen up it's reaction time. I know nothing about boats, but I do know a thing or two about 'sticky throttles'. I also am a great fan of 'The Kid', she is definitely a 'Gem'. Your whole family is awesome. Keep up the great content, and may God continue Blessing you!

My Dad bought a brand new 14' Montgomery Ward aluminum boat in 1957. He got a 5hp Sea King outboard to go with it. We used it on Michigan lakes and rivers. He gave it to me in the 70s and I used it until the aluminum on the bottom developed pin holes and it began to leak. That boat did yoeman service for our family.

The windscreen can be cleaned and made clear by micro sanding it with the same items we use in aviation on the their windscreens. It’s not cheap but it saves dollars down the road once you get the kit. Since I’ve been away from wrenching on aircraft for a number of years, I can’t give you a ballpark figure for the price.

This is really none of my business but after owning many many boats over the years a little piece of advice I can give you which has always turned out to be true is that you alway put the biggest motor that the boat is rated for on it and nothing smaller. Going larger will not hurt it either but never lower than maximum rated horsepower for a boat if you want it to perform right and not be disappointed in it's performance.

Just a tip from personal experience. Keep the gas line from the tank as short as practically possible and the primer bulb should be as close to the motor as possible and hanging vertically. This is advice that was once given to me that made all the difference in the world for a 15 hp Evinrude. Love that little boat BTW.

That 12HP Wizard brings back some good and HORRIBLE memories. I grew up in Turkey. I am 77 years old. I remember that engine rather well. It was my first outboard engine on my first boat when I was a teen. I don't remember where my father got it from it must not have had a return policy. Spent an entire summer vacation at our summer home trying to make it work. Sometimes it started. Those were the good times that lasted about 3-4 minutes. No dealers, no parts, just change the spark plug, clean the carburetor and pull. Entire summer spent doing just that,. I hope you have better luck with it than I did.

The Kid did a nice job of picking up that motor, but you gotta be careful, I picked up the 15hp for my boat which I’ve done countless times before and I ended up pulling a hamstring. My F-I-L had built some stands out of wood with some casters for storage, nowadays I wheel the boat as close to the garage as I can and wheel the motor as close to the boat and then it’s a lift off the stand and onto the boat. Haven’t had an issue since, as you get older things you did before when you were younger take some planning out
