This week I take a very old Skaven Grey Seer model and give him a new paintjob! These old pewter models are often full of character and interesting details. Don't pass them up for the new hottness (in some cases lol) because you can always strip them down to bare metal and get a brand new model for much less money. Thank you Chris H for sending this awesome sculpt in, it's a fantastic model and deserves to be put onto the table.

Looks cool, as always. I generally don't use straight Metal Colour Copper anymore, because I think adding in a bit of Metal Colour Gold produces nicer hues. Adding a bit of Magnesium or Gunmetal darkens it pretty well, if necessary. YMMV, of course.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
I still need to try mixing them and seeing how dark I can get it, this copper straight out of the bottle is really bright. Might be better suited for a dark gold highlight. Still, these paints are fantastic so far :)
@briangilgan
@briangilgan 5 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. My complaint about the copper paint is that its too red for my tastes most of the time. My complaint about the Metal Colour line in general is the limited number of colours. Having said that, I don't use any other metal paints anymore :)

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Some of my favorite are chainmail minis for D&D from around the 90s. They don't have much mold lines and ushually a good deal except the gnoll monk. But yeah the mold lines can be a pain to deal with but I noticed on the Wizkids minis have some odd mold lines that are worse to deal with like along the hair line.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, once they started mass producing models with Wizkids they got a little worse. I hate it when there are mold lines on hair!!!Some of those old DnD minis are pricey these days!
@CosmicDuskWolf

@@eBayMiniatureRescues Some yes, but there are some great deals on 1st and second edition ones. Some people are selling tones of minis like an incredible amount for 40 to 50 bucks. Which for the amount of minis is a pretty good deal. Also chainmail minis are ushually pretty good depending on the seller.

I'm not sure how well Isopropyl works on old (30+ yrs) white metal/pewter figures painted in enamel paints, but if you're careful, oven cleaner works really well as does acetone thinner. I need to get some Isopropyl for my new sla 3d printer (so new it's not even out of the box yet) so I can give that a whirl once I have some. I was going to start painting up my Vampires, but I've been roped into DMing 'Space 1889' so I'm hunting up Victorian style figures. I'm not sure what to do about Martians and Venusians, though as they're really specific. Eh. I'm still painting figures, just not the ones I planned to be painting! (edit for clarity)
@eBayMiniatureRescues

I’ve used iso on some older GW models and it worked great, and I know they had some nasty enamel paints on them. I have had problems with it not taking some glues off very well. The sonic cleaner tends to shake that stuff off a little better. I suppose acetone pretty much works the same way as iso when it comes to stripping. Now that you have a 3d printer you could make some cool bits to convert those new figures. I really need to look into something so I can start making some good bits to throw onto some of these old models :)

Geat job of rescuing this wonderful model. I have one as well, that I am now thinking of re-doing in a similar paint scheme as what you just completed. I have noticed that you do a lot of "edge highlighting" (and you do a very thorough and good job of it), but have you ever tried dry brushing? If so, what made you choose edge highlighting over dry brushing to achieve similar effects?
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I always come to that point and think, I could just drybrush this, and in a lot of cases, that’s a perfectly valid way to go. Personally, I prefer the look of edge highlighting, especially in cases like this where the details are quite large, but if I was doing 20 of these at a time, I would opt for drybrushing 100%. I think it comes down to how much time you want to spend on a particular model. If it’s an hq unit, then edging everything is going to look a little more purposeful and come out a little nicer, for cannon fodder, they won’t be on the table long enough to notice, so id opt for drybrushing. It’s all really personal preference though :) I hope that answers your question!
