When my mom died, I found she had a big jar of buttons, which I now have. Interesting buttons, undoubtedly!💖 When I was a little girl, I played with buttons. Lined them up in rows like a classroom and placed a large button at the front. Those were my students!🤩

Those last dark mother of pearl or abalone buttons are awesome I saw a couple of the revolutionary War Era buttons with big hoop on back. Cool😅

On the back of the button, the part that holds it to the shirt is called the shank

You can also use 409 cleaner to test for Bakelite. Dip the head of a Q-tip into the 409 and wipe possible Bakelite it it turns yellow it’s Bakelite.

The darker gray shell buttons are from abalone shell. Do you ever see a rich iridescent (multicolor like oil on an oil slick) sea shell button? I found to very large ones years ago and have never found another.

No they come from a certain area of the Pacfic waters the shell is dark. Abalone are pinkish and the most beautiful imo also rareist of mop
