I understand the reserve list and maintaining it seems like a good idea. However MTG is a game that is meant to be played and I am all for reprinting the reserve list cards with different titles/arts/flavors etc in a meaningfully different way so the reserve list cards will still hold value but make the cards usable in games. I get that secondary market value is important but nobody is bringing cards worth thousands of dollars down to their LGS for commander night, there needs to be cheap versions that can be used in play or WoTC needs to officially permit the use of proxies in official events

This is what proxy's are for. I think all card games should have a reserved list. I think you should have to invest into cards if you want to play them officially like any other card. I think they should be banned just because they're too strong, but it would hurt the resell value of the original by a lot. Black lotus would tank at a minimum of 50% of its value, and that's just not fair to the people who invested 10s of thousands into obtaining just 1. So if you want to play what is effectively a prize card thats banned anyways is just do a proxy. You get what you want functionally, and everyone who has the lotus keeps their value. You shouldn't just get a reprinted black lotus, moxes, or cards that a clearly broken for pennies on the dollar when its clearly a extremely expensive card, and there's too many people that want something for nothing

@@NFiniteCombos Artificially pricing out most of your player base from the most powerful cards makes the game pay to win. We don't tolerate this in any other kind of game. If you refuse to reprint the cards even as a different card therefore keeping the reserved cards value you price out a large majority of players from official play who can't afford to spend nice used car money on cardboard. If they are so powerful they would be banned if not for their reserve list status/secondary market value than the cards they do print need to be able to match it power wise. If WoTC won't print equivalent power cards they should allow the use of proxies in tournament play. Even if they did something where they print their own not for sale version for use only at local tournaments that players aren't allowed to take home that would work too

Screw the reserve this list. Was an over correction and as bad of a mistake as the one it attempted to fix. People who look at magic as an investment instead of a game will disagree, but screw them too.

I am on the fence. Some of the RL cards are janky and weird and don't work in today's game, and some are straight up crap, won't matter if reprinted. @@BensonMTG They need to do away with this "retro-border" garbage in every set and and print reserved list cards exclusively with the new borders so there's no confusion as to whether it's a valuable vintage treasure or a modern game piece and just fuckin set a price to purchase all singles online since Secret Lair exists for them to print money anyway. How many times has Yugioh reprinted Dark Magician? My first editions are still valuable and appreciating no matter how many times they reprint it. Gatekeeping is stupid. FIgure out a way to preserve old value, and stop dancing around the bush with Secret Lair and sell singles as well.

What is left for WotC to reprint into the dirt for value anymore? The non-RL cards have pretty much been milked into the dirt. Anything that pops up over $50 bucks either gets reprinted these days into special guest slots, list cards, or secret lairs. Mana crypt is probably one of the most expensive non-RL cards left besides some niche portal cards that haven't been completely reprinted into the dirt yet and they are likely next. The RL was a mistake in hindsight, but an understandable one.

I see the RL has a sort of guardrails system. Some old cards are whack, just break the game and are unwieldy. I’m hoping they reprint Portal Three Kingdoms, speaking or portal

This is dramatically different. Any creature vs X cost creature. You can finagle your way into any creature sure, but this is a 3 cost enchantment that gets everything. Lets not pretend its the same level of power creep at all

Okay, so, the main reason they did this was solely to try to fix broken cards, and maybe give a niche mechanic more love. Looking at Necrodominance (Which, is just a "fixed" but not really Necropotence), they want to try to revive favorites from back when, and giving them new homes. In terms of modern, Chthonian Nightmares is a LOT harder to loop or wtv than Reoccurring Nightmares is, especially when you slap what still can be considered a niche mechanic onto it. Little bit harder to loop, but can be done in the right deck for wtv reason. People just need to get over the idea of "Reserve List this, Reserve List that" and understand that they're trying to fix cards and bring people back into the game. Slightly harder to loop, harder to break, but still enough powercreep to show it's head, since that's what horzion sets were made to do, is warp the format.

People get worked up over nothing. R&D most likely put this into their files as a starting off point. The process of remixing starts with the original track. As for the RL: other card games without an RL still have valuable cards. I am in favour of a kind of masterpiece RL like they did with Kaladesh. Serialized cards are also a good way to create investment pieces for those who want them going forward.

No way this was a 'slip of the mind' - it's too close and cheeky to Recurring Nightmare, an infamously broken card, to be anything but intentional. Same with how Necrodominance is close to Necropotence. This one just caused some backlash among collectors and they couldn't say it was intentional.

Fair point. I do like the RL for exactly that, some collectability. But some stuff on the RL would do the game good reprinted. Please like and sub, I am writing up a script for Pros and cons or reprinting the RL.

@BensonMTG Collectability is one of the worst arguments for the RL. Buy gold or jewelery instead. It literally makes the game worse. And collectors need to know that at the end of the day, things that make the game worse are things that will in the end kill the value of their precious cardboard. Because if the game ever dies, then their cards will be worthless. The only reasonable argument for some cards in the RL is that some cards are overpowered like Moxes and Black Lotus, but those should then be banned so the need for players to have it in their deck goes away.

The reserved list is garbage, and people banking their long term financial strategy on game pieces is ridiculous. It's just a petty game that the rich get to impose on the less fortunate who would actually use the cards for their originally intended purpose. The reserved list deserves to die so people can actually enjoy those cards.
