I am so glad to see grappling with these questions and not sweeping them away with macho bravado. With kids- the grappling never stops.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not that Kai is my inspiration for surfing… in a way living. I picked up surfing honestly a couple months back and have been out 3-4 days a week for hours, with only knowledge from Kai , Nathan , Jon , sometimes Koa but I’d be out there for hours on end just to get a release from my normal life, im in the pre hospital medical field and it’s emotionally taxing. Surfing is the only thing at 26 I’ve felt like a child learning to walk all over again. The drive kai has is the reason I’m charging 6 foot waves only 2 months into learning on my own. Kai talks about the art of not looking back so many times without even saying it. He’s a young lion charging buffalos without a pack. I thank you for bringing me out of dark times dude I’m not a kook. I learned all my etiquette from the north shore boys and implant it in my life. I give ways more than I’ve ever taken. It’s better that way. I’m just planning on slamming a 15 foot wave in the next 5 years and being the first black person in San Diego to do so. I’ve always felt outcasted here too especially on the water. But I have a long way to go

Hell yeah man! Get after it 🙌 Re "I don’t know if it’s a good thing or not that Kai is my inspiration for surfing" Who Cares!!! If you're pre med you're smart enough to know that our perception dominates our reality and you're already on your way out of dark times so keep at it. Doing a lot more than most as it is!!!

If I can tell you one thing, just don't stop. You have no idea where these waves may take you with your fantastic attitude. Be open, be teachable, and be one with the water. These mentors that you have are the very best in the sport, soak up as much as you can. And every day do something, even if it's minute, that you didn't think you could do. Then that day do it again. Im a 66 year old woman who used to surf in so cal in the 70s and I had to literally fight for every wave. It made me mad at the time, but it made me so much better at surfing and at life. I hope you do magical things, I hoping and praying for you to have safe and glorious days ahead on the water, with the best barrels in the world! Just don't give up, don't stop! Much love - Robin ❤
