This job I cut a swale around the customers house to divert water away from the house. The yard was sloped right to the back of the house and they were getting water in their crawlspace. I cut about a 250' long swale around the back of the house and a small swale out the front. I cut about 8 loads of material out of the swale, then prepped the area for hydroseed. I also brought in a load of base rock and freshened the driveway up. Was excited to also try a harley rake on this job and do a side by side comparison with it and the preparator. To me they both have their place but if you can only get one attachment I would recommend the harley rake. It seems to do a better job of loosening up the existing soil and grass, it also has a really nice finish when you get the hang of it. The preparator is more of a final pass attachment it has a slightly better finish to it but does not tear up the grass or the hard packed ground as well. It was fun to have both on the job and I do plan on purchasing a harley rake later this year. All in all the project came out nice and the customer was very happy. I plan to get back to do a follow up and hopefully catch it raining to see how it drains. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #FFCPreparator #Harleyrake

I own a Harley rake for excavating not landscaping and its a tool we cant live without. The other one you had can do a better job of removing rock, but the Harley rake has so many more uses. It does take time to get the hang of it. Nice job hopefully you get the water to flow correctly. Why on earth didn’t they build that house at least a foot higher.

I just had someone ask me about a Harley rake on one of my videos and I've never even used one so I'll point them to this video. I've got a good feel for how they work now. Look at an ATI Preseeder, with your operating methods and being a one man show I think you would like the results. The Harley rake is more forgiving of poor operators but I would take a Preseeder anyday over a Harley rake. I have a 3 point tractor mounted Preseeder and love the finish it leaves, would like to have a penny for every pound of rocks I have raked off! I used a tiller or tooth bucket to loosen sod and hard ground first. Works great on driveways also! Like the videos, thanks.

One tip for the Harley Rake. Only use it in forward motion. Set your float and adjust depth using curl in or out. After you get used to it you will see why you only want to go forward with a Harley Rake. Just my two cents..👍🏼

Question from a guy with no experience with either attachment but am in the market. How would you get a non compacted seed bed going forward? Wouldn't you always have compaction from the tracks? How would you deal with that for final prep?
@eliteearthworksllc
@eliteearthworksllc 2 жыл бұрын
I use my tooth bucket for everything including the final grade. I get it where I’m happy with the grade then use the preparator going backwards to finish out the tracks marks. The tracks compact the soil a little bit but not all that much. They are designed to have low ground pressure so it’s not really enough to hurt the seed bed plus when you start watering it it softens up the ground
@solidblue7

Very good looking job. I think the job will work as you designed it. You had a .7% fall on 250' and a 6" gravity sewer line for a city's sewer collection system can be put in as flat as .6% fall (8" pipe can be as flat as .4% due to larger diameter). BUT you have a very wide swale and NO constrictive pipe diameters. Well done in my opinion.

Its tough to work with an area with limited slope. I dont know why contractors always build a house so close to the ground except for its a cost issue. One more line of block around a house wouldn't be catastrophic to their bottom line but they just don't seem to care about the issues a house too low causes after they've sold the house. You made it look good though. Hopefully you've cured the water issues. Good job man.

Nice of you to grace our Sunday with a new one! Hope you didn't give up the "4th" for this video on the 5th. Thanks anyway. Nice job on this 'headache'. I say that cuz it has many 'close tolerance' variables. Can really see the swale when you got down with the camera. Thanks for the great info.. I have an RV pad to put in next week for some friends. I have HR rented, I am thinking 6" of crusher run in a few lifts, run the bucket over it after it is tailgated, then HR and rented compactor.. After that I am wondering if that is best time for the 1&1/2" clean rock and compact that as well.. Anyone have input... or something I have missed? Should I use fabric to separate the dirt from crusher run? I dug out 2 small elm trees about 6 weeks ago and did a backfill and compacted with the SVL 75, its pretty tight now. 50 x 80 approx. size. thanks in advance...

What bucket do you have on your 150? i have a 2015 TL8 with a virnig 72 smooth cutting edge. I try to back drag with the loader arms all the way down and the bottom of the bucket flat. It always seems like i end up with a big pile behind the bucket or in wetter material it digs the tracks in. I know the cutting edge sticks down a little and maybe thats part of it since that probably keeps the bucket from truly being flat. Maybe i need to adjust the loader arm stops or just practice more. Im a newer operator and trying to learn off guys like you and letsdig18. looking though for a new toothed bucket.

It’s an 84” virnig. They build all the buckets for Tak now. I would say it just takes practice, I don’t set mine all the way down when I backdrag. It’s a few inches above the stops you just have to feel it as you are backing up.

Couldn’t you just have taken the downspouts out 10’ or so away from the house and into a pop up in the yard so it would run into your new swale?

I think the builder tried to put the yard in to save some money but yeah I agree you think they could get it closer. I bought the preparator in 2011 cause that’s what I ran before when I worked a few summer for a utility contractor cleaning up trenches from the plow. I plan on adding a harley rake later this year. Appreciate you watching

Sad that the builder did not raise the ground a few feet to get this house out of the water, but at least this is a huge blank canvas with lots of space to grade and divert the water flow. And maybe at the end of this, there will be some money left in the homeowner's budget to buy that lonely tree in the front yard a friend to stick in the ground next to it. It's looking a little sad all alone there in this wide open field.

Brandon, how would that grader blade attachment dirt perfect has do on a job like that removing the grass etc along with high spots, what you are using seems to be doing ok with it though, but I suppose it’s horses for coarses on some jobs, and it’s all looking good now

Yeah that would probably have worked here with all the space but I think the harley rake would be a better overall choice with being able to loosen the soil up instead of just scrapping it off. I could see areas where the grader attachment would be handy. Appreciate you watching

Looks very nice! I was wandering, about how many hours did you have in the dirt work? Did it seem like the harley rake sped up the process at all? Also, what are your thoughts on the green pop up drain tile emitter's? I have never used them and have always just daylighted the drain tile. There just isn't much to work with on this yard as far as drain tile is concerned.
@eliteearthworksllc
@eliteearthworksllc 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I had around 20 hours in the dirt and yes the harley rake speed things up with being able to remove the grass and loosen the soil up. Definitely a great attachment. I’m not a huge fan of the pop ups because it never fails the grass either grows over the pop up. Or it gets knocked off and fills the pipe with dirt and grass and the gutter gets backed up. In some situations you have to use but I try to avoid them. Appreciate you watching

I've been doing some research and think I would like a power rake with a hydraulic motor, adjustable guage wheels so that you can cut a swale and hydraulic angle. Do you have any idea which way you may go?
@eliteearthworksllc
@eliteearthworksllc 4 жыл бұрын
I already own the preparator but I do plan on getting harley rake. The two seem like a great combination but if I had to get one I would go for the harley rake it seems to be the best bang for your buck. It breaks up existing grass and hard packed ground better than the preparator. The preparator is more of a final pass attachment. The harley rake worked great on the front yard swale of this job and I never had to put the bucket on. Hopefully that helps and I appreciate you watching

Elite Earthworks LLC yeah I think it’s the Rockhound landscape rake. Similar to the preparator you used but it’s chain driven. Maybe it takes time and practice to operate
