I feel like overworking doctors to the point of exhaustion isn’t the best way to deliver healthcare.

@@smokerx6291Residents basically get paid minimum wage. So that’s not a lot of money. Also I doubt working 100 hours a week will make anyone happy whether they barely make minimum wage or make 6 figures a year.

I had the smallest window into what resident life was like as a PA student during my rotations. I was on my surgery rotation working 104 hours a week on average for 6 weeks. It was the WORST. All I could think about was thank goodness I wasn’t a med student because they had to do that rotation twice!!! I barely made it through that cycle once. The hours are brutal, quality of life is nothing. I come from a great family, had a wonderful boyfriend who is now my husband but oh my gosh that period of time was so HARD. Feels like PTSD when I think about it. Now I’m out working as a Physician Assistant and life is so so so much better, but gosh the amount of training hours and the type of training we go through needs to change so I am beyond thankful when I see providers like you raising awareness.

I'm not sure if you'll see this but I feel like you're the older sister that I never had. I've been watching your content since you started medical school and have watched every video since and I will continue to watch your content because you are an amazing human being and an unbelievable inspiration. I have a pretty similar story/path as you (doing 6 years for bachelors, starting at community college, being first gen, etc) and I can't express to you how motivating it is to see someone with a similar background doing the thing you want to do. I think I've always had the inklings and desire to go into medicine but I never really considered it since I believed the "that's just not what my family does" type of stuff for most of my life but you honestly helped me see past that and realize that if medicine is what I am being called to do, then I can and should pursue that. A KZbin comment cannot accurately represent just how much I genuinely appreciate the work that you do, both as an OB/GYN but also as a content creator; you are positively impacting people's lives in both fields and that is something you should be extremely proud of and I hope you think of that on those rough residency days when you're questioning why you're still doing this. I'll be taking the MCAT early next year (around April) and hope to apply the following spring - when (not if) I get into medical school, you'll be part of the reason why

I honestly don’t think you complain enough, your schedule is INSANE!! 😭😭. I really wish they treated healthcare workers better, and in turn I reckon more patients would have less birth trauma as well. These hours seem excessive and not super safe but I also see you’re doing the best you can. Hopefully big changes come soon for the system , but as always we’re all so so proud of you and your journey. Hope you’re getting rest❤❤❤

Being in medicine in the States sounds stressful. I feel like I relate even though I'm a medical officer intern fresh from med school We get residents that come here from the US, I think from Penn, maybe not sure. And what they describe to us sounds so other worldly. Not only are there much more resources but more staff as well. I didn't know phlebotomists were a thing cause as a medical student, you're everything from the porter to the doctor 😂. By entry to residency, they expect you to be able to be able to perform a C- section independently cause it's a medical officer procedure. Fortunately, the hospitals where residents train (the referral ones) have consultants/specialists so the residents do get assistance. Watching your videos makes me want to practice there, cause it seems you have great support from your senior staff. A lot of senior staff here aren't so supportive. Anyway never mind my mini vent, great video Rachel ❤.

Is it true that there are many women in the US that decides to get a c-section even though it isn't medically adviced? In my country (Norway) we're not allowed to automatically choose to have a c-section. It has to be a medically reason for a women to get it. Thanks for your videos! I love them. Hugs all the way from Norway.
