What I really like about RE2 was that they explained why there were puzzles if you read the correspondence between various members of the police department. People frequently complain about the chief's strange portraits, etc... Which keep being brought into the station and many start thinking the chief was going crazy.

P.S. Don't forget about Code Veronica...aka the last true Resident Evil. (I guess you could make this argument with Zero also) While RE4 was great and RE5 was descent...the originals will always be king. Now hopefully they don't fuck up the RE2 remake...but it's highly doubtful they'll use pre-rendered backgrounds, which is honestly a bummer. Because the amount of detail in these environments was staggering in RE2 & 3. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to go play the RE1 remake for Halloween!
@caboose3099 жыл бұрын
+Eric Durant while i do enjoy the first three i can honestly say that i think RE4 is vastly superior. they did away with some extremely frustrating elements and managed to keep the horror atmosphere for the majority of the game. yeah the ending was more like an action movie but to me at least it still felt good and didn't detract from the earlier parts of the game. Putting RE5 during the day was fucking stupid and really really doesn't work with the horror atmosphere they were trying to go for and RE6 just went full on action movie. Actually if you haven't tried them then you should try RE Revelations and Revelations 2 because they seriously got the atmosphere right. they are tense and while short they don't overstay their welcome.
@caboose3099 жыл бұрын
+blitzstrk it had the best item management of them all IMO and btw if RE4 didn't scare you then how the hell did RE 1 scare you. Having played both pretty recently again I can see how neither are really that scary and IMO at least RE4 had the fucking terrifying regenerators. RE 1 didn't have really anything even remotely scary besides a few jumpscares. The atmosphere really wasn't there. Lol when a god damn lighter takes up the same amount of space as a fucking rocket launcher you know we got issues. Plus any dialogue immediately takes you out of it. Don't get me wrong I love the originals but I think a lot of people who thought they were scarier first played them when they were young.
@ablationer8 жыл бұрын
The problem with RE4 is that this type of camera ruins any possible chance to get ambushed, except from dead angles like behind or something. Despite the technical improvement that comes with the shoulder cam, it absolutely shatters the atmosphere and you really need to step your game up to make up for it (Like in Dead Space for example) Regenerators were the only scary enemy type in RE4 whatsoever, every other kind was pretty mundane, brown, and spanish. Some of the special enemies and bosses were pretty interesting, but otherwise the vibe just wasn't there.
@MichaelPhillips-jw4bj6 жыл бұрын
dude your comparing re1 to game that was made years later on better hardware. maybe if you compared remake on the cube vs re4 then thats fair. even then coming at it from a modern perspective is unfair. +funkykriz21 Not every boss. Flame rounds just work really well against Birkin. Like I said, they stun lock him, so if you have a large amount, all you have to do is aim and fire until he's dead, and you wont take any damage...as long as you are careful and know what your doing. Acid rounds do more damage against him, but they don't stun him.

Leon gets weapon upgrades though. An upgraded shotgun is more than enough to take out Birkin phase 2 in under 10 shots. You do have to be careful because the recoil animation takes as much time as Birkin's stun animation, but with proper positioning you can end the fight in as few as 7-8 shots. Then you get the upgraded magnum, and this beast can end the first phase of the Birkin 3 fight in 3 shots. Not even joking.

The game is good and I gladly replay it. But the graphics are old, so it won't do for a rerelease. It must be made a new, like it was the case with REmake. Same gameplay, but it looks different and sounds different. RE0's port improved the graphics to the point it almost was a remake of its own. I want CV to get the same treatement. Just because it looks good enough for you doesn't mean it looks good for todays standards. I want the change be mostly for the character models, the dialogue and new cutscenes. Decorative changes.

As much as I liked this very thought-out review, one main thing bugged me. You were making it seem like Mr X only ever showed up during Claire's campaign, even though you already stated about the A & B scenario. For example, through out the whole video you were making it seem like the ''B'' scenario only effected your Claire play-through, basically stating that you clearly played as Leon first, and then Claire, not the other way around. Try a new game as Claire (A) and then try the B game as Leon and you'll notice a decent amount of difference in gameplay in story. But a fantastic review, keep it up!

A pleasantly surprising video. You gave a very good synopsis of each game. I never felt the story in the first game was that good though, and I'm pretty sure Oswell E. Spencer wasn't even introduced to the story until Code Veronica. The second game probably has the best story in the series, but the series never really makes it clear which ending is canon. It seems to be that a combination of both is the true canon. I sort of have a soft spot for the first game, because it was the first in the series I've played, and it offers some of the most memorable gaming moments I've experienced, but RE 2 is indeed the best out of the 3. Nemesis is the worst, but it does have the best ending in the series. I enjoyed your conclusion very much. The series has a lot of flaws, but they're not that relevant in the grand scheme of things.

I have just got into this series not more than 3 weeks ago and man was I living under a fat ass rock. This is perhaps one of the best video game franchises in my gaming life. I hate the modern day gaming industries and I needed something new and fresh to play and this was on the cards for me.I heard about this game back in the day but I didn't think I would get into it and man was I a fool.

Would love to see a similar vid focusing on Code Veronica, 0 and 4. These games were fantastic. The series after 4 did go to shit with 5 (not terrible but not RE) and 6 was atrocious but Revelations did bring the atmosphere back though its a little too actiony. I also enjoyed the two Wii lightgun style games. Not had a chance to play Revelations 2 yet but it sounds like Capcom are listening to us for the 7th game..

i loved the original resident evil because of how cheesy the acting was and how gory it was compared to the remake. when Joseph found Forests hand in tall grass. the remake should have been just a gruesome or included some of the stuff from the prototype like having messages written blood on the walls. i just hope they don't ruin the resident evil 2 remake

It's not Claire's scenario that is harder it's scenario B. There are two scenarios in Resident evil 2, scenario A and B. Scenario A is easy, scenario B is much harder. You can actually play the other way around, where Leon is getting haunted by Mr. X and Leon kills him with the bazooka, at their last confrontation.
@VidarUlv8 жыл бұрын
+John Despo Exactly. I was really surprised he somehow missed that in the video here. You get to fight the big guy as Leon in his scenario B as well.
@ablationer8 жыл бұрын
In fact, from what I've read, that's how the game is meant to be played. Leon gets the G-virus from Ada and that's why Mr.X is tracking him down. Sherry having the G-virus inside her pendant in scenario B was just a way to make it work, but it's not the intended canon.

with that said Claire also gets different ammo for her grenade launcher each ammunition makes it feel like a different weapon and Leon's weapon upgrades don't feel quite as effective against William Birkin's upgrades

There's almost no ammo pickups for the Bow Gun. I think there's only 2 in the whole game for Claire. One in the Evidence Room and one later in the Weapon Storage Room. Compare that to over a dozen shotgun shell pickups. Claire may have better weapons, but she really gets shafted on ammo. And Leon gets a special flamethrower in the Lab specifically for the Ivys, while Claire has to waste grenade shells on them because nothing else does worthwhile damage.

When we first got the games, me and a pal used to play religiously, hot seating until a save room. I remember one night during a new year's party we played RE3 all night. Good times were had. I liked RE2 the best because it had 2 characters and more replayability than all the 3 combined. Also it had a Nemesis type enemy that was a pain in the ass. But i remember i was more scared of the dogs than anything else. There was just something about those dogs that bothered me terribly. Maybe because they had no skin. Great review mate and great games. As always you put the dot on the proverbial "i" in your reviews.

I think it's a feeling of disappointment that causes the negativity. After the initial fanboy pop people started to realize it wasn't a worthy enough successor to RE4's greatness. Then the jokes and memes started as people made fun of Sheva's incompetent AI, the racist tribal stereotypes, and Chris's newfound steroid addiction. Once that ended the resentment set in, and now people shit on the game just for the sake of it.

@Anomaly1886 жыл бұрын
160sharp I know that, but I remember RE5's perceived 'racism' being used in a lot of jokes and a news story shortly after the game released. I always chalked it up to the Japanese not knowing any better because even today Japan is very culturally insulated from the rest of the world.

The reason for the elaborate puzzles in re2 is because chief irons deliberately hid keys and ammo around the station because he was a psychopath who had to get rid of the survivors/witnesses because he enjoyed and because umbrella ordered him to. It's all in the files that u can find throughout the game
@CounterLife8 жыл бұрын

Great retrospective! I like that you tried to give each title its fair shake while touching on a majority of the aspects of each title that fans are going to recognize. RE3 was my personal favorite; had the tightest gameplay with difficulty that presented a tall gate to very rewarding ways to implement the upgraded moveset. I also thought tonally RE3 was the most consistent and refined thematically, with the cutscenes and especially that music being uber 90s, Harry Gregson Williams-esque (reminds me a lot of The Rock). There's also a way to exploit the "RNG". The game doesn't really randomize enemy placement but instead ties variable to inputs from the player. For example, the magnum and grenade launcher can be spawned with 100% reliability if you take the same path to the police station while interacting with the same items. Enemy spawns function similarly.

Just finished Resident Evil HD remaster today. It's a good game definitely and an important game in history. But god dam can it be clunky and confusing.
@Razhork8 жыл бұрын
The Resident Evil franchise has had the most influence over my gaming experience. The first time I was introduced to a Resident Evil was when I was 8 years old and my father had bought my elder brother a bunch of PS1 titles including Resident Evil 3. Watching my elder brother play - and subsequently playing it myself was absolutely horrifying to me. I think having experienced the game at such a young age has skewed the way I look at RE3 in particular, as I can't imagine a more terrifying monster than Nemesis. Literally walking through a hallway and suddenly hear the words; "S.T.A.R.S" induced such dread to me as a child. Back then I wasn't running away from him due to any real good decision making, it was simply because he scared the shit out of me. It's the RE game I have the fondest memories of, and that is undoubtedly because I was stupid enough to play it at such a young age, but god damn if RE1, RE2 and RE:Remake aren't amazing, if not objectively better in some fashion. I think I'd go as far as to say RE:Remake is probably the best old school RE game thus far, and I'm both excited to no ends, and terrified to no ends by the announcement of a RE2:Remake. Simply because RE2 was such an amazing game, and the fact that Hideki Kamiya & Shinji Mikami are no longer with Capcom to help realize this game's full potential. God, Capcom, please make RE2:Remake as good; if not better than the RE1:Remake.

+Dan Vincent RE is vastly superior to it and I wanted to focus on RE not other games.
@danvincent77179 жыл бұрын
+Gggmanlives fair enough, but you should give credit where it's due. RE owes alot to the original Alone in the dark. Yeah RE is much better , but it came out four years after Alone 1. Japanese are famous for ripping off ideas and not giving credit.
@skippymurphy9 жыл бұрын
+Dan Vincent Actually Resident Evil is a spiritual successor to a game from 1989 called Sweet Home also made by Capcom. Japanese studios practically made the industry what it is today, the West needed to be shown how to make games for a long time my friend.
@danvincent77179 жыл бұрын
+skippymurphy North Americans invented video games, and the very first survival horror game technically was Haunted house for the Atari 2600. So yeah, Japan owes us some credit. I was talking about the game play style and use of fixed camera angles RE copied from Alone in the Dark.
@skippymurphy9 жыл бұрын
Yeah sure, no arguing RE used those camera angles and style of play but I was just pointing out to you the fact that Capcom had already set the foundations in 1989. Also yes it's true Video Games were birthed in the US, but make no mistake the Japanese showed you and others in the world how to actually take advantage of the medium.
