I like when the final area is linear since it's like it's wrapping up the story. You don't know what's going on in the mansion parts of the game so the gameplay reflects that by being confusing and maze-like, but becoming more clearer and clearer as you get the layout of the mansion and figure out what's going on. By the time you're in the lab you know what's going on, so the gameplay is linear to reflect that.

Huh, thats actually a really interesting way to tie in the emotions of the player, the narrative of the game and the players understanding of its mechanics as the game progresses. One of my favourite things about survival horror is conquering the initial terror and confusion of the first few hours and subsequently re-gaining a sense of control of the situation. Its intriguing to consider the game design reflecting this as well.

I don't know how much Raid Mode you played, but Ghost Ship is the entire Queen Zenobia in one raid mode mission- that you have to S rank and get Trinity Bonus on to fully clear. That shit right there is by far the best interconnected environment gameplay with a clear fun/hard goal to get!

I also miss a lot of the dialogue between Leon and Claire, as well as the Chief Irons fight. They could have done more, especially when separating Mr. X. I remember playing it like "Why is he here now??" Also, the ending to RE2 is way better on PS1. That soundtrack is perfection.

I appreciate your thoughts on the Resident Evil 2 Remake. The only two problems I have with this game is Mr. X's Super Tyrant Transformation and The Costumes. I would've Loved a boss battle against Mr. X in the lava stage like it was in The Darkside Chronicles. His super tyrant form in this game was okay but it would've been Perfect if he Fully Transformed instead of his right arm being on fire. And I wished Capcom would've included Claire's blue fire logo motorcycle costume and Leon's tank top shirt & camo pants with his cap being backward with him pointing his pistol with one hand. Not only that but Claire's classic costume in this remake removed her black arm sleeves, black long gloves and her pink vest collar sticking out. Claire's classic costume in this game needed those things. All those mechanics for this Remake would've made this game A True Masterpiece.

First you always know were they will appear; second they 1-hit kill you which makes them a bit frustrating imo (unless you figure that weird timing); and third even if you die there's always a checkpoint at the start of their room so there's not much of a setback and no tension for me. I would prefer having them appear unpredictably, no checkpoints if they kill you to build that tension, but no 1-hit kills either. i find it curious how some "old" fans treat those who prefer the remake over the original as not hardcore enough or whatever when the remake is like ten times harder than the og (both in normal difficulty since the og doesnt have hardcore). i absolutely love both and i could not make a case on which is better, they are so different yet so similar in some regard. for me, REmake makes RE1 kinda irrelevant and not worthy but the RE2make feels like it can compliment the original even tho being its own thing.

@GinraiPrime666
@GinraiPrime666 Жыл бұрын
In my experience its alittle bit of both. Yes there are some older RE fans who act like that but I would say most of us and people I know and have interacted with, mostly would like newer players to at least give the older games a try and not just dismiss them outright. In recent years I would say a good chunk of new players have and most of them have enjoyed the older titles which is a win-win, that said I would say there's equally more newer fans who do dismiss the older games and by extension the older fans as being "outdated" or being "blinded by nostalgia". Enjoying the newer games is fine but that shouldn't mean you completely dismiss everything that came before. You're right in that RE2make can compliment the OG RE2 instead of replacing it, personally speaking I enjoyed the gameplay of RE2make but it felt lacking in some ways and the cuts like the zapping system, the different A/B Scenarios (the things that made the OG RE2 stand out from the others) ultimately make the game feel lesser to me.
@facuuaf
@facuuaf 2 жыл бұрын
The whole A/B scenario isn't just a pet peeve, it's a HUGE game breaking mistake. The remake's story literally doesn't make sense, every character fights G3, Mr. X is mauled by Birkin but then still shows up, etc. The timeline is broken.

Then you also had the same gripe with the re1remake and re1 original?
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrpussinboots4252 That specific criticism would not really be applicable to RE1, since both Chris and Jill’s campaigns were at least treated like self-contained scenarios that offer their own complete narrative, even if none of them can tell the canon story. Unlike RE2, both versions of RE1 let players encounter all of the rooms and boss fights across a single playthrough, as either Chris or Jill. Within the context of each RE1 campaign’s plot, the opposite protagonist is shown to be locked up the whole time, and their unique characters (Barry and Rebecca) also do not appear at the end. This creates no gaps or loose ends that would require an additional campaign to fill in.
@mrpussinboots4252
@mrpussinboots4252 2 жыл бұрын
@@markcobuzzi826 Which is hypocritical if the remakes for RE1 and RE2 follow the same story beats and narrative storytelling. All four campaigns are self contained. If you're going to critique one for not implementing two separate diverse campaigns then surely you cant fault RE2 for following the same approach. There is gaps, on one campaign ( jill ) she can only save Barry and Chris respectively with no room for rebecca which is inaccurate canon wise. Re2 remake everyone escapes regardless of which campaign you select. The self contained stories work far better for the RE2 for this sole reason.
@markcobuzzi826
@markcobuzzi826 2 жыл бұрын
@@mrpussinboots4252 Most of your reply is talking about how RE1’s campaigns do not follow the accepted canon, which something I already addressed by explicitly stating “even if none of them can tell the canon story”. My comment was about how RE1’s campaigns can at least function as non-canon “what-if” scenarios that still provide their own complete narrative in a vacuum (albeit not the complete canon narrative). Namely, they work decently as “what if Barry was killed by the dogs and never made it to the mansion, while Jill got imprisoned early on” and “what if Rebecca was never among Bravo Team’s surviving members in the mansion and Chris got imprisoned early on”. I did not exactly want to shove multiple paragraphs into your face, so I am only typing this more detailed explanation of what I mean far below, in case you want read on yourself… “All four campaigns are self contained.” No, not exactly… at least not in the way that RE1’s campaigns are, mainly for these reasons: 1.) Whenever you play the First Run of either character in RE2 Remake, the final boss battle against G5 and the ending cutscene are entirely withheld from you. You can only get those by playing Second Run. But in RE1, you do get to face the final boss fight against the Tyrant and see an actual ending (albeit one of many non-canon endings), regardless of what campaign you choose to start with. That is one thing I mean by RE1’s campaigns being self-contained in the their own continuities. 2.) If all four campaigns are self-contained, implying that one can experience a full sequence of events without another campaign supplementing it, then why does William Birkin go from G3 to G5 in Leon’s campaigns? Either he just skips over his G4 stage for no reason, or the entire G4 battle had to happen entirely offscreen with Claire. If important parts of the narrative happen offscreen and require a separate campaign to be seen, that is not what I mean by “self-contained”. At least in RE2 Remake’s Claire campaigns, Mr. X gets eviscerated by William Birkin, providing a reason for his boss fight to be skipped over, which does not rely on a separate campaign to explain. 3.) Also in Leon’s campaigns, the scenarios end with Leon meeting Sherry Birkin. Because Sherry appears in the end, Leon’s scenarios establish that she is important, even within the continuity of his campaigns. Yet the only way for her character to be explained is to see one of Claire’s campaigns. RE1’s Barry and Rebecca respectively did not appear throughout Chris and Jill’s campaigns. But at least Barry was implied to be killed at the beginning (like Mr. X being prematurely killed by William Birkin), while Rebecca never appeared at all. So if the RE1’s campaigns were each experienced in a vacuum, there would pretty much be no loose ends that need to be explored, regarding Barry or Rebecca, unlike Sherry appearing at the end of Leon’s campaign. 4.) This is more from a gameplay perspective, rather than a story perspective. But both versions of RE2 gate off individual rooms on the maps or even entire levels, depending on whether you are playing as Leon/Claire or in First/Second Run. When a campaign outright gives the players no chances to explore certain areas presented to them, then that makes the campaign incomplete on its own. *And when a campaign is incomplete on its own, then the intended supplementary campaign should at least attempt to match up (while the original RE2 pretty much succeeds at this, the RE2 Remake fails).* That’s why I mentioned RE1 letting people play through every room and level in one go, with the only difference being what characters are involved and what advantages are available in doing so. In that department, RE1’s campaigns do not need any supplement.

@@markcobuzzi826 Writing huge blocks of text isnt going to persuade me to read on, quite the contrary. If you can't express your thoughts in a concise manner, move on. Besides, the vast proportion of what you said is a word salad. You're inventing justifications for how RE1 ran yet faulting RE2s approach which doesnt differ at all. Take your own advice... You're holding both games to different standards. You seemingly praise one yet pass the other of displaying poor narrative inconsistencies. As with RE1, the player decides which campaign is canon. you're pissy over the A and B scenarios not being fleshed out. Well fine, but at least also critique RE1 with the same breath. If you finish RE1 with chris, then you'll be curious as to where Barry ended up from the opening cinematic. Likewise with Jill with rebecca nowhere in sight. The rooms you access differs by one or two during RE2 which renders your argument weak and redundant. In Leon's, you meet the reporter in the cell then venture out to the back of the RPD into the gun shop which makes sense. With claire, you enter a room inaccessible for leon then transverse around the back of the gunshop which again makes complete sense. I wouldn't want to replicate Leon's campaign 100% because it simply isnt possible with ada/sherry segments and how they relate to the narrative standpoint. Although leon/claires campaigns are evidently 99% identical aside from where you input two puzzle pieces. As claire doesnt meet John it would be ridiculous for her to place the puzzle pieces where leon does and vice verse... you should applaud how RE2 implimented these slight adjustments to keep the campaign fresh while not taking away the choice of the player as to which campaign is accepted from a narrative view. RE2remake works fine as does RE1 as far as 'what ifs' are. It leaves it to the players imagination to decide what is or isnt canon. RE1 is the biggest culprit of inconsistent plotholes. You escape with 3 characters when 4 entered the mansion. At some point it forces the player to gloss over the ommited character one way or another. Cognitive dissonance isnt healthy. And your make belief scenarios are absurd.

I know for a fact 4 would have hooked me if I had played it, but we all know that it's essentially a completely different game. Something about the resource management, methodical gameplay, and slow, plodding progression immersed me in a way no game ever had before. Now I've played the original trilogy, Silent Hill 1-4, Fatal Frame, Amnesia the Bunker, and a bunch of other horror games that I've all loved, but this one will always be my favorite, perhapse my favorite game of all time in general. I'm loving it, but this is my first time playing a more "survival" leaning RE (i.e. not RE7 which is more horror) in about 10 years. So it took me some time getting used to item/ammo mgmt. I'm loving most of it, but some things seemed inconsistent between the plays, like zombies only once coming through doors on my Leon play, but do it all the time w/ Claire. But hey, nit picking. Also, I thought the Zap system in OG RE2 was more divisive? Not at the time of its release (which yeah, i think it was loved by the consensus iirc), but in retrospect? I know I've read/heard a decent chunk of ppl actually releaved it wasn't in the RE2make.

The fact that a on-rails, arcade shooter is a better retelling of the RE2 story than these remakes says a lot 😂 idk, I really enjoy the Umbrella & Darkside Chronicles retelling of these stories more than RE2/3R, especially DSC which got the on-rails formula so good. I still play Memories of a Lost City and enjoy it, just how I can play RE2 and still enjoy it. The lustre of the 2/3 remakes wore out real fast after I got over the better graphics and realised it’s a rather crappy retelling 🤷🏻‍♂️ we should be giving RE1R more praise than the praise ppl have given RE2/3R

I haven't played the og re2, having only gotten into RE recently, I tried RE1 remake, but couldn't get used to the camera and gameplay, I played and loved RE7, and am currently on my first run through Scenario B after just completing Scenario A today, and so far, my only real issue with it, since I don't have the perspective of the original, is that Scenario B doesn't feel like what the other person was doing while you were doing Scenario A, now I can see why, it would be much harder to work make work, but I feel like if things that you did in Scenario A had an effect in Scenario B it would feel much cooler, for example with the grenade launcher in Claire Scenario A, if when you went there in Scenario B as Leon, instead of being the shotgun, it was already empty, but maybe you could take the key card from it, and use it somewhere only Leon can access to get the shotgun, it would just feel more cohesive as opposed to just being a tweaked version of Scenario A

I played through the game last week & when I booted up. Claire's story after beating Leon's....yeah. I was extremely disappointed that a game that took me 7 hours to complete my first go with no walkthroughs, guides, or previous experience with RE titles at all, AND on top of that the other storyline is just the same thing with minor differences? Just the way the storyline played out it really sells you that the other one will be an entirely different experience. Still a great little game with small puzzle elements. I just really expected more content. If I would've paid $60 for it I'd feel completely ripped off. At least there are other optional stories to play through.

Others have said it, but the aspects left out that really identified the game as unique being taken out really hurt this game. The zapping system was great and the fact that you could see the path you left in your wake was really a great concept. The one thing I think about most though is the pursuer aspect that was only SLIGHTLY part of the second scenario in RE2 and then expanded upon quite well in RE3. If you go back to development you see them making Jack in VII and how he pursues you relentlessly. Then move onto 2 and now Mr. X has a much bigger part and pursues you relentlessly. Then onto 3 where Nemesis pursues you relentlessly. People have thought this time was the new rebirth of the RE games but I see it far more lackluster. 3 even took out components from it that made it special, like the fight of flight moments. VII was a return to form? I agree, until you leave the house, or even more specifically when you’ve dealt with Jack. As the game continues it gets more and more ridiculous culminating in the worst of what RE offers (yes, in my opinion). I have not played VIII yet, and I’ve heard that it brings new light to the unbelievably boring Mia and Ethan, but that it also devolves into a Call Of Duty game. What I always ask myself is, “what makes a resident evil game?” And I don’t always know honestly, but it’s not these first person shooters, nor is the likes of 5 or 6. I do know that one of the most beloved games in the series, number 4, sent us down this path and by the original director no less. I know I very much liked the 2 and 3 remakes, but can’t understand why they changed some fundamental ideas that made them so good in the first place. I even love the movies, as awful as they are, I just want more for Biohazard, and I think that means rebooting and figuring out what they want to make and what people want to play. Sorry this is so damn long, but I love these games and they frustrate me as well. Also, what happened to destroy the brain and they go down? They can take so many shots to the head it’s insane. As BP mentioned, they’re tricky as hell to hit so why not reward the shooter and blow up the head and end it? I shoot the legs now and run and it’s significantly less rewarding, but infinitely less aggravating.

@@Luna-pk7gz The Saw rip-off and the ship are fucking awful. 6 is bad, no doubt, but I find that because so many people believe 6 is bad, it just goes with your opinion. 7 being so lauded for excellence rubbed me wrong because it started off so good, then twisted into wet trash that was so boring. Like to me, go ridiculous and embrace it like Veronica, or go after small scale horror like the beginning of 7, but don’t do both.

As good as this game is - and it is! I still feel disappointment as it feels half a game content wise. There’s significantly less character stuff in the remake, having X in both scenarios instead of as a component to a second run makes him less special and both runs even more similar The narrative with William, Annette, and Shirley feels half cooked. Like this game is so close to being good, but needed more time in the oven. A remake should give you more, not less. The Resi one remake will always be the best.

The remake is ok, still prefer '98. The game was too dark, it was more annoyance than atmospheric, Just like Mr X after a short time.. I would have loved to have seen RPD rooms with lighting to see the nice job they did remaking them. When i played the demo, that's what i was hoping the fuse was for.... The beginning was also too short and uneventful. Moving and changing kendo to mid game did nothing to have any impact. Imo. Also the scenarios were awful compared to the original.

I never played the original games and my first games were RE7 and RE8. RE7 piqued my interest, but it was really uneven. Severely disappointed in RE8. It's like a really horrible version of the new RE4. But the RE2R really got me hooked on the franchise. Although it would have been nice to have more Leon/Claire interaction, I think of this game as a true masterpiece. Only after numerous plays can I see any weakness. It would have been nice if the last part of the Lab had been more fleshed out. You basically just run through it unopposed to get the pendant and load up for the G3 battle. It would have been cool if they had made two routes to get to the pendant, each with their own pros and cons, you could pick your best risk/reward option. But since they generously threw in all those cool bonus scenarios for free, I'm very content the way it is. Now my only challenge is figuring out if I like RE2R or RE4R better. They are so different, and yet both so awesome!

Almost a classic is, for damn sure. Had they just gone with the direction that was taken when developing the first remake, it would’ve been a masterpiece. The police station was the most enjoyable part of the game, but after that, it just all goes downhill, and I don't like how they change some of the details in the story and characters like Anette and Chief Iron(who was incredibly terrifying in the OG but in the remake he's just an asshole who turns out to be a killer). And finally, the lack of scenarios is a huge pet peeve for me.

Its super fun and scary especially in the first section at the police station. Eventually you escape and go to other sections and then its more like a shooter game because on easy you get a hell of a lot of ammo eventually which along with said locations which i’m not gonna spoil kinds takes away the “horror” atmosphere the police station section had. So the first few hours is scary and horror but eventually you shouldnt be intimidated by it. Its really fun but Mr X is stays scary tho lmao.
