As much as I loved the remake's visuals and gameplay, the lack of claire and Leon meetings really killed the story for me. They had so much opportunity to join up the overlap in a way that improved the characters relationship. Instead, they see each other at the start, and the end... and we expect to beleive that they are friends now? Like why did they remove the overlap that existed in the original game? Made me sad...
@chillproduction71424 жыл бұрын
I felt the same way when I played it. By the end of the original (as a 10 year old) I felt a relationship between them, be it running into each other in the office (or hall) then calling each other on the radio..by the end I felt like they were TRYING to escape together. At the end of the second one it was like..wait where’s Claire? We just sayin fuck her..? The dynamic between them was completely absent in the remake. The remakes of 2 and 3, for me, were actually quite disappointing. And I was so excited for RE2r.
@ufoash10662 жыл бұрын
Tbh I felt even in the original RE2, it was so Scooby-Doo-like that every time they're running into each other then they're like 'Ok let's split up again'. "Hey Claire, young girl with no training, it's my first day on the job but I'm taking it really seriously so I want to make sure I protect everybody. Okay so let's split up." "Hey Leon so I've got a kid with me now." "Okay let's split up again." "Hey Leon there are giant toxic plants and a mutant maniac running around now. Oh you wanna split up again?" Then later he insists on tough girl Ada staying with him because it's not safe alone lol. Like dude you just left a college student and a little kid to run around the outbreak on their own hahahaha

Your explanation about the keys is the perfect explanation as to why I find watching speedruns of RE1 more entertaining than 2. There's just so many different ways to tackle the mansion. You start off with a bunch of options. Whereas 2, you're stuck on the streets until you get to the station, then stuck on that particular route right at the beginning.
@WebstersYouTube7 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah, Claire A, Leon B! When I got my first PlayStation, it came with a used copy of Resi 2 that only had the Claire disc. Years later, when I found out there was a disc that made Leon playable, I flipped my shit in excitement.
@bigdaddykratos55146 жыл бұрын
SJ Webster, when I first played RE2 I also got it used, but the difference with my situation was the Leon disc was damaged, so every time I'd try to go through the door to get to the hallway that leads to the S.T.A.R.S. office right near the statue puzzle the screen would just stay black after the door animation. The music would still play but other than that the game was completely unresponsive after that. I wasn't able to play leon's campaign until years later when I got the GameCube version, which is probably my favorite version of the game, but that's besides the point. Lol

I can see where you're coming from, even agree with most of what you say. Resident Evil 2 gave me an incredible first impression. It was genuinely scary here and there especially when Mr. X showed up unexpectedly in the B scenario, and the storytelling was a strong improvement over the first game, which made playing the game feel more meaningful and engaging as I wanted to see these likeable characters survive through to the end. Admittedly though after four playthroughs, the game wears out its welcome. Aside from the A/B scenarios, the game doesn't do a whole lot different from the original game and the second half is surprisingly underwhelming. I didn't notice this on my first playthrough, but the game really starts to feel brief and rather anticlimactic once you get to the laboratory. There were also a few cheap angles so that a zombie could leach on to you with little issues which was a little annoying but nothing bad. Can I see why some may prefer the original? I guess so considering its less linear structure and stronger focus on survival gameplay, but I still hold 2 as the stronger entry. It doesn't feel as slow and clunky, I enjoy the story a lot more, and the difficulty is a lot more fair albeit a bit on the easy side. RE3: Nemesis is the best of the original trilogy though.
@Galaxy40k7 жыл бұрын
Excellent work here. In the first episode, I thought that you spent far too much time explaining all possible paths for the sake of completeness rather than as support for an argument. Here, you strike a perfect balance: you explain enough of the game to allow people who never played RE2 to follow along, but you don't bog the script down enough to where it detracts from the other areas. Awesome video!

RE2 is such a classic that I never really thought about its shortcomings much, especially in regards to its linearity. I give you kudos for making me think about that. I will say though that I did always dislike the sewer/lab parts of the game and wished that the police station had just been bigger.
@விஷ்ணு_கார்த்திக்7 жыл бұрын
FINALLY, someone who isn't blinded by nostalgia and can critique RE2 for once, its TOO much like the original RE1 and spencer mansion is 10,000 times better than RPD and overall RE2 is just too easy in terms of challenge, RE2 really could use an extra difficulty mode. Now i'm crossing my fingers for RE3 please do that poor game some justice.. THAT GAME IS AWESOME. And holy shit, you just pin-pointed the fact that the linear level design with action is something that started off as early as RE2! RE4 merely committed fully to that i guess.
@d-d-i7 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on this. RE2 is a masterpiece, but it's overhyped and overrated in certain terms. It is, in the end, simplified version of the original game with more focus on action, overall polish and character performances. And what else they could do in less than a year, when they needed to build it up from ground up after scrapping the original version ? Of course they had to use the similar form what the original used in order to save time to get it out to the market.
@விஷ்ணு_கார்த்திக்7 жыл бұрын
Dirty Deed Indeed The main problem i have with RPD Mansion is that it feels so not threatening. like they just forgot to make it creepy. Re 1.5's James Cameron blue light atmosphere was fine idk why they didn't go with it. Specner mansion was a ghoulish mansion straight out of a saw movie, its simply too unique to be replicated without being Inferior.
@d-d-i7 жыл бұрын
Again I agree with you haha. 1.5 may have looked a bit dull in places, but it was unfinished and lacked the detail and final polish of the final product. When you look some of the grey hallways and that stairwell, surely they won't put the game out like that, it would be dull to play. I always though that the outdoor area on the factory area looked insanely sinister, especially that place, where was something like 10x zombies lying on the ground. With some tweaks here and there, they could have created another unique and great map/scenery for the game and have something truly fresh to offer. The RE2 that we eventually got was great game nevertheless, but like you said, it doesn't feel threatening or creepy. While the mansion was ghoulish ghosthouse-style place with mad scientist puzzles, RE2 could have been on the industrian nightmare-style with blue and grey hue tones and overall darker atmosphere and focus on the sort of ''siege'' and zombie mass control to give that desperation.

RE2 is the golden reason why I hate DLC. I mean niggling story inconsistencies aside, here’s a triple aaa game which offered you four unique play throughs whose only cost was to beat the game. I am dreading the RE2 remake because you know, you just KNOW they’re gonna split it up into DLC. But then the best part is we all get to be called entitled whiners when we bring it up. This game felt massive in 98. 2 discs, A and B scenarios, new enemies and weapons on subsequent play throughs. Worth the 99 bucks the game was priced at. Amazing sequel and game. I think it may have been impossible to recapture the original games tense atmosphere, unraveling plot, and claustrophobic atmosphere of the mansion. Ammo was sparse making it a true survival game unlike Re2s over the top action elements that were fun, but subtracted from the survival in “survival horror”.

It's always refreshing seeing other people and their takes on one of my favorite games. After breaking the game down to the mechanics and optimizations, even going down to taking frame-data on the very first section of the game to try to manipulate the only part of the game that's truly randomized (In the Japanese version; chance for extra spawns in first room that slows down your movement slightly. Both versions; the gate after Kendo shop can break in one hit or several); it's easy to forgive and forget the minor niggles that can come up with the casual player. Example: You didn't like the linearity of the game, but it makes it a very convenient speed game, seeing how to free up an item slot, all you need to do is activate an extra door that is *always* on the way to where you are supposed to go. Also the abundance of ammo and healing items is just great for always having backup safe strats.

This was interesting, looking forward to the next part. I love the diagrams, it's really fun to see the flow of the game in that kind of form. I have a theory (backed up by a single, tenuous shred of evidence) that Capcom originally planned a different copy of the card suit keys for each character at the very least. I'd like to see that fixed in the remake, if it ever appears. Ultimately though, my main complaint with RE2 is that it squanders a lot of opportunities to do really interesting things, wasting a lot of potential. 1) Puzzle gameplay took a giant dive in quality and quantity from the first game. There are far fewer logic/number puzzles in the game (particularly in the final stretch, as you mention) and a lot of the fetch quest activity in the game borders on pointless, especially since the enemies are far less threatening overall than they were in RE1. 2) Nothing is really ever done with the mechanic of the two characters having their own events and choices impacting on each other. It's played about with when you close the shutters with the cable, and with the other two choices you mention, but nothing else really comes of it. This could have been really interesting but looks like a casualty of the development hell it went through, so In the end it's only really impactful in story terms, since it goes towards explaining how certain things happen throughout the course of the game. Consider the main fuse part in the lab as an example of all of this - the item you need first (fuse case) is in the same room as the first mechanism you need to take it to, then the final objective is two rooms away from that, with no danger along the way. What exactly was the point of that exercise? There's an argument that it's a pacing tool (it comes after a boss in scenario A so could serve as a breather) but you have a cutscene to buffer already, and a safe zone with lots of ammo that both serve that purpose handily. Scenario B is supposed to be more difficult and not give you that time and space to breathe - but it just recycles exactly the same activity as well. Maddening.

I actually love how non-linear this game becomes in its second half. It ESCALATES. I always say that RE2 is the most well-paced game I’ve ever played. It starts with an explosive action sequence, then gives you several hours of slower RE1 exploration and puzzle solving. After that, it becomes progressively more and more focused on action as the story escalates to its climax. RE2 is easily my favorite RE and that pacing is a large reason why. While you criticize 2’s linearity, I equally frown upon RE1/REMake’s obsession with finding 4 keys in order to find 3 keys in order to find 4 more keys in order to find 2 keys. It’s just overboard IMO and doesn’t lend itself to a smooth experience if you haven’t played it before. RE2, however, is smooth as butter

*"I equally frown upon RE1/REMake’s obsession with finding 4 keys in order to find 3 keys in order to find 4 more keys in order to find 2 keys"* Yeah, that's how an adventure game is supposed to be like... Straight up action linear route is not at all good enough especially in the pre RE4 combat which is clunky and not really something that can carry the game alone. RE2 doesn't feel like its confident to be its own thing, on one had it wants to be Spencer mansion 2.0 but at the same time it also wants to be like RE4. *"RE2, however, is smooth as butter"* Take those nostalgia goggles bro, getting those keys in the mansion is still a pain, especially when it makes you go ALL the way from the one end of the mansion to the other! I HAAAATED that in RE1 and RE2 repeating that is like pouring salt in my wound.. Thank GOD for REMAKE, it never makes you backtrack horribly like that.
@DonMiguelLaBestia7 жыл бұрын
*"Yeah, that's how an adventure game is supposed to be like..."* I wouldn't be an RE fan if I didn't understand that, I'm just saying it was too much for me in the REmake. For the record, I loathed RE4 the first time I played it and I still loathe it now. It's not a horror game. RE2 has more action, sure, but it's still thoroughly a horror game. *"Take those nostalgia goggles off"* I replayed the entire series two years ago and it was still my favorite. I revisit the REmake more often but that's largely because of the presentation and because I can play it on my modern console. That's why we all want the RE2 remake!
@விஷ்ணு_கார்த்திக்7 жыл бұрын
Wait.. you're talking about the REmake!? I thought you were complaining about the original RE1 not REmake! REmake is a 10/10 game, it's the best RE Horror game! no contest Collecting keys and backtracking in the original RE1&2 could get rather elongated and plodding but in REmake i don't have to run 100 kliometers back to open a door from the key i just found lol I have given up replaying Re2 for further unlockables because of this, on the other hand i can play RE3&Remake over and over until the end of time due to their refined&compact level design. Yes we need RE2 Remake but not for presentation alone... REmake is almost nothing like the original RE1's level design.

I keep forgetting that Resi 2 had basically four campaigns. I imagine that's why it took this long to get this particular vid out, eh? Either way, excellent analysis. It makes me wonder if the RE2 remake (if it ever happens) will expand on these alternate scenarios and maybe create even more unique situations.

Not really 4, but the same 2 campaigns slightly altered.

Very big into RE lately, so I'm glad to see this! How far into the series will you go? Will you only cover the numbered entries? Edit: rewatching episode 1, he says "every main entry," so it's gonna be the numbered ones (unless he wants to include Code Veronica)
@tabishkuma7 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see his Code Veronica analysis, because as far as I'm concerned, it's the hardest Resident Evil game in existence with some of the most frustrating boss fights.
@abstractdaddy13846 жыл бұрын
Code veronica was a main entry, no question. Doesn't matter that it didn't have a number at the end of the title.

I know that heaps of people have commented on it, and you remarked on it too, but yeah Claire A and Leon B is the true canon which is why it flows so much better -- Leon A and Claire B was debunked as canon years ago by Mikami, Kamiya, and the team, resulting in them needing to retcon Wesker's Report from 2000 because it followed the non-canon route. The early development of 1.5 as well had issues w/ Capcom themselves going by Famitsu interviews: they thought 1.5 played more like the first game and wanted to show off more power with the hardware, which is why you get a capped number of enemies in the engine in the final build. Mikami's writing on 1.5 also was made to be more final, an end to the entire story of Biohazard, but Capcom wanted to make a franchise and wanted more ties to the first game, which is how we got Claire instead of Elza and the open ending of the final game.

For the puzzlesthing you mentioned towards the end. The only reason they replicated them instead of having them be solved is that the devs would've had to make another puzzle to compensate for the one that was solved. Otherwise the B story would be very short.

I keep praying they come out with an RE2 remake like they did for the original. They keep talking about it, but details have been slim. Please make it happen.
