@@kabbablabba4073 a similar event happened to me as well, I went to Tomars va panel at magfest the one year and he personally offered me a picture with him, I was happy to oblige him and stood beside his shoulder, the next thing I knew he shoved me to the floor and swung his camera at my head, while I lay unconscious he took my boots off and clipped my toenails in front of everyone before placing them into a jar he kept inside his coat pocket. I woke to him leaving the panel by crawling up the ceiling on all fours. Basically I'm never taking my picture with him again even if he asks me to

Funny thing about Tom & Jerry; when I was growing up I absolutely loved T & J and I never once thought that the black lady is supposed to be a stereotype or someone's maid or whatever. I just naturally assumed she owns the house and Tom is her cat and that's it. I think overexplaining the character to small children doesn't really make sense.

Her visuals, the way she acts, and her name (mammy two shoes), reference American minstrel entertainment, which put on highly racist caricatures of black people, most often performed by white people in blackface. The mammy archetype was generally an older black woman with a motherly disposition, that was depicted as happy in her servile role. Also don't get it twisted that this was some niche thing in the south, it was the dominant form of popular American entertainment for like 200 years, people were doing it into the 60s, and before TV and the internet, it was the most common lense through which white people absorbed black culture. I get what you're saying about not understanding what about it is offensive, but I feel internalizing tropes that have some frighteningly racist roots is not great, and quite frankly, you and I aren't the ones that the racism was directed at, so we shouldn't really get to say whether it is or isn't offensive That said, I personally agree with Zach here that what they did was correct; don't sanitize it, but unambiguously state that it happened, it was in fact racist, and here's why we don't do that shit anymore
