To be fair, it does start of with a fairly generic "spooky southern house slasher" vibe, and it's definitely very different than the rest of the resident evil series. I think they went in cynical since it looked so different than anything that had come before in resident evil (which already had a downhill track record since 4) and companies have been bastardizing a lot of beloved ips lately. I say this as a huge fan of the game, it's easily my favorite modern gen horror game. I think it does a great job of subverting the stereotypes of the setting with interesting character ideas and tying in to the greater themes and narratives of the series as a whole, and I think the boys have come around to it over the years since they've spoken nicely about it in other series when they mention it.

maybe the mood was different, maybe they don't hold it to the classics standards. RE7 was herald as a return to the roots but its more like a chainsaw massacre copycat game than actual re. The mocap is ugly. RE4 is just as stupid but I think Chris let it pass cuz he love the gameplay. RE4 & RE7 are so far removed from classsic re that they can be their own franchises.
