The most embarrassing thing about all this is that when I played this as a 12 year old I thought this dialogue was soooooo cool. I had never played a capital M M-rated game before, and the game was so intense and effective with everything else it gave me the illusion that the dialogue was up there with them. As an adult I think the writing was intentional, and I really appreciate it for what is now.

It was easily one of the most horrifying things I'd experienced at the time, the chainsaw dude with the sack for a mask gave me nightmares for a good couple years when I played it. I have zero issue with RE4's dialogue, particularly Leon's. The game didn't take itself too seriously like RE5, and the comedy wasn't try hard and cliche like it was in RE6. It was so bad that it was _good,_ and it was so cheesy that gave RE4 tremedous charm that not a single game after it has replicated it since (and it may be because of Mikami himself, he's known to be pretty quirky). It gave the game some personality, where while it was pretty scary (in my opinion), you're gleefully wondering just what the heck will come out of Leon's mouth next. His interactions with Salazar had the most humor in the whole experience, and it was a pleasure. And Leon reminds me of DMC3 Dante (the best Dante). They're both very confidant (in Dante's case, he's way more playful), they're both badass, and they both have some very cheesy humor. In Leon's case, nobody says "Where's everyone going? Bingo?", but he takes it, owns it. That cheesiness is a part of his character, and makes him substantially less boring and dull (unlike Jake, who is too try hard, cocky, edgy, and dick-ish for that kind of humor to work with him). They've toned that part of him down a lot recently, bit it's still there, and should always be there, just like his iconic boy band hair.

God, I can't believe some miserable people out there actually dislike this dialogue. The fact that Leon's so painfully corny and spouts out so many B-movie lines is something to enjoy! Resident Evil's always been just as iconic for is hammy lines and B-movie charm as it is it's survival horror gameplay. Honestly, Leon and his corniness is one of the biggest reasons why Resident Evil 4's always gonna be one of my favorite games ever. If it didn't have it's plot, it'd have some great gameplay and solid atmosphere, but the cheesy yet charming narrative was what kept me captivated in RE4 the entire way through. This is easily my favorite incarnation of Leon, one I wish was still present in RE6 and any other RE games except 2, and his personality is what makes me watch every cutscene of 4 again every playthrough.

There is a difference between Resident Evil 1's acting and dialog vs Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 1 was not meant to be cheesy or at least as cheesy as it turned out to be. It was simply a product of its time. The actors sounded like they were just reading off of a script and didn't seem to have a clue what the hell was going on. With RE4, the script was deliberately written the way it was. While you can be invested in Resident Evil's story, even Shinji Mikami understood how ridiculous and over the top the games could get and they were just being somewhat self-aware. After Shinji Mikami left, it seemed like the people who took over the series didn't understand 4 very well which is why the series lost some of its charm. Resident Evil 5 had Albert Wesker more or less turn into a James Bond-esq super villain and we have muscleman Chris Redfield punching boulders, but they expected you to take everything seriously. Then in Resident Evil 6, Leon completely changed and had none of his witty dialogue from 4. One thing I do like is when playing Resident Evil 2 remake first and then going back to 4 because you get to see clear evolution of Leon's character. He starts out as a rookie cop who feels a little overwhelmed yet determined and isn't entirely confident in his own abilities yet. Resident Evil 4 shows us someone who has undergone training and has not only gained skills but is confident to the point where he can be comfortable in what should be extremely uncomfortable situations which is why he could be a total smartass in even the most serious situations.

I remember being 12 playing this game when it first came out and I thought the dialogue was badass. I'd beat it countless times and remembered pretty much everything, but it wasn't until I replayed it a decade later that I realized how goofy this game is. Still a10/10
