Something I love about the REmakes and modern titles is, despite the updates and improvements in things like voice acting, they understand that part of Resi’s charm has always been their campiness. They’ve successfully rebooted the series while retaining the personality that made RE stand out while not going full marvel movie or downplaying the scares. They don’t take themselves too seriously, but they’re not constantly winking at the camera or making the horror less impactful. Hell, they’ve improved upon the horror in so many respects. The scene of Sherry recognizing her dad as he mutates, for example, stands out in my mind. And yet, it’s still from a game that made me audibly laugh from its ridiculousness multiple times. This doesn’t even begin to cover the non-remakes- Resident Evil 7 is one of the scariest games I’ve played, and it still had me laughing my ass off. It’s kind of amazing, actually, and it’s no better illustrated than seeing the classic game cutscenes in the same video as the new ones. Despite the jump in quality, they’re still distinctly Resident Evil; Corny and creepy and all kinds of fun, just like a B-movie should be. I love this series so much. Long live RE!
