I will say, trying to kill Leon with some weak minions when he arrives would make some sense, it gives the impression that they don't want Ashley to be rescued. Leaving her out in the open to be picked up is more suspicious behaviour from a kidnapper than putting a few disposable goons in the way of the rescuer. After all, why was the VIP they kidnapped so lightly guarded and how did an untrained teenager escape so easily? They'd have all the more reason to place her under observation in a locked hospital room rather than letting her father see her again any time soon. That becomes irrelevant when you decide to do a super-villain monologue afterwards though.

I love the idea of the protagonist analyzing and pointing out all the holes and flaws in the villain's plans to the point where the villain is struggling to wrap their head around how their master plan is dumb or flawed. I know that's basically The Master in Fallout 1 (if you present him with the research report on the Super Mutants), but I just find that idea so funny.

Actually that's touched on in the 2006 guidebook with Leon's inner thoughts. It's hard to tell who's in control - a crazy cult leader with a control parasite or a meat puppet long overtaken by an old parasite using Saddler as a mouthpiece interpreter for its ambitions.

it’s still very cheesy it’s just hollywood movie cheesy instead of poorly translated anime cheesy, and imo it works much better in the remake. “I’ll give YOU a hole-y body” *stab* is a God-tier action movie one liner and the way that the remake creates dramatic tension around the question of change, and whether Leon must change to become darker or if he can change the world to be better, with the one liners as a symbol of his goofy boy scout optimism, doesn’t detract from the joy and fun at all but rather adds to it. The Remake allows for darker moments so the cheese and goofy fun can triumph over the darkness in the end, which is better.

I wouldn't say it lost the cheese. It is a darker tone, but the original RE4 was an extension of 2 in the same way that 4Remake was an extension of RE2make. In the remake, Leon still does a wildly unnecessary wall-kick backflip when chainsaws come through the wall. The bingo line is in there, the egg is still in the oven. It's still relatively goofy, just coming from RE2make as a starting point, which was a WILDLY darker game than the original.

Even if they removed the parasite from Ashley at least he'd successfully extract presumably millions of dollars of ransom first to expand his operation. Remember, Luis was a scientist who worked for Los Iluminados before turning rogue, so presumably there is or was a staff of scientists working for the organization. And all those rocket launchers and gatling guns they use on the Island aren't free.

It's worth noting there was originally a sub-plot where Ashley's parasite would enable her to control other Las Plagas, which is what the ritual that Salazar kept referring to was supposed to accomplish (and also why Ashley was then taken to the island lab). Presumably that was going to also factor into the overall plan for how she would help gain control of the U.S. Government.

The dumbest part in OG RE4 is Luis' death. First Leon enters the room. Then Luis enters the room through the same door. And then Saddler somehow appears and stabs Luis in the back with his tentacle. That means Saddler either entered the room through the same door or he just hung out under the ceiling and dropped down to ambush Luis. All while Ashley is the same room and doesn't make a single sound while Leon is mourning Luis.

Before anyone asks, yes, this is mostly addressed and fixed in the Remake... mostly EDIT: My reasoning explained for anyone who cares The main thing Luis & co were doing in that island lab was creating an genetically modified "superior" parasite that couldn't be detected and wouldn't impair the hosts brain functions while still being under Saddler's control. That is what Leon and Ashley are implanted with. The reason they are trying to delay/recapture Ashley is because they need the infection to reach completion before they can send her back. The cult never explains their plan to Leon. Luis is the one who informs them about the infection. Saddler can directly control the infected from any distance The infection can be spread not just through syringe but through spores in the air or through fluids, so covertly spreading it once Ashley was back in Washington would have been fairly easy. Saddler is unshakably confident because he is an actual insane fanatic and truly believes the Plaga hivemind is God. He's driven by faith. TL/DR: Yes I know, I'm very boring

Considering that Salazar made a big deal about capturing Ashley for some kind of ritual, I always thought the idea around keeping Leon from simply leaving with her was that there was more stuff that needed to be done before she was ready for being sent back home. The issue with that of course is that we never actually get to _see_ the ritual take place or learn what it was supposed to do. They do show it in the remake, apparently strengthening the parasite inside her, but why exactly it was needed is still not quite clear. Either way, Saddler telling Leon and Ashley his entire plan _in their very first meeting_ was always super dumb. Reminds me of Dr. Doofenschmirtz, who is always giddy about telling his arch-nemesis Perry his plan of the day like he just can't help himself. It's one of the things I'm glad was changed in the remake, as it is now Luis who tells them that Ashley's infected since he has both knowledge of how the parasite works and reason to share that information.

Suspension of Disbelief is a powerful tool when used well and appropriately. Some games use this as part of the story to have fun, but I’ve seen it more often used to cover up plot holes and poor writing. You’re not going to get me to suspend my disbelief for the new Saints Row game when the story and dialogue are just bad. Suspension of Disbelief only works as an enhancement of an already enjoyable story, not a bandaid for shitty writing.

Just an anotation, Madrid probably wouldn't be the closest city with an airport. By architecture and climate chances are that RE4 happens in the north of Spain, probably somewhere around the Pyrenees like Navarre, Euskadi or Aragón. As someone who has played an ungodly amount of RE4 Classic and RE4 Remake, I never once thought about the plot hole that Yahtzee presented right now. If Saddler wanted to have sleeper agents in the White House, why WAS he so hellbent on killing us and stopping us from rescuing Ashley???

And its not like its unfixable Just have the first villiager be the one to inject leon thus avoiding the why did you capture me only to kill me (one of the things better handled in the remake) You would think With all of the files they have in the game they could have written one that goes into more details of the plan, like maybe ashley can make tiny plaga eggs she puts in her fathers food or Something maybe hers is a special designed plaga that can turn invicible Like the insects in the sewers so it wont be found in a medical examination

I remember talking to a friend about how RE4 has bad writing. He was defending with the usual "well it's just a little bit campy" excuse. I said "the game begins with the president sending... one... person to rescue his kidnapped daughter". He hasn't responded me since. It's been 15 years...

Saddler’s plan was dumb. Resident Evil 4 was still a fun game. Haven’t played the remake though. Especially after Yahtzee’s review and his critique of the breakable knife

While RE4's story is stupid, I'm at the point where I _much_ prefer fun campiness in video games over hours of self-serious exposition dumps. It's a feature of Resident Evil, not a bug.

I've always known it was dumb, but it doesn't matter. The game really is 'Army of Darkness' in playable form. It's dumb, but it *knows* it's dumb. And for that, I love it.

You know what would be more interesting and realistic? If after the kidnapping the entire 101st, the Deltas and the Seals rolled up instead of just one lone guy... ... and then *they* started getting picked off by madness-inducing horrors.

Lots of stuff doesn't make sense. RPG warriors- "You're gonna save the world, right? Well you still gotta buy this sword from me. Oh, wait, you're gonna give me 10 other sword you found for cash to buy it? Okay, I'll store them in my inventory for the hundreds of other people that aren't here saving our little town..."

Yeah, maybe with the next remake of the game they'll pull a FF7 rebirth where most of the beginning is the same, but have it change half way through. Leon comes in guns blazing, rescue Ashley, fights what seams like a big boss and speeds away, then rug pull, their unknowingly infected and helps the bad guys get to Amarica and Leon has to really fix it when someone else cures him. Could even have a big boss fight on some landmarks.

I hadnt played 4 before the remake but when I found out that this was the plot I too was screaming "WHY WONT YOU LET ME LEAVE!? YOUR WHOLE PLAN HINGES ON ME LEAVING!"

This reminded me of the Kevin the Intern bits from Dorkly, where he works for evil, usually video game, villains and points out all the flaws in their plans and then fixes them so that the protagonist stands no chance. Like using the coin s in Bowser's castle to hire private security assets to take out "Red One" and "Green Two" when they get to the castle. Or sitting Thanos down and explaining how snapping away half the universes population with destroy the supply chains on every planet, making things even more unbalanced than just leaving things alone. And as I really enjoyed those bits, I similarly really enjoyed this one. Good show. Keep up the good work.

Even before watching, I'll just say that I'm already convinced that the Resident Evil plot is stupid in its entirety. I'm only watching this because I expect you to reinforce that opinion in an entertaining way. In fact, I kinda doubt that there were many people out there who believed that RE4 (or any of them, really) is not stupid. Edit: well, that was even stupider than I imagined.
